About 2014 GMC Acadia

4.0

Overall Rating

Ever dreamed of buying an ambidextrous SUV, but fell short of budget? Well, owning one is no more a fantasy, thanks to the 2014 GMC Acadia. Yes, we know that theSUV has been around for years, then what is so different about it this time?

The GMC Acadia gets only minor features and configuration changes for the model year 2014. The top-shelf Acadia Denali now comes standard with forward collision warning and lane departure warning, while the same has been made available on SLT-1 and SLT-2 trims. Inside the cabin of the Acadia, two USB ports for charging have been added for the second row.

Speaking of the fiscal value, the 2014 GMC Acadia will allow you to place dibs starting from $34,175 for the SLE-1 trim. Apparently, not much to differentiate it from yesteryear, but some extraordinary driver assistance tech along with some subtle changes to the interior to improve practicality make owning this budget-friendly yet ambidextrous midsize SUV a lot more worth it.

The SLT trims provide a nice balance between features and price and should satisfy most buyers. The SLT-1 trim comes equipped with features like 19-inch wheels as standard, tri-zone climate control leather interior, an eight-way power-adjustable passenger seat along with a ten-speaker Bose surround sound audio system with prices ranging between $41,000 to $44,000, which for what you get with the SLT-1 is a great deal.

2014 GMC Acadia Review

Pros

  • First-rate cabin materials
  • Generous cargo capacity
  • Above-average safety and reliability scores

Cons

  • Maneuvering through traffic can be daunting

Ever dreamed of buying an ambidextrous SUV, but fell short of budget? Well, owning one is no more a fantasy, thanks to the 2014 GMC Acadia. Yes, we know that theSUV has been around for years, then what is so different about it this time?

Overview

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The Acadia is one of the most versatile SUVs in the United States market. Owing to the growing response to large-sized vehicles, Acadia’s lineup was updated to suit the best of everyone’s needs. Likewise, for 2014, the SUV has a total of five trims to be selected from, viz. - SLE-1, SLE-2, SLT-1, SLT-2 and Denali.

Obviously, the Denali is the most leisure-oriented trim, while with each subsequent trim you look down upon, the list of features keeps abbreviating. All trims are available with all-wheel drive (front-wheel drive is standard), but higher trims have available features lower trims don't. The SLT trims provide a nice balance between features and price and should satisfy most buyers.

Buying Advice

The Denali trim of the GMC Acadia is what you'd want. For the year 2014, the Acadia Denali adds standard forward collision warning and lane departure warning functions. So the already opulent model is now a lot safer too.

Engine and Performance
7.4/10

"All Acadia models are powered by a 288-hp 3.6-liter V-6 with 270 lb-ft of torque mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and is available in front- or all-wheel drive." -MotorTrend.Com

Under the hood of the Acadia is a 3.6L V6 engine, which is standard on all its trims. The engine churns out a respectable 288 horsepower along with 270 lb-ft of torque through a six-speed shiftable automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard in the Acadia, and all-wheel drive is available across the board.

The ride is cushioned over most road surfaces. Well-weighted steering aids the composed handling on curvy roads, and strong brakes provide good stopping power. However, the Acadia can be difficult to maneuver in tight quarters. In comparison to its rivals, this GMC is the most powerful of the lot.

In terms of acceleration, the Acadia takes 7.8 seconds to reach 60 mph from a standing start in favorable conditions and with a four-wheel drive. On the other hand, the Nissan Pathfinder records a faster acceleration time than all the vehicles under consideration above, of 7.1 seconds. But with 5200 lbs of max towing capacity, only the Traverse and Acadia truly justify being a mid-size three-row SUV.

Fuel Economy
9.0/10

The Acadia has continued to mesmerize owners for seven straight years, but not even a single time has GMC revamped the SUV’s powertrain. A lot of its attributes include fairly impressive fuel consumption too. With the FWD setup, the 2014 Acadia will return a combined 19 mpg as per the EPA. When paired with the AWD unit, that goes down by just 1 mpg.

Now, it is not as fuel-efficient as the two Japs, Nissan Pathfinder and Toyota Highlander returning 22 and 21 mpg combined, but it is definitely more economical. The Chevy Traverse follows the same ideology.

Interior
7.7/10

"The 2014 GMC Acadia features an attractive interior, as most of the surfaces you're likely to touch or lean an elbow on are padded and of solid quality." -Edmunds.Com

Quality soft-touch materials create a welcoming environment for up to eight passengers. The GMC Acadia has an upscale interior that uses top-notch cabin materials. It features three rows of seats, whereas some SUVs in the class only have two. The base 2014 Acadia seats eight, but higher trims feature second-row captain's chairs instead of a bench, meaning they only seat seven.

The third row of seats is best left for children, but that's not uncommon. The first two rows have plenty of space. Front row occupants will enjoy abundant head- and legroom, as will second-row occupants, but the middle row seat cushions are mounted low, reducing comfort for adults. Sliding those seats all the way back alleviates this issue, but effectively kills third-row legroom. The slide release feature is also difficult to access.

The third row is great for kids and smaller adults, other than that, the cabin space is commendable. An unexpected benefit is the Acadia’s surprisingly spacious cargo area. Even with the 3rd-row seat in place, it really will hold eight people and a good percentage of their gear with over 24 cu-ft on offer. That expands to a  total of 116.1 cubic feet with both the second and third-row seats folded.

Some other standout interior features of the 2014 GMC Acadia include-

  • Audio And Cruise Controls On Steering Wheel
  • Three Zone Climate Control
  • Speed-Proportional Power Steering
  • Rear View Camera
  • 12V Rear And 12V Cargo Area Power Outlet(S)
  • Interior Air Filtration
  • Leather And Simulated Alloy Trim On Center Console

Standard features in the Acadia include a six-speaker audio system, satellite radio, a USB port, and Bluetooth. The vehicle's notable available features include a 10-speaker Bose audio system, a rear-seat entertainment system, navigation, a dual-panel sunroof, and GMC's IntelliLink infotainment system. It provides smartphone radio app integration and features a clean layout and intuitive menu structure. That's an impressive array of technology, but you may not love it all. The IntelliLink system in particular draws criticism because it can be unresponsive and slow.

Some interesting features of GMC’s infotainment unit consist of-

  • Bose Premium Brand Speakers
  • 3 Months Of Provided Satellite Radio Service
  • Element Antenna
  • 10 Total Speakers
  • Auxiliary Audio Input And USB With External Media Control

Exterior
9.0/10

"Not too formal, but crisper-looking than the Chevy Traverse and Buick Enclave it calls kin, the GMC Acadia wears a nicely fitted sport coat of sheetmetal, and a tidy, well-turned-out cockpit." -TheCarConnection

As compared to its corporate cousins - the Traverse and the Enclave -, the 2014 GMC Acadia looks tougher and muscular with its flared fenders and pronounced front grille, which in the Denali is even more of a head-grabber as it gets a chrome mesh grille instead of the normal one. You won’t find any tacked-on body cladding or garish add-ons.

Even the Acadia Denali, with its big chrome mesh grille and larger-diameter wheels, resists the temptation to go overboard. Riding on standard 18-inch wheels, the Acadia has a purposeful, wide stance, while chrome and LED lighting add noticeable yet tasteful elegance. A subtle rear spoiler helps reduce aerodynamic drag and looks sharp, while the chrome exhaust tips and roof-rail accents help the Acadia shine.

The Acadia offers an agreeable middle ground, along with ruggedly handsome styling that reflects the brand's truck heritage. Choosing one of the three will likely come down to your styling preference, pricing, and your experience at the dealership. From the outside, the Acadia follows a more traditional SUV-like design language than some of its competitors like the Pathfinder or the Highlander.

Competition
6.0/10

2014 GMC Acadia vs 2014 Toyota Highlander

The Toyota Highlander just doesn't stand a chance against the Acadia. The GMC Acadia is cheaper, more powerful, and less expensive than the Highlander. It also has a significantly larger cargo hold. The only advantage the Highlander serves is of being more fuel-efficient and having more spacious first and second rows. But the Acadia has a bigger gas tank returning more range, and the third row is more accommodating as well.

2014 GMC Acadia vs 2014 Nissan Pathfinder

The Nissan Pathfinder has a lot of accolades to its name. It less expensive to own, has relatively better acceleration, and is also a lot more fuel-efficient. But it loses to the Acadia in respect to the fact that the Acadia is more purposeful as a midsize, three-row SUV. It can tow more, offers more range, and the cargo hold is simply outstanding.

Final Verdict

The GMC Acadia is long due for a generation change, but still, it does not show any major weakness against its competitors. It offers great comfort, quiet and smooth ride quality, along with rugged looks and a poised stance, which its rivals like the Nissan Pathfinder are shying away from. However, because of the outdated infotainment system, Acadia surely is falling behind. Still, if a big, rugged, and powerful SUV is your demand, the 2014 GMC Acadia does do justice to your demands.
