Overall Rating
The new Hyundai Veloster homes the same DNA, but the overall look has been iterated to suit the more modern era of automobiles. Sadly, despite having plenty of standard features and a spry turbo-four engine, the 2014 Hyundai Veloster ranks low in its class.
Hatchbacks have been seen getting a lowering response from the populace thanks to the prolific options in the recently developed crossover market. The Veloster is a comparatively new product, with its first version dating back to just 2011.
In fact, the new Hyundai Veloster homes the same DNA, but the overall look has been iterated to suit the more modern era of automobiles. Rivals best its weak base engine, limited rear-seat headroom, mixed safety scores, and poor reliability rating.
As there are a lot of customization options available, we would like to suggest the R-Spec option that will not only adorn many of the athletic amenities but will also boast a more powerful engine at a marginal increase in price. Besides, this Hyundai comes with a manual transmission, which is like heaven for enthusiasts.

The 2014 Hyundai Veloster is available in three trim levels: base, Turbo R-Spec, and Turbo. The R-Spec is new for 2014 and is supposed to bridge the gap between the two previous versions. The Base Veloster comes with a lot of standard equipment including 17-inch alloy wheels, LED DRLs, air-conditioning, and even cruise control and heated mirrors.
What’s standard now is the rear view camera. Meanwhile, it adorns some convincing infotainment features as well, like the 7” touchscreen interface and a 6-Speaker audio system. Feature-wise, the Turbo, and R-Spec trims are quite similar with a difference in the suspension tuning and a RE: FLEX Edition apparatus that is only limited to the new R-Spec version.

Under the hood of this rare hatchback is a 138 HP four-cylinder engine. If you are reading about it for the first time, then don’t go by the figures. In fact, this naturally aspirated motor has a major share that caused the collapse of this hatchback.
More precisely, acceleration in the Veloster is sluggish with the standard 138-horsepower four-cylinder engine. The sprightlier Hyundai Veloster Turbo comes with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 201 horsepower. However, its turbocharger gives it a bit of lag, making the car slower than some competitors off the line.

A six-speed manual transmission is standard, but models with a six-speed automatic transmission are preferred more by us Americans. Turns out that the Veloster Hatchback’s naturally aspirated powertrain is a long way from beating any of its competitors. The Scion TC beats the lot with a powerful engine, but then there is a Honda, as always, that steals victory by finishing the quarter-mile before it despite a smaller and less powerful engine.
As a Hyundai, the Veloster has to meet a lot of expectations, and a good fuel economy is one of them. The Veloster returns 24-27 mpg in the city and 31-35 mpg on the highway, which is an above-average fuel economy for the class. These figures are again limited to the naturally aspirated motor. Meanwhile, one could expect only a minor deviation in these figures from the turbo petrol engine.

Comparatively, the Veloster is substantially ahead of its competition in terms of fuel economy. The Fiat 500 is the only other vehicle that shares the same fuel consumption rate as the Hyundai Veloster. Meanwhile, the Scion TC and Volkswagen Beetle are the heavy eaters and despite an extra gallon they can fit in the tank, it is the Veloster that can travel further with a full tank.
The Veloster is quite a spacious upfront for two, even with the available sunroof or panoramic roof. Tall drivers and passengers will fit just fine in the Veloster, even those over six feet tall, because its seats adjust for a wide range of heights (though the base seat doesn't tilt its bottom cushion) and since there's ample headroom.
As for the back seat and that catchy side door, they're more playful than practical. Anyone greater than child-size is going to find it right back there. The Veloster just isn't meant to be a four-person commuter.Â

The deep trunk holds 15.5 cubic feet under that hatch. With the seats folded down, the maximum cargo capacity is 34.7 cubes. That's respectable if you're comparing the Veloster to two-door coupes, but most compact hatchbacks have certain additional feet of space. Although, we can be wrong sometimes since the figures suggest otherwise. Interior features in the 2014 Hyundai Veloster are:
Despite the Veloster’s hard plastic dash surfaces, the cabin is attractive and well-equipped. Standard features include keyless entry and an easy-to-use touch-screen infotainment system with a 7-inch display, a six-speaker audio system, satellite radio, USB input, and Bluetooth. The Veloster is available with a navigation system, a proximity key, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic sunroof, and an impressive eight-speaker audio system.
With a door at the rear, two on the passenger side, and one on the driver's side, the 2014 Hyundai Veloster has a layout that's anything but conventional. The Hyundai Veloster is a genre-buster by design. It dares to be a lot of things all at once. A sporty coupe, a versatile five-door, and a stylish oddity among small cars—it's really all of those, at once.
The basic Veloster needs very little applique to change itself into Turbo drag--just some piano-black grille gloss, some side kit, some LED trim front and back. Sportier interior trim and special badging are part of the new model's presentation, and it's offered only in Marathon Blue, Sprint Gray (exclusive to the R-Spec), Elite White, and Ultra Black.

Since the two doors on its passenger side aren't matched by the single, longer one on the driver side, the Veloster is more than a coupe—a three-door or four-door hatchback, depending on the definition. In any case, it adds up to acres of personality.
The optional Style package adds a panoramic sunroof, chrome, and piano-black exterior trim, while the Technology package adds 18-inch alloy wheels with body-matching painted inserts, rear parking sensors, automatic headlights, etc. Some of the exterior features in the 2014 Hyundai Veloster are:
From the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the new Hyundai Veloster earned the highest score of Good in three crash tests, an Acceptable in the side impact test, and a Marginal in the small overlap front test.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the Veloster five out of five stars overall. Unlike several other compact cars, the Hyundai Veloster comes standard with a rearview camera and a crash notification system. Rear parking sensors and automatic headlights are available in upper trims.
The Hyundai Veloster is quite a strong player of the hatchback team when it comes to style and comfort. However, performing is crucial in any game, and that is where the problems begin for the Veloster. Its sluggish powertrain is the main reason the hatchback has not been able to perform distinctively in the American market. Nevertheless, hoping that the Turbocharged spec does well this time, we suggest you take a deep dive into the Veloster before you judge it any further.
