For 2014, Infiniti has decided to rename their outgoing G37 sedan to Q50. The Q50 is an Infiniti sports sedan but the G37 wasn’t. It may have the same wheelbase, same engine, and same dimensions as the G37, but the Q50 has a sporty character. The Q50 is the first step in Infiniti’s plan to rename all their vehicles.

But the only question that will remain is, will consumers respond?
Go for the Premium trim if you want the true luxury flavor of Infiniti. The asking price for the Premium trim starts at $40,000, and it adds all the optional features of the base trim as standard. The Sport trim is for those who want to experience a sporty ride with paddle shifters, sport suspension, performance tires, etc.

Powering the Infiniti Q50 is Nissan’s well-regarded VQ series 3.7-liter naturally aspirated V6 engine that makes 328 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. The only transmission available is a 7-speed automatic transmission and can be had with a rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive systems. Even with a new name, the Q50 retains much of the G37’s essence, thanks to some well-managed suspension movements, ride quality, and cornering ability that still co-exist.
Those sharp bumps and road noise are noticeable at times. In turns, the Q50 isn’t the most engaging but certainly capable, and it does offer some interesting technology. Infiniti’s direct adaptive steering system forgoes the connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels and relies on the electronic signals alone to steer the vehicle. With customizable steering ratios and steering efforts, the system is better than the video game experience you might imagine. If the electronics ever fail, the system automatically activates a mechanical backup.

Obviously, the powerful Q50 steals the first spot on the table, and it is followed by the Lexus IS 350. The Lincoln MKS and the Buick LaCrosse go head-to-head for third place, but it's the MKS that wins. Also, only the Q50 comes with a 7-speed automatic, while the other three rivals come with a six-speed automatic.
The Infiniti Q50’s fuel efficiency is pretty average. The 3.6-liter V6 is quite powerful and returns 20 mpg in the cities and 29 mpg on the highways. A combined mileage of 23 mpg is offered in a rear-wheel-drive setup. By opting for the all-wheel-drive system, the combined figure falls down to 22 mpg.

The Lexus IS 350 surprises everyone with the best fuel estimates. The Lincoln MKS gets the praises for its good fuel efficiency and a combined range of 446 miles despite housing a small tank. While the Q50 has the best fuel economy, the Buick LaCrosse’s fuel numbers are quite low compared to its rivals.
The Infiniti Q50’s well-appointed dual-cockpit layout presents a sporting and sophisticated image. Further enhancing the cabin are some of the finest materials available in the segment, including a soft-touch lower dash. The Q50 features Infiniti’s intuition, which means all customizable settings for both driver and vehicle are saved by the key. Switch keys, and the settings change automatically.
Infiniti has also shrunk down the A-pillars and B-pillars in this vehicle compared to the outgoing G37. This allows passengers an easy entry and exit to this vehicle. In the back, the Q50 easily accommodates two adults, whereas comfort is merely adequate. When it comes to passenger space, the Q50 holds its own boasting a decent 13.5 cubic feet trunk capacity, competitive headroom figures, and more total legroom than most of its competitors.

With 40.2 inches of headroom, six-footers can easily accommodate themselves comfortably. The rear legroom in the Lexus IS 350 is really low for adults. In terms of practicality, the Lincoln MKS offers a class-leading trunk volume of 19.2 cubic feet, while the other rivals stay in the same league. The interior features of the Q50 include:
The cabin centerpiece is a standard dual touchscreen interface that’s used to control most vehicle’s functions. Technophobes might object to the lack of real buttons. The interface’s responsiveness and smart layout make it surprisingly easy to use for all skill levels, especially compared to the complex infotainment systems offered by Audi and BMW.
Thankfully, most of the hard buttons remain in the console, and if you prefer it over the touchscreen, it’s easy to navigate. The sound system in this car is fantastic. Bose has installed 10 speakers, which include a subwoofer in each of the front doors and one in the back. Some of the other features include:
The exterior of the Infiniti Q50 is defined by taut muscular bodywork. Borrowing heavily from the Infiniti Essence concept, the Q50 has what Infiniti calls a double-arch front grille as well as LED headlights and LED daytime running lights.
The new shape is incredibly aerodynamic with a coefficient of drag of just 0.26 and zero lift front and rear. More importantly though, the new Q50 looks stunning.

Despite its huge size and weight, the Lincoln MKS performs better than the LaCrosse. It leads the table in almost all the sections. The Lexus IS 350 has the shortest wheelbase of 110.2 inches, which means less passenger room. When it comes to curb weight, Lincoln MKS is the heaviest of the lot, while the Infiniti stands as the lightest at 3,574 lbs. The exterior of the stylish Q50 are:
In terms of safety, the 2014 Infiniti Q50 earned respectable ratings. A five-star rating was given to the sedan by NHTSA, while IIHS gave ‘Good’ ratings in four crash tests. In the front overlap crash test, it received an ‘Acceptable’ rating.
Not to forget, it also earned a ‘Top Safety Pick’ designation from the agency. Only a rearview camera is available as a standard feature, while the other top advanced safety systems are available as optional features. These include:
In the compact luxury car segment, emotion matters. If you find yourself drawn to the technology, seductive lines, and beautiful interior of the Infiniti Q50, then by all means take one for a spin. Just know, there are a lot of nice cars that deserve your attention, especially the BMW 3 Series for a low base price, Lexus IS for a super-soft ride, or a Cadillac ATS for exceptionally engaging handling that sit among the top priorities.
