Nowadays the compact sedans represent a lot more than cheap and basic modes of transportation for low-budget buyers, and now offer a more premium experience for city dwellers, where the parking facilities are limited.
Nowadays the compact sedans represent a lot more than cheap and basic modes of transportation for low-budget buyers, and now offer a more premium experience for city dwellers, where the parking facilities are limited. The Kia Rio is one of the strongest contenders in this segment as it offers plenty of features, a stylish cabin, a solid performance, and great value for money with extensive warranty coverage.
The base LX trim should suffice most needs of the buyers as it gets most of the creature comforts that one might need on a daily basis, and considering the fact that it’s a compact car for the budget-minded, the prices stay well in check as well as it is available with a price of just $14,700.

The 2014 Kia Rio is offered in three trim options along with two transmission choices. The base LX trim gets only the manual gearbox, while the other trims feature only the automatic transmission. Staying true to Kia’s philosophy, the Rio comes packed with features right from the base trim, and going up the trims adds more functionality and premiumness to the car.

The Kia Rio is powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that produces a healthy output of 138 hp and 123 lb-ft of torque, all of which is sent to the front wheels only as standard.
The transmission duties are taken up by a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission, and there is no AWD option available even as an option. The performance from this powertrain is pretty solid as it gets to 60 mph in around 8 seconds.

The Hyundai Accent is basically a corporate twin to the Kia Rio and hence both of them share their powertrain and other mechanicals with each other. The Ford Fiesta is similarly priced as the Rio but features an underpowered engine and hence has a very sluggish acceleration performance.
One of the major advantages of owning a compact sedan is the low running costs which helps the owner save money in the long run, and the Kia Rio is a pretty frugal car as well. The EPA rates the 2014 Rio for a whopping 27 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highways. The combined 31 mpg of fuel economy together with an 11.4-gallon fuel tank provides around 400 miles of highway cruising range.

There is hardly anything to differentiate between the three compact cars in terms of fuel efficiency as all the three cars have very similar ratings. The Fiesta employs a marginally larger gas tank, which aids it in providing a longer driving range as compared to the Korean twins.
The cabin of Rio showcases a modern and more European style, and although the material quality is nothing worth mentioning in the base trim, the higher trims get additional cushioning and tasteful metallic accents that add more appeal to the car.
There is tons of space upfront inside the cabin, but the rear seat is a bit tight as no adult would prefer to travel there for an extended period of time.Â

The Kia Rio and the Hyundai Accent have similarly sized trunk capacity, but the Hyundai Accent offers a more balanced front and rear-seat legroom, which makes the rear seat more usable than the Rio. The Fiesta, on the other hand, has a compact rear seat and the cargo capacity also is marginally smaller than the other two. Major interior features include-
The dashboard of the Kia Rio is well laid out, and the UVO infotainment system is pretty slick to use and offers a very intuitive experience, which is one of the best in the segment. The voice recognition is as good as the one found in the Ford cars, and opting for navigation fleets the UVO commands and features its own set of voice commands. Major infotainment features include-
The Kia Rio does not look like a mundane compact sedan, and in fact, looks a lot premium with the large headlights, front grille with chrome inserts, and the simple yet stylish wheels that accentuate the overall look of the car.
The front bumper design could have been done in a better way, but overall, it is a very handsome-looking car. The sedan weighs 2,410 lbs and stands 5.5 inches above the ground.

The Kia Rio is the most compact of the cars on this list and yet has a much longer wheelbase to offer. It also weighs the least, which helps it in achieving superior fuel economy figures. Despite being longer in length, the Ford Fiesta has a shorter wheelbase and is heavier as well. The ground clearance of Ford is the best though as both the Korean cars are marginally lower to the ground. Major exterior highlights of the sedan are-
Opting for an affordable compact sedan need not translate to a compromise on the safety front, and the Kia Rio proves that. The 2014 Rio is rated with an overall 4-star rating out of the possible 5-stars by the NHTSA, while it did perform decently in the crash tests conducted by the IIHS. The list of safety features and driver assistance features is not the greatest, but it is on par with the segment, and a highlight of it is listed below.
The 2014 Kia Rio offers a high value for money for first-time buyers as not only does it cost less to run, it is pretty practical in terms of cabin space, has plenty of standard features, has a strong performance, and has an appealing styling to package it right. The extensive warranty coverage that Kia offers is an added bonus and hence it is top of the priority list for many buyers when looking for a car in this segment.
