About 2014 Land Rover Range Rover

4.0

Overall Rating

The Land Rover Range Rover is an SUV that defines the meaning of luxury for many.

The Land Rover Range Rover is an SUV that defines the meaning of luxury for many. It has got a lush interior that can fight against a five-star hotel’s suit, it is blessed with an elegant exterior design language that makes one hypnotize, and it is filled with numerous standard features which generally are options on many other luxury SUVs. That being said, the Range Rover, despite many good points, is far from perfect since it has an average reliability rating from the J.D. Power.

We think that HSE trim will be the best fit for you. Not only it has balanced and upgraded features but also some optional packages which are not given on the base trim. Yes, it misses out on the V8 engine but the new 3-liter Supercharged V6 engine with stop/start is still a capable engine.

  • High body roll

The Land Rover Range Rover is an SUV that defines the meaning of luxury for many.

Overview

The Land Rover Range Rover is an SUV that defines the meaning of luxury for many. It has got a lush interior that can fight against a five-star hotel’s suit, it is blessed with an elegant exterior design language that makes one hypnotize, and it is filled with numerous standard features which generally are options on many other luxury SUVs. That being said, the Range Rover, despite many good points, is far from perfect since it has an average reliability rating from the J.D. Power.

Pricing and Features
9.9/10

The new Land Rover Range Rover is offered in four different trim levels where the base Range Rover trims adds a heated steering wheel, cruise control, 8.0-inch touchscreen with navigation, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and leather heated front seats. Go up in the trim ladder and HSE trim will feature a bigger set of wheels, heated rear seats, 12-way power front seats, and a sliding panoramic sunroof. The Supercharged trim provides a bigger and more punchy V8 engine, front fog lights, and upgraded off-roading types of equipment. At the same time, the top-tier Autobiography adds all the premium features on the line-up and additional safety features such as adaptive cruise control with queue assist and intelligent emergency braking, reverse traffic detection, and a surround-view camera system.

It also gets a front center console cooler compartment. That said, the Front Climate Comfort Pack on the HSE and Supercharged trim adds front climate seats, front massage seats and adjustable seat bolster, passenger memory settings, and the front center console cooler compartment. The Four-zone Climate Comfort Pack has the contents of the previous package and four-zone climate control, rear climate seats, passenger seat away, solar attenuating glass and privacy glass, and four-way rear seat power lumbar. That said, an active rear locking differential is standard on the Autobiography but an option on the Supercharged trim.

We Recommend

We think that HSE trim will be the best fit for you. Not only it has balanced and upgraded features but also some optional packages which are not given on the base trim. Yes, it misses out on the V8 engine but the new 3-liter Supercharged V6 engine with stop/start is still a capable engine.

Engine and Performance
8.4/10

For 2014, Land Rover has replaced the naturally aspirated 5-liter V8 engine with the supercharged 3-liter V6 engine. It is offered on the base Range Rover and HSE and it is married to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The new V6 engine churns out 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. A four-wheel-drive system is standard on all trims. That said, the base engine helps the Range Rover in reaching the 60-mph from the state of rest in 7.1 seconds while the V8 can cut out about half a second.

If you climb the trim ladder, the upper two trims will come with the supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine which is married to an 8-speed automatic transmission as well and puts out 510 horsepower and 461 lb-ft of torque. Both engines have the stop and start feature. If we talk about the driving dynamics, the Range Rover lags behind the German counterparts. Also, the long-wheelbase Range Rovers are more comfortable than the standard wheelbase versions.

On one hand, the Cayenne has the leading horsepower while on the other hand the LX 570 has the highest torque. The most agile SUV in the competition is from the Porsche while the slowest one is from the Lexus. Furthermore, despite having the least engine output, the X5 does the job decently and reaches 60 mph from a standstill in 5.9 seconds.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

As per the EPA data, the 2014 Land Rover Range Rover with the base engine offers a fuel economy of 17/23/19 MPG in the city, on the highway, and combined respectively. If a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 is present under the hood then the figures will reduce by 3, 4, and 4 MPG for the city, highway, and combined respectively. Additionally, with both engines, a 27.7-gallon fuel tank is given.

Furthermore, the BMW X5 has the smallest fuel tank in the competition whereas the Range Rover has the biggest one.

Interior
7.7/10

The Land Rover Range Rover has a cabin that is comparable to a luxury hotel’s best suit. The quality of the material has not been compromised and to make the cabin even more delightful various standard and optional wood trims are on offer. The base trim gets grained leather upholstery which can be upgraded to oxford leather upholstery on the HSE and Supercharged trims and to Semi-Aniline leather one on the top-ranking trim. The leather-wrapped heated steering wheel is standard with optional wood trim on it. The Alston headlining is present in the Autobiography while the rest of the trims need to settle with the Morzine headlining.

The front seats get an 8-way power adjustment which can be upgraded to an 18-way power adjustment on the topmost trim. Heated front seats, auto-dimming interior mirror, power tilt and telescopic steering wheel, tri-zone automatic climate control, five 12V outlets, HomeLink garage door opener, keyless entry, interior mood lighting are some standard amenities on the base Range Rover while the soft door close is an optional feature. Select the higher trim and you will be able to enjoy a ventilation feature under the climate seats and a better temperature control system.

Exterior
9.0/10

The Range Rover received a full-redesign last year, so there are no significant changes on the exterior. It still has that clean and bulky look along with the fine cuts all over the exterior. At the front, an aggressive silver grille is present which is making a bold statement along with auto-leveling xenon headlights. Also, the Autobiography adds LED signature lighting with the headlights. Move the attention to the side profile and you can’t help but notice the elegant vertical cuts at the end of the front door and a long silver trim meeting with the rear wheel fenders.

On the rear end, quad-exhaust tips and LED taillights are providing a sporty appeal to the Range Rover. Daytime running lights, privacy glass, heated off-screen wiper park position, heated laminated acoustic front windshield, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and heated power side mirrors with memory settings are standard. At the same time, other than the base trim, others do get a sliding panoramic sunroof. By default, the entry-level Range Rover runs on the 19-inch five split-spoke wheels which can be replaced with the optional 20-inch wheels with Shadow Chrome finish.

Standard 20 inch five split-spoke wheels can either be replaced with the base Ranger Rover’s wheels with no cost or with the optional 22-inch wheels. Furthermore, standard 21-inch ten-spoke wheels on the Supercharged trim are always ready to get traded off with the optional 22-inch five split-spoke wheels same as the HSE trim. Finally, diamond-turned finish 21-inch ten-spoke wheels on the Autobiography can be replaced with either 22-inch seven split-spoke wheels with the same finish or 22-inch seven-spoke wheels.

The mammoth of the segment is the Lexus LX 570. It is the heaviest, tallest, and also has the leading length. On a side note, the Porsche Cayenne is the smallest one in terms of exterior dimensions. At the same time, the BMW X5 has the largest wheelbase which makes it a little difficult to park compared to the rivals. As for the Land Rover, it is offered in two different wheelbases. The standard wheelbase is 115.0-inches while the long wheelbase is 122.9-inches. Highlights of the exterior features:

  • 19 inch five split-spoke wheels

  • Auto-dimming power heated exterior mirrors
  • Follow-me-home lighting

Safety
8.0/10

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not conducted any crash tests on the 2014 Land Rover Range Rover since high-end luxury cars often do not get tested by these organizations. That being said, cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, engine immobilizer, and active speed limiter are some standard safety features on the base Range Rover.

However, the Parking Pack which is available on all trims except the top-most one adds parallel park, park exit, perpendicular park and 360-degree, and park distance control. The Vision Assist Pack on the first two trims adds blind-spot monitoring, high beam assist with adaptive headlights, and surround camera system. The same package is also given on the Supercharged trim but it has few additions such as closing vehicle sensing, and reverse traffic detection. The Autobiography trim also enjoys the standard adaptive cruise control with queue assist and intelligent emergency braking features which are optional on the rest. Highlights of the safety features are:

  • Cruise control
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Surround-view camera system
  • Parallel and perpendicular parking
  • Perimetric alarm

Competition

Land Rover Range Rover vs Porsche Cayenne

Though the Range Rover can conquer all types of terrains, the driving capabilities of the Cayenne are not to be underestimated. The Porsche Cayenne is also the lightest and fastest SUV out of all the competitors against the Range Rover. But in terms of fuel economy and cargo space, the Range Rover has the lead. However, if we take the price into account then the Cayenne is a more budget-friendly luxury SUV than the Range Rover.

Land Rover Range Rover vs BMW X5 xDrive35i

The starting price of the BMW X5 is about $28,000 less in comparison to the Range Rover. The former one also has quick feet on the road despite having inferior engine output. Additionally, this rival from the BMW consumes less fuel but has a smaller fuel tank than the Range Rover. Though the X5 might not be as good as the Range Rover it is an attractive option to consider.

Land Rover Range Rover vs Lexus LX 570

The Lexus LX 570 is significantly heavier than the Land Rover Range Rover which will affect its braking performance. On the same note, unlike the Range Rover, the LX 570 does not have engine or wheelbase options. It tries to get ahead with the higher passenger capacity and spacious cargo but fails to do so since the thirsty engine grabs its ankles at the same time. Lastly, the LX 570 is the only rival that has a price tag in the same bandwidth as the Range Rover.

Final Verdict

There is no doubt that the 2014 Land Rover Range Rover has lots of things which make it a great deal to bring home. It is filled with features, the luxury inside out is on par with the rivals, and its all-terrain capability is hard to challenge. But we would suggest that Porsche Cayenne is a much better option for you since it is cheaper, more reliable, and provides a hybrid option as well.
