2014 Lexus RX 350 Review

Pros

  • Refined and luxurious cabin with high-quality materials
  • plush ride
  • comfortable rear seating

Cons

  • No third-row seat option
  • Cluttered electronics interface
  • Counter-productive F Sport version

The 2014 Lexus RX 350 carries forward the same V6 engine that delivers decent overall performance, while still being decent on the fuel economy when compared to its competitors.

Overview

While showing off a premium SUV outlook, the new Lexus RX 350 is a premium-brand crossover. The Lexus RX has always offered and ensured luxurious ride quality, great reliability, and all that at a great price too. For 2014, the RX 350 starts at a price of $39,760. It is a luxurious crossover and is ideal for long trips and city commutes with spacious interiors that can accommodate 5 people. The crossover can be considered as a decent pick for families.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The 2014 Lexus LX 350 has 2 trim levels, namely Standard and F Sport. The front-wheel-drive version of the Standard trim costs $39,760 while the all-wheel-drive retails at $41,160. The top of the line trim comes with AWD as standard. No matter what trim you choose, this SUV has luxurious interiors to keep you comfortable.

We Recommend

If performance is your thing, then go for the F Sport, as it offers the most power. It doesn’t just offer more power, but it also offers better suspension and other performance bits that can improve the overall driving experience. But, the price hike on the higher sport trim isn’t explained by the additional equipment on offer.

Engine and Performance
7.7/10

The RX 350 is powered by a 3.5-Liter V6 that pumps out 270 horses and 248 lb-ft of torque. It is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The FWD comes as standard in the base trim. But, the AWD is available as an optional extra in the standard one, whereas it is standard in the Costlier F Sport.

The engine is refined and does not interfere with the passengers' luxury cruising at all.

The 2014 Buick Enclave has the engine with the most horsepower output of 288hp, which is followed by the Lexus with 270 horsepower. The 2014 BMW X3 comes in as third in terms of power output. The Buick also outperforms all the other cars in terms of torque output with 270lb-ft of torque. Followed by Lexus and BMW with 248lb-ft and 260lb-ft of torque, respectively.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The RX has a great mileage of 18 MPG in the city and 25 MPG on the highway. Keeping in mind its bigger engine and power output, it certainly has decent mileage. These are the mileage of the base engine model. It also gets a gas tank of size 19.2 gallons. The car keeps up well with the class average.

Fuel economy is where the RX gets beaten down by its weaker competitor, the BMW X3. The X3 gives you better fuel economy on the city roads as well as on the highway. It has a combined fuel economy of 24 mpg. And that should motivate you to go on quite a few long drives with a much more peaceful mind. As far as the tank capacity goes, the thirstier Buick has the biggest gas tank(22gallons).

Interior
8.4/10

As you would expect for an SUV, the 2014 Lexus RX 350 is ideal for city commutes with occasional long drives. The spacious interior can easily fit 5 people, and the comfortable seats improve the ride experience. The use of exceptional cabin materials has made the interiors a much better place.

While the front seats could have used slightly more support at certain places, the rear seats are spacious and are adjustable up to a comfortable level. Some users might find the lack of the third row slightly disappointing, but instead it gives you oodles of trunk space.

When compared to others, Buick has the best front shoulder room at 61.6 inches but X3 has the best front headroom at 40.7 inches. In the rear, Buick has the best head and shoulder room with 39.4 inches and 61.3 inches, respectively. The highest cargo capacity is offered by the RX 350, and it is almost twice that of what competition offers at 40 cu-ft. Few major interior features include-

  • 10-way power-adjustable front seats
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Adjustable Steering Wheel
  • Steering Wheel Controls
  • Leather Wrapped Steering Wheel
  • Heated Steering Wheel (Optional)

How intuitive is the 2014 Lexus RX 350’s infotainment unit?

The LX 350 doesn’t have one of the best infotainment systems within the segment. The interface has an input method that is very tacky to use and makes the experience a hassled one. However, it comes loaded with several features, which makes using it further complex.

The system does require you to warm up to it. The SUV comes with a 7” display. The features coming with the infotainment system are:

  • Lexus Remote Touch system
  • Siri Eyes Free
  • 15-speaker Mark Levinson surround-sound audio system
  • Bluetooth
  • CD player
  • USB port
  • Satellite navigation
  • Rear-seat DVD screens

Exterior
9.0/10

Compared to the full-size SUVs that we are used to, the LX 350 is quite different. But within its class, it looks really good. It's more of a beautiful car rather than a butch SUV. The exterior uses rounded edges along with some curves to keep this car looking good.

The car is comparatively light at 4,178 lbs. It has a length of 187.8 inches while other dimensions such as width and height are 74.2 and 66.7 inches, respectively.

  • Rear Defrost
  • Privacy Glass
  • Sun/Moonroof (Optional)
  • Rear Spoiler
  • Aluminum Wheels
  • Wheel Locks (Optional)

Safety
9.3/10

Lexus is making one of the finest safety offerings with the RX 350. It has multiple airbags ensuring the safety of all the passengers. It gets a few active as well as passive systems that can continuously observe the car's surroundings and minimize the impact of a crash. The Lexus RX 350 has also scored well in terms of safety ratings as well. Major safety features include-

  • Brake Assist
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Daytime Running Lights
  • Child Safety Locks
  • Integrated Turn Signal Mirrors
  • Traction Control
  • Blind Spot Monitor (Optional)
  • Auto-Leveling Headlights (Optional)

Final Verdict

The Lexus RX 350 has been one of the best-selling cars within its segment. It offers great comfort, luxury, and features for its price. Also, remember that this car gets the reliable reputation of Toyota, which has always been bulletproof. It has the potential to be your perfect city commuter and also seems like a perfect car for going on occasional long trips. All in all, the SUV has enough points working for it to be a decent consideration in the segment.
