2014 Lotus Evora Review

Pros

  • Dynamic ride and handling
  • Luxuriant Cabin
  • Awe-inspiring Designing

Cons

  • Rear visibility may be an issue
  • Cramped rear seats

Lotus has been revered for its distinctly styled vehicles ever since it was first introduced in 1948. With the release of the Evora in 2010, Lotus has been able to strengthen its position in the market.

Overview

Lotus has been revered for its distinctly styled vehicles ever since it was first introduced in 1948. With the release of the Evora in 2010, Lotus has been able to strengthen its position in the market. The Evora vaunts two potent engine options that are high in both power and performance. Its uniqueness lies in its configuration, which can seat either two or four passengers.

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The Lotus Evora is available in two different trims and two distinct configurations. It can seat two or four passengers depending on the car you opt for. It uses a single engine setup, but it is tuned differently on both trims. The Evora falls in a price range that extends from $68,750 to $79,980.

We Recommend

The S variant of the Lotus Evora is the best bet in the segment that also features other high-performance cars. Its features are price adequate and add to the practicality of the car. The option to opt for a two or four-seat configuration depends on the needs of the traditional buyer.

Engine and Performance
9.9/10

The Lotus Evora makes use of a single engine unit that is distinctly tuned for both the trims. The base trim of the Evora comes equipped with a 3.5L V6 engine which is good for 345 hp of engine power and 295 lb.-ft of torque. It comes attached to the standard 6-speed manual transmission and is channeled as a rear-wheel-drive only.

The Lotus Evora S makes use of a supercharged unit of the base engine and is capable of producing 345 horses of power and 295 lb.-ft of torque. It can complete a 60 MPH sprint in 4.6 seconds. While it is slower than its competitor, in the quarter-mile run, it clocks 12.9 seconds, which is almost a similar lead by which it was lagging in 0-60 mph. It can record a top speed of 177 MPH.

In comparison, the Porsche Cayman GTS makes use of a 3.4L flat-6 engine. It can produce 340 hp of power and 280 lb.-ft of torque. It can complete the acceleration test in 4.2 seconds, making it the fastest car in the segment. In the quarter-mile run, however, it falls to second place, clocking 13.4 seconds. The Cayman GTS is married to a 6-speed manual transmission and is channeled as a rear-wheel-drive variant. On the other hand, the Audi TTS is considerably less expensive than its contemporaries and delivers adequate performance. It can clock 5.2 and 13.8 seconds in the 60MPH and quarter-mile run, respectively. It makes use of an inline-4 unit and is mated to a 6-speed automated manual transmission and is available with an all-wheel-drivetrain only.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The 2014 Lotus Evora is surprisingly efficient considering the segment it falls in. The Lotus’ efficiency, despite housing a powerful engine, makes it a unique proposition in the segment. It can average 17 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway. Combined, it is good for 20 miles per gallon of fuel. Its fuel tank has a total capacity of 15.9 gallons and can cover a distance of 270.3 and 413.4 miles in the city and on the highway, respectively.

In comparison, while Porsche Cayman’s fuel figures are not known, it has been revered for its efficiency in the past. Its fuel tank has a total capacity of 16.9 gallons, making it the largest tank in comparison. Since Porsche also puts major emphasis on weight reduction philosophy, we can see similar efficiency from Cayman GTS too. The Audi TTS is the most economical and efficient car in the segment, averaging 26 miles per gallon of fuel. Its considerably sized fuel tank also gives it an advantage in terms of distance covered, with the TTS managing 347.6 and 489.8 miles in the city and on the highway, respectively.

Interior
6.0/10

The cabin of the 2014 iteration of the Lotus Evora is not as impressive and exciting as its performance. As soon as you enter the cabin, you start to feel a lackluster aura surrounding you. While the seats in themselves provide unparalleled comfort and can be configured to seat two or four passengers, its designing schematics will not sit well with traditional buyers in the segment. Its tranquility, however, is sure to leave you grinning.

Inside the cabin, an additional evident problem is the cramped rear seats, which are best suited for kids only. Another problem would be the tapering roofline creating a bearing on the rearward visibility and further increasing its troubles. The dullness and unimpressive element of the cabin also extend to a meager cargo capacity of 5.7 cubic feet, which causes it to lack practicality.

In comparison, the Porsche Cayman has also been curated to seat two passengers only, while the Audi TTS as standard, has a capacity of four passengers. While its cabin space is not known, the Porsche Cayman does have an airy and capacious feel to its cabin. The cargo capacity on offer of 15 and 13.1 cubic feet for the Cayman and TTS are also seemingly well as per its built and structure and can accommodate two bags without any difficulty. Some other standout interior features:

  • Tilt and Telescopic Steering Wheel
  • Front Cupholders
  • Interior Air Filtration
  • Single Zone Front Air Conditioning
  • Leather Wrapped Steering Wheel
  • Heated Mirrors

How intuitive is the 2014 Lotus Evora infotainment system?

The Lotus Evora’s infotainment system is not the most sought-after in the segment, and like its interior build, it does feel blemished. It, however, does come with some advanced features like a CD player, auxiliary audio input, AM/FM stereo, and iPod connectivity. Some major infotainment features include:

  • Auxiliary Audio Input
  • Pioneer Premium Sound System
  • CD Player
  • AM/FM Stereo
  • iPod connectivity

Exterior
9.9/10

The Lotus Evora is distinctively styled, and as a result, garners abundant attention in the market. It has a unique presence on the road and is sure to turn a lot of heads on the bustling streets. In its stance and build, the Lotus Evora comes with a sculpted bonnet and sloping roofline. The front lights of the Lotus Evora are drool-worthy, and a set of two taillights on either side add completeness to the design.

The rear spoiler induces a sense of athleticism in the Evora. The Lotus Evora is 3,168 lbs in its curb weight and is the heavier of the two cars in comparison. It is 171.7 inches long and sports a wheelbase of 101.4 inches. While its width is not known, the Evora has a total height and ground clearance of 101.4 and 5.7 inches, respectively.

While the Porsche Cayman GTS is the longest car in the segment with a total length of 173.4 inches, the Audi TTS is the widest and tallest measuring 72.5 and 53 inches, respectively. In terms of wheelbase, both contemporaries have shorter base lengths than the Lotus Evora Coupe, and although the ground clearance is not known, the Porsche Cayman GTS and Audi TTS manage to continue travel even on rough terrains. Major exterior highlights of the 2014 Lotus Evora are-

  • Exhaust Tips
  • 19-inch Alloy Wheel
  • Black Pack Package
  • Premium Paint

Safety
7.0/10

The Lotus Evora has not been rated by the IIHS and NHTSA for it is rare and has exclusive demand, but its standard list of safety features speak volume about its dependability and reliability. As standard, the Lotus Evora makes use of 4-wheel disc brakes and comes equipped with driver and passenger airbags. It also includes features like brake assist, traction control, and electronic stability control. Few salient safety features include-

  • Engine Immobilizer
  • Remote Anti-Theft Alarm System
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Driver and Passenger Airbags
  • HID headlights

Final Verdict

The Lotus Evora is in a league of its own. There are very few places where the sports car from the house of Lotus suffers. Its engine is powerful and delivers competing performance without having a bearing on its efficiency. While it does get distinctively designed, the dullness in its interior design is what will leave buyers asking for more. Its dual configuration options make it viable and practical, however, the rear seats do feel cramped. In the segment, we suggest looking out for the Porsche Cayman for all-around performance.
