It is the smaller and cheaper version of the Maserati Quattroporte, and it starts at an MSRP of $65,600. The car is powered by a 3L V6 engine that produces 345 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque in its base setup.

The 2014 Maserati Ghibli is available only in two trims that are very different mechanically. Even though they are powered by the same 3L V6 engine, it produces 345 hp and 369 pound-feet of torque in the base trim, while it is tuned up to produce 404 hp and 406 pound-feet of torque in the higher trim. The base trim is only a rear-wheel drive, while the higher trim is an all-wheel drive. The feature list for the base trim itself is quite plentiful as it comes with 18-inch wheels, Bi-xenon headlamps, keyless ignition and entry, leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, 8.4-inch touchscreen display, eight-speaker sound system, and so on.

Although the price of the base trim, which is $65,600, makes it an appealing offer, the S Q4 is significantly more capable due to its all-wheel-drive system as well as its higher tuned engine. Even dynamically, it is much more capable and proves to be more fun to drive experience. Hence despite the heavier price tag, the S Q4 makes for the better pick.

Despite the difference in power outputs, the only engine in the Maserati Ghibli is a 3L turbocharged V6 power plant which makes for quite a tailpipe symphony. However, this engine is available in two different states of tune in the two trims the car is offered at.

In the base trim, it produces 345 hp and 369 pound-feet of torque and is available only with rear-wheel drive. In the higher trim, the S Q4 produces 404 hp and 406 pound-feet of torque. The only transmission offered is an eight-speed automatic and paddle shifters remain optional on both trim levels.

The sedan touches the 60 mph mark in 5.5 seconds and completes the quarter-mile in 13.4 seconds. This is a category of immense competition in terms of performance, and the Maserati falls back a bit. However, it is the BMW M550i that has the best performance credentials in the lot. When comparing the top speed of these sedans, all of them eerily stop at the point of 155 mph.

Although the engine has updated components, it is still an old one and hence is not the most fuel-efficient one around. It is only a moderately efficient engine, which is rated at 19 MPG combined, 17 MPG in the city, and 24 MPG on the highway, which is still not bad for something its size. The Maserati offers a 21.1-gallon tank, and thus returns a decent fuel range between 358 miles to 506 miles on a full tank of gas, which is way more than necessary.

In comparison, Audi A7 kicks the ball out of the ballpark in terms of fuel efficiency. It is not only the most fuel-efficient car but by a significant amount and then some more. The BMW’s extra performance does pay a small penalty in the department of fuel efficiency in the city but not anywhere else. The Mercedes has the most range because it has a large fuel tank, similar in size to that of the Maserati combined with decent fuel efficiency.

Interior

The interior of the Maserati falls short of many of its rivals. This is due to some illogical mix of some very plush materials like two-tone leather, suede-like headliner, high-gloss wood, open-pore wood, and so on mixed with absolutely terrible plastic quality.

This lack of overall build quality makes one not a big fan of the interiors. Another improvement which is needed inside is regarding space. However, it offers decent storage space as well as cargo capacity.

The newly released infotainment unit in the Maserati Ghibli is a good 8.4-inch touchscreen system. The system has not attracted a lot of complaints and is very easy to use. One will not fail to notice that the system was featured in many cheaper cars from the Chrysler group and hence attracts a bit of slack. The 2014 Maserati Ghibli is a car that is too contrasting, to begin with. It offers one of the most characterful powertrains and exterior designs on one hand. And on the other, you get switchgear from much cheaper cars along with some terrible plastics. On one hand, the sedan performs well, but on the other, is not very reliable. Since it is a confusing car, it would be better to go with a rival unless you are particular about some Italian flair in your garage.
