The 2014 Mazda CX-9 is a very roomy seven seater crossover SUV that this somehow very enjoyable to drive as well. It promises great value for its price tag that starts at an MSRP of $29,985. The car is available in three trim levels - Sport, Touring and Grand Touring. There is only one engine option available and that is the 3.7 L V-6 engine that produces 273 hp and 270 pound feet of torque.

The Touring trim feels like the one to go for as it can be upgraded to include many of the Grand Touring's features, should you want to spend the extra cash. Powertrain and transmission are the same for all the trims. The all-wheel-drive option seem to be slightly worse off in terms of performance and hence we would recommend sticking with the front-wheel-drive trims itself. This means the Touring is only a $2500 option over the base trim.

As we have mentioned, there are three trim levels available namely, Sport, Touring and Grand Touring. We get the option of front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive platforms with only the highest trim level front-wheel-drive being eligible for a towing prep package. The standard feature list is also plenty with 18 inch alloy wheels, roof spoiler, cruise control, full power accessories, trip computer, three zone automatic climate control, 5.8 inch touchscreen display and so on.

The higher trim levels are much more nicely equipped with some very nice entertainment packages available in the Grand Touring trim like a 9 inch screen and 11 speaker Bose surround system with satellite radio, navigation and so on. Other options like a powered liftgate, keyless ignition and entry and so on are available but not on the base trim.

The only engine options on the 2014 Mazda CX-9 is a 3.7 L V-6 that produces 273 hp and 270 pound feet of torque. Transmission option is also standard with a six speed automatic that provides manual shift control.

This transmission is quick in terms of acceleration with a 0-60 mph time of 7.5 seconds. What is surprising is that the all-wheel-drive makes the car a bit slower in terms of acceleration, by a second to 60 mph.

Barring only two rivals, the CX-9 performs very well according to the segment standards. It is also very competitively priced and offers a great deal indeed. It is the second quickest to the quarter-mile by the Hyundai Santa Fe leads the class in terms of performance. The Honda Pilot performs the least in the class.

The EPA estimates that the 2014 Mazda CX-9 returns 21 mpg combined while this translates to 17 MPG in the city and 24 MPG on the highway. These figures are quite decent considering it is an SUV equipped with the V-6 engine that offers seating for seven people. At 20.1 gallons, the fuel tank capacity is however a bit small.

One can observe that the Mazda performs very well according to the class average. It's combined fuel efficiency rating of 21 MPG is only slightly below its competitors which returned one MPG extra. One can also observe that the Dodge Durango has the highest fuel tank capacity while the Hyundai Santa Fe has the least. Its rivals have pretty much equal fuel efficiency ratings.

Interior

Mazda has done an excellent job with the interiors that are graceful and has a certain flair. The material quality can be improved by a lot but the overall construction is quite sturdy. The center console has a little bit of storage but overall you get ready fuel storage spaces inside.

The infotainment system is a 5.8 inch touchscreen but that can also be improved. There is a long feature list and the seats are also very comfortable and supportive. Space can only be a problem in the third row but that is quite understood.

The Hyundai Santa Fe only offers seating for five people which is a drawback in this class. The Honda Pilot on the other hand offer seating for eight which is excellent. The interior space for all rivals is quite the same and even though the Mazda's third row seats are bit cramped, it is not any worse than its rivals. Infotainment features on the Mazda CX-9

The infotainment system on the Mazda CX-9 was upgraded for the previous model year and carries forward without any changes. However, the 5.8 inch touchscreen seems a bit inadequate and the interface does not provide the most seamless experience.

The graphics can be improved and the response time is quite huge. Sound systems offered are pretty nice and the optional 10 speaker Bose system is downright excellent. Some standard features include:

It goes without saying that the Mazda CX-9 is a pretty car to look at. We are expecting a model change very soon but the design does not feel dated as of yet.

The proportions of the car are also quite brilliant and we feel that Mazda has truly done a good job with the design. It is definitely in the prettier side when you compare it with its rivals.

In terms of dimensions, the CX-9 is on the larger side in its class. However, it offers excellent ground clearance and at 5831 lbs it is not a light car either. The Dodge Durango is the saving grace in terms of weight as it is much heavier than all the rivals as well as the longest in terms of the base. If we were to rate chassis however, our pick would be the Mazda as it offers excellent handling and is definitely the most well tuned.

Overall, Mazda generally has a reputation for building adequately safe cars with good structural safety. The standard safety equipment is more towards the passive side including airbags, seatbelts, LATCH systems, etc. but, there is also some emphasis on active safety features like ABS, EBD, traction control, brake assist starting from the base trim itself.

Its course four out of five stars in NHTSA crash tests, while the IIHS rates it as 'Good' in the moderate overlap frontal offset crash test and side-impact test. Some standout safety features include:
