Overall Rating
The Mini Cooper is a style statement and has been for a long while now. No version of the Mini speaks this more than the Mini Cooper convertible.
The Mini Cooper is a style statement and has been for a long while now. No version of the Mini speaks this more than the Mini Cooper convertible. For the 2014 model year, the hatchback variant of the Cooper receives a redesign, while the convertible is carried over unchanged.
Since the Mini Cooper is available only in one trim level, there is not much to recommend in terms of choice. One can however have a look at the many optional extras that the company offers and choose from to make the car unique. Recommended options include 17-inch wheels, sport-tuned suspension, LED headlights, parking sensors, 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, and so on. There are much more personalizations available - a selection of certain exterior and interior details like hood stripes and special interior trim pieces.

The Mini Cooper is available as both hardtop and convertible. These are further divided into Cooper, Cooper S, and John Cooper Works versions. The particular car being reviewed here is a Mini Cooper convertible since all other cars are reviewed separately. This is a fun particular trim level and does not constitute any further sub-trims below it. The Mini Cooper convertible is not at all bare-bones even if you opt for the base trim as it comes with 15-inch wheels, adjustable driving modes, full power accessories, air-conditioning, cruise control, leather-wrapped steering wheel, multicolor ambient lighting, and full power convertible top.

There is only one engine offered on the Mini Cooper convertible, and that is a 1.6L four-cylinder gasoline engine that generates 121 hp and 114 pound-feet of torque. The transmission which comes as standard is a six-speed manual, whereas a six-speed automatic transmission is available as an option. The manual is capable of doing 0 to 60 mph in 8.3 seconds, whereas the automatic is capable of doing 0 to 60 mph 9.5 seconds.

The Audi A3 Cabriolet has the most powerful engine in its class, but it’s also much more expensive. Even though the Volkswagen Beetle convertible is up only by a few horsepower compared to its rivals, it translates better than we expected to real-world performance as the car is much faster during 0 to 60 mph and for quarter-mile timings. The Mini Cooper convertible is the slowest car in the segment, with all its competitors turning to sub-seven-second sprinters to 60 mph.
Fuel efficiency is an area where the Mini Cooper convertible’s 1.6L engine truly shines. Even though the gas tank is quite small at 11.6 gallons, it returns a decent range of 325 miles in the city and 429 miles on the highway. That is how fuel-efficient the engine is. It returns 28 MPG in the city, 35 on the highway, and 31 MPG combined. When you opt for the automatic, the efficiency is slightly lower at 30 MPG combined, 27 MPG in the city, and 35 MPG on the highway.

Even though all the cars in the category have very excellent fuel efficiency figures, the Mini still has the lead. They represent some of the most fuel-efficient cars that money can buy while still providing adequate performance. The most efficient car in the class is the Mini Cooper, but the Volkswagen Beetle offers a longer range due to its larger fuel tank of 14.5 gallons. The MX-5 Miata and the Audi A3 also offer excellent fuel efficiency figures and strike a better compromise in terms of performance as well.
The interior of the Mini Cooper has always been an excellent design. It has a very iconic oversized center-mounted speedometer and has generally playfulness throughout its cabin.
It is not outdated in terms of electronics and has all the necessary convenience features that one would expect from a car of this era. What’s interesting is that the convertible also offers a small sunroof for when you do not want the whole top-down experience. Cargo space is tight at just 6 ft.³, but its seats can be folded up to allow for more space.

Some of Mini Cooper's competitors are way more generous than it, especially in the back. The Mini Cooper is also very narrow and might not suit people with a large frame. It also offers the latest technology and has excellent build quality throughout. The cargo space is practically low for every car in the comparison. The main interior features of the 2014 Mini Cooper convertible include:
Mini Cooper does not just have good interiors but also in-car entertainment. There is an optional touchscreen that is mounted on the center console in two sizes- 6 inches and 8.8 inches. The system is very responsive and quick and is also pretty functional. It offers a Mini-connected infotainment interface that has smartphone integration, easy access to social media, and internet radio stations. Some of the standout infotainment features include:
The Mini Cooper convertible is a very good-looking car, although it does not appeal to many people. Although the quirky design had its fans, it was not well-received by the majority.
The car has very modest dimensions but has design cues from the British icon sprinkled throughout its design. Its modest dimensions mean that it remains very maneuverable in the city but also is fun on a quick drive up the mountains.

The Audi A3 Cabriolet is the heaviest car of the category at 3,428 pounds, followed by the Volkswagen Beetle convertible, which is almost 200 pounds lighter. But these are two of the largest cars in the segment, while the Mini Cooper and the Mazda are the smallest. Mazda’s extreme weight saving comes into play when you look at its curb weight of just 2,332 pounds. Major exterior highlights of the convertible include-
The Mini convertible is a very well-built car that has not cut any corners in terms of safety features, which were updated for this model year as well. It also has been loaded in terms of safety features right from the base trim. The convertible comes with some exclusive safety features like pop-up roll bars and larger front airbags that extend higher up for protection. Some safety features include-
The Mini Cooper convertible is not the most practical car out there, but it is certainly one of the most iconic shapes on the road. However since the hatchback has been updated for this current model year, the convertible is expected to follow suit, and hence it will not be wise to buy one now considering the current circumstances.
