Overall Rating
The FR-S is no boxy Scion like its siblings from the brand, but instead has been developed in collaboration with Toyota and caters to low-budget performance enthusiasts and is pretty appealing at that.
The FR-S is no boxy Scion like its siblings from the brand, but instead has been developed in collaboration with Toyota and caters to low-budget performance enthusiasts and is pretty appealing at that. It follows the company’s mission of wooing you buyers by making stylish, attractive, and fun cars. It offers a generous list of features, vast customization possibilities, low cost, and Toyota’s reliability record.
Cars like the FR-S are more enjoyable with a manual transmission and hence should be the preferred choice, while trim-wise, the higher Monogram trim costs only under $3,000 more than the base and does add a considerable amount of fitment and hence is worth the investment.

The FR-S for the 2014 model year is offered in two trims, and even the base trim comes loaded with plenty of goodies and does not feel bare-bones at all. The Monogram trim adds additional technology and interior creature comforts amongst a few. There is also an option to choose between a manual and automatic transmission to better cater to a wider range of audiences.

The Scion FR-S is powered by a 2.0-liter flat four-cylinder engine which is mated to a 6-speed manual or auto gearbox. The engine produces a solid 200 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque, all of which is sent to the rear wheels only.
The performance is pretty solid too, bringing up 60 mph on the speedometer in just over 6 seconds while the quarter-mile timing is also well under the 15-second mark.

The Subaru BRZ and the Scion FR-S are basically rebadged versions of one another and are mechanically identical in every which way. The Subaru is marginally more expensive than the Scion while the Mazda MX-5 is the quickest of the lot thanks to its no-nonsense lightweight construction and hence also costs considerably more.
The Scion FR-S is a lightweight compact car and hence despite being quick off the line, it ain’t a gas guzzler in any which way. The turbocharged four-cylinder engine is rated by the EPA for 22 mpg of city driving and 30 mpg of highway cruising, while the combined city and highway fuel economy is rated for 25 mpg. The 13.2-gallon fuel tank offers a decent driving range and although it might not look that great at around 300 miles mark, it’s not half as bad considering the size of the car.

The FR-S and the BRZ are both equally efficient since they are both powered by the same 2-liter flat-4 engine. The Mazda on the other hand has marginally higher fuel consumption and also employs a slightly smaller gas tank, which translates to a much shorter driving range as compared to the other two cars.
The interior of the FR-S is more driver-focussed and one can notice the Toyota and Subaru interventions with the usage of switchgear from both the brands.
The cockpit looks a bit bare against the more premium performance compact cars but that is also the charm of such cars, offering sheer performance with very little distraction from the fun element. The seats are firm and offer great support when driving spiritedly, while also are comfortable for long road trips.

The MX-5 offers seating for only 2 occupants and does not feature a rear seat. It also has the most compact trunk which is only good for weekly groceries. At the front, it is more spacious than the Subaru-Scion twins while the trunk capacity is marginally better in the BRZ and FR-S.Â
The 2014 model year sees the standardization of a touchscreen infotainment system for the FR-S but it does not get much functionality until one opts for the optional Bespoke system, which improves the audio system and also adds navigation and smartphone app integration to the car.Â
On the outside, the FR-S looks very stylish and does the job of looking fast and sporty pretty well. The angular headlamps with the aggressive front grille, sharp lines, and the coupe roofline, all make for a handsome sports car. The minimalistic approach means the car is light in weight and the low slung ride height also gives it an appealing stance to the FR-S.

There are very differences between the FRS and the BRZ from the exterior, apart from the different badging. The Mazda on the other hand is considerably smaller and does show its age to a certain extent as the car has been on sale with the iconic design for ages now.
The Scion FR-S inherits safety and reliability factors from its parent brand, Toyota and hence it performs exceptionally well in the crash tests. The NHTSA has rated the 2014 model year car with a perfect 5-star rating while the IIHS has awarded it with their ‘Top Safety Pick’ accolade for its stellar performance in the crash test conducted by them. There may not be many latest safety aids on offer, but it goes with the minimalistic approach of the car, and the available safety features are listed below.
The Scion FR-S is a more affordable alternative to the Subaru BRZ for the ones who have more trust in the Toyota moniker than the Subaru. It is one of the most competitive offerings in the segment, offering slick styling, a solid cabin, decent levels of fitment, and strong performance without having to break the bank.
