Overall Rating
When the xB debuted over a decade ago, the unapologetic boxy design didn’t take much liking in the automotive world, and even with the current generation, it continues with a similar design philosophy that focuses more on practicality than it does on aesthetics.
When the xB debuted over a decade ago, the unapologetic boxy design didn’t take much liking in the automotive world, and even with the current generation, it continues with a similar design philosophy that focuses more on practicality than it does on aesthetics. The compact footprint of the car makes it easy to maneuver within the tight city spaces and yet offers a spacious cabin for all its passengers.
The Release Series 10.0 although has some novelty going for it, but the additional money it charges over the base trim isn’t worth the value that it offers. Hence, it is better to opt for the base trim that keeps the costs low and also offers two transmission options.

The Scion xB is offered in two trims for the 2014 model year with the new limited-run Release Series 10.0 which features a handful of other additional features that weren’t previously available with the standard base trim. The base trim in itself is pretty loaded for the price point and offers great value for the buyers.

The Release Series 10.0 although has some novelty going for it, but the additional money it charges over the base trim isn’t worth the value that it offers. Hence, it is better to opt for the base trim that keeps the costs low and also offers two transmission options.
The new Scion xB is powered by a pretty powerful 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces a healthy 158 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission, depending on buyer preference, while the power is sent to the front wheels only. The performance is pretty brisk and peppy for city driving, where it is intended to be used, and the acceleration timings too are one of the best in the segment.

The Kia Soul is the most affordable car in this comparison and it also has a decent amount of power and torque which translates to decent acceleration timing figures. The Nissan Cube on the other hand is priced similar to the xB and yet has the least engine output which makes it the slowest of the lot.
It’s a known phenomenon that higher power output results in higher fuel consumption in most scenarios and the Scion xB are no exception to that. The EPA rates the 2014 xB for 22 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highways, while the combined city and highway driving is rated at 24 mpg. Although it isn’t too low by any means, it lacks behind when compared to its rivals.

The Nissan Cube is the most efficient wagon in this comparison while the Kia Soul is only marginally less frugal than the Cube. The Soul employs a larger gas tank which aids in providing a much larger driving range on a single tank of gas while the xB which has a similar fuel tank capacity has the shortest driving range.
The Scion xB has been known for being exceedingly customizable and the current model continues that trend, offering tons of options to build the car as per the needs of the buyers.
The interior space is one of its biggest strengths as there is an ample amount of headroom and legroom on offer for all its occupants which makes long drives that much more comfortable.

The Kia Soul has marginally more legroom for the rear-seat passengers and also has the largest trunk capacity with the rear seat in use. The Cube is most compact at the back and also has the lowest cargo capacity while the Scion xB has the highest luggage carrying capacity with the rear seat folded.
The customization aspect does wonders to the cabin experience inside the new Scion xB and apart from the standardized touchscreen interface, one can also opt for the optional Bespoke audio system, smartphone app integration, and navigation which altogether makes the car more livable on a daily basis.
The exterior styling is something that has had the least attention from Scion engineers and that is evident from the way it looks.
The car is boxy with sharp upright body panels and the chunky front bumper and flared-out roofline although try to add some appeal, it does not make much difference to the overall aesthetics of the wagon.

The Scion xB is the largest amongst the wagons present here and hence has a longer wheelbase which opens up more space for the passengers and their luggage. The Nissan Cube is the most compact car here while the Kia Soul is marginally smaller but it weighs considerably less than the other two.
There may not be many safety features available as standard with the Scion xB but it does perform decently in the safety tests. The NHTSA is yet to test the car for 2014, but it did perform well in the crash test conducted by the IIHS. The standard safety features are limited but there are a few optional ones available and some of them are listed below.
The 2014 Scion xB is a no-nonsense wagon that caters to a niche market of buyers that are more budget-minded and practical in nature. The styling isn’t going to woo any of the buyers but the available features and a powerful engine does add value to one of the spacious compact wagons on the market today.
