Subaru is an iconic Japanese car manufacturer known for its fabulous AWD drivetrain and its implementation of Boxer engines in almost every vehicle it produces.
Subaru is an iconic Japanese car manufacturer known for its fabulous AWD drivetrain and its implementation of Boxer engines in almost every vehicle it produces. The Subaru Legacy sedan is quite an old-timer now according to its launch back in 1989 and went through several generations and design upgrades as well.
We would recommend you the 2.5i Sport trim since it gets some attractive features at a reasonable price tag. If you desire a sporty performance then you should consider the 3.6R Limited trim.

We Recommend
We would recommend you the 2.5i Sport trim since it gets some attractive features at a reasonable price tag. If you desire a sporty performance then you should consider the 3.6R Limited trim.
The Subaru Legacy is powered by a naturally aspirated 2.5liter flat-four motor and it is tuned to generate a maximum of 173 horsepower and 174lb-ft of maximum torque. In general, flat-four motors from Subaru are noisier than straight-four motors and the same is the case with the Legacy’s H-4 as well. Apart from getting vocal quickly, the acceleration is also lethargic as well with the only plus side being the AWD layout.
The standard AWD layout provides commendable traction in challenging driving conditions during rain or snow, making the Legacy almost a weather-proof car in terms of driveability. The power figures are decent enough for daily driving purposes but enthusiastic driving and quick overtakes are not this powertrain’s cup of tea. The 0-60mph time of the sedan stands at 8.6 seconds, an average for the class.

The Mazda 6 has much better horsepower and torque ratings as compared to the Subaru Legacy and it offers a more lively performance too. The Toyota Camry takes the middle ground in terms of horsepower but has the least torque output among the three on the list.
The Subaru Legacy disappoints once again in the mileage department after the performance aspect. The city mileage of the sedan is rated at 21mpg and the highway mileage is rated at 29mpg. The combined mileage is rated at 24mpg.

The Mazda 6 has the best mileage ratings among the three on the list with an outstanding 37mpg of highway mileage. The Toyota Camry has some commendable mileage ratings too and is better than the Legacy by a significant margin.
The interior of the Legacy sedan is quite basic and straightforward in terms of the overall design. The controls are laid out quite ergonomically and easy to reach while driving while the switchgear lacks the premium feel that can be found in some of the rivals.
The controls do get a bit cumbersome to use as the trim levels increase. The seats are more than adequately comfortable at both front and rear along with generous amounts of headroom and legroom for the same as well. The trunk space is not impressive though and measures at 14.7 cubic feet only.

The Mazda 6 has a decent and comfortable cabin too with adequate headroom and legroom for both the front and the rear passengers. The Toyota Camryhas the lowest front headroom among the three on the list and has a similar trunk space to the Subaru Legacy.
The basic infotainment features of the Subaru Legacy sedan include a four-speaker sound system with a CD player, an iPod/USB audio interface, and an auxiliary audio jack. The 2.5i Premium trim gets an upgraded 6-speaker sound system. A 7-inch touchscreen display with navigation and smartphone integration is optional as well as a nine-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.
Infotainment features of the Legacy sedan are:
The exterior styling of the Legacy is dated and its proportions along with the design cues makes it overshadowed by some new and fresh sedans such as the Ford Fusion and the Hyundai Sonata.
The hexagonal front grille design along with the swept-back headlight units are bit too exaggerated for today’s standards and is in dire need of a refreshment. The side-profile is slim but the bulging wheel arches destroys the overall flow of the design.

The Mazda 6 looks smart and aggressive with some subtle and tasteful design cues. The Toyota Camry is nothing appealing or fancy but has a functional and pleasing overall design as compared to the Subaru Legacy.
The Legacy bagges an excellent 5-star rating from the NHTSA and a top “Good” rating from the IIHS as well that establishes its safety aspect. The standard safety features of the sedan include stability and traction control, antilock disc brakes, front side airbags, and side curtain airbags. The rearview camera is offered as an optional feature.
Safety features:
In a crowd of modern, functional, and fuel-efficient affordable sedans, the Subaru Legacy stands out as an aging sedan with dated design, a weak performance from its base engine, and a subpar fuel economy. What attracts some buyers towards it is its 3.6liter motor and the standard AWD drivetrain layout.
