The 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in a total of four trims. The powertrain is standard throughout the trim levels while the drivetrain layout is offered in two options, an FWD and an AWD layout. The price of the base S trim starts from $23,305 and makes its presence felt in the affordable crossover segment. Despite being quite aggressively priced the SUV offers some handsome set of features in the base trim.
The SE trim comes with some premium features with a reasonable price bump, heated headlamp washer nozzle being an example. Stepping up to the SEL trim only adds a few features such as a panoramic sunroof, a premium audio system, and dual-zone climate control. The top-end R-Line trim veers into the premium price bracket with an excellent set of features such as Adaptive bi-xenon headlights with LED running lights, a sports body kit, a sport-tuned suspension, LED license plate illumination, and aims to offer a sporty experience.

The 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan is powered by a standard turbocharged 2.0liter four-cylinder motor. The engine has been tuned to generate a maximum of 200 horsepower and 207lb-ft of maximum torque. The power figures are quite strong for a compact crossover SUV and offer a punchy performance. The motor can propel the SUV to 60mph from a standstill well within 7.3 seconds, a decent figure for a compact crossover.
The engine boasts superior refinement levels and a better than average performance with great on-road driveability. The agile handling and responsive steering also further enhance the driving experience of the SUV. The 6-speed manual transmission does a great job with slick-shifting with precision. The R-Line’s sport-tuned suspension setup further enhances the sportiness of the vehicle.

Both the rivals on the list offer much lower power figures, making the Tiguan a clear winner in the performance aspect.
The Tiguan SUV received some criticism owing to its lower fuel economy as compared to its rivals in the segment and Volkswagen has done very little to improve it. That being said, the SUV has a city mileage of 21mpg and a highway mileage of 26mpg. The combined mileage is rated at 23mpg.

The Ford Escape has slightly better city and highway mileage ratings than the Tiguan but is not impressive enough given its power and performance figures. The Honda CR-V also hovers around the fuel economy ratings of the Escape with a slightly better city mileage than the latter.
The interior of the Volkswagen Tiguan is elegant but the designers have restrained it to keep it from overly flashy and bear a classic appeal. The overall quality of the interior materials is superb and feels sophisticated with an abundance of soft-touch and padded surfaces. All the controls are quite ergonomically placed and well within the reach of the driver. The front seats are excellent for regular driving and highway cruising but lack lateral support in case you want to go sideways or drive enthusiastically.
The height-adjustable function for both the front seats compensates for that and allows the driver to find a comfortable driving position quickly. The rear seats are quite comfortable as well with a reclining function for added comfort. 23.8 cubic feet of cargo can be accommodated in the trunk with all the seats up while it can be further increased to 56.1 cu-ft by folding down the rear seats.

The Ford Escape has a similarly spacious cabin as the Tiguan but feels more roomier than the latter and also offers a much bigger initial boot space. The Honda CR-V has a slightly lower headroom for both the front and rear passengers but has the biggest boot space among the three on the list.
The 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan comes with a decently equipped infotainment system with a 5-inch touchscreen display. The system comes with Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity and an eight-speaker audio system with a CD player and auxiliary jack as standard.
The upper trims further add VW Car-Net telematics, iPod connectivity, an upgraded sound system, a six-CD in-dash changer, an SD card reader and satellite radio.
Highlighted infotainment features of the SUV are:
The 2014 Tiguan comes with a conservative yet straight-forward exterior design. There is some evidence of a nice attention to detail in some styling cues, the ones we seldom see on other small vehicles from VW.
The front end looks quite understated with a chrome finished front grille while the side profile looks slim, giving the vehicle a tall-boy stance.

The Ford Escape has a slightly more aggressive front styling with some sculpted out lines on the sheet metal, giving the SUV an interesting look. The Honda CR-V looks like a big and bulky sedan with its swooping front end design while the rear end looks unconventional and weird.
The Tiguan fetched a 4-star out of 5 rating from the NHTSA and a top “Good” rating from the IIHS which translates to a superb safety aspect for this vehicle. The standard safety features of the SUV includes traction and stability control, antilock disc brakes, front side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Volkswagen’s all-new standard Car-Net telematics system includes automatic crash notification, roadside assistance, remote vehicle access, stolen vehicle location and geo-fencing.
Some important safety features of the SUV are:
The Volkswagen Tiguan is all set to give its rivals a tough competition with its strong performance and commendable practicality. Though the base trim might feel a bit under-equipped, but the mid-level trims do offer some tasteful features at a reasonable price.
