Overall Rating
The 2014 Volvo XC60 is equipped with a 3.2-line 6 cylinder engine and is on par with the competition in terms of power generation. And not just the power, but the Volvo is excellent on the interiors as well with comfortable seats and layout.
Midsize crossover is a booming market that is ever-expanding and luxury crossovers are the go-to option for families who want a spacious and upmarket cabin for their families with high levels of safety, comfort, and practicality. The Volvo XC60 checks off all the boxes and then some and hence has been awarded various accolades in the industry.
Although the base trim has loads of goodies to keep you and your family in utmost comfort, the powerful T6 is the trim to go for as it gets the more powerful engine and the AWD setup as standard along with a few more luxury features.

The 2014 Volvo XC60 is available in three trims mainly, with two engine options and an all-wheel-drive drivetrain available with all trims. The base trims themselves are pretty much loaded with all the features and technology whereas the higher T6 trims get a more powerful engine, updated powertrain, and few more creature comforts.

Although the base trim has loads of goodies to keep you and your family in utmost comfort, the powerful T6 is the trim to go for as it gets the more powerful engine and the AWD setup as standard along with a few more luxury features.
The 2014 Volvo XC60 is powered by two engine options, a 3.2-liter naturally aspirated inline-6 engine and a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 engine which produces a whopping 325 hp. The base 3.2L engine is good for a healthy 240 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque and the engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission which powers the front wheels as standard.
The base engine manages to propel the XC60 to 60 mph in a respectable 6.9 seconds whereas the quarter-mile is covered in just over the 15 seconds mark. The maximum towing capacity is also rated at 3,300 lbs which incidentally is the same for even the more powerful turbocharged unit.

The Acura MDX has the highest power output whereas the BMW X3 has the highest torque figures, and hence, both are amongst the fastest in the segment. The Audi Q5 has the lowest power output in this comparison and hence is the slowest in the quarter-mile run, whereas the Volvo is the slowest to accelerate to 60 mph due to its lowest torque output.
The large 3.2-liter naturally aspirated engine can only be efficient to a certain extent and it shows in the fuel economy ratings. The EPA rates the XC60 for 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highways, the overall combined fuel economy is rated at 21 mpg. Despite featuring a large 18.5-gallon gas tank, the driving range on the XC60 is limited to well under 400 miles in combined city and highway driving conditions.

The BMW X3 has the most frugal engine here and the sizable fuel tank helps it achieve a decent driving range. The Q5 on the other hand offers the largest fuel tank which translates to the best driving range amongst the cars present here. Although the Acura has identical fuel efficiency ratings as that of the Audi, the small fuel tank adversely affects the driving range.
Volvo seems to have focused on the betterment of the interiors and the XC60 is the first one to get the updated treatment in their lineup and it is also their best effort yet. The metallic thin panel center stack with optional wooden inlays together with the optional two-tone upholstery, makes the car look premium and modern.Â
There is a decent amount of space for all the occupants, both at the front and the rear, whereas the available integrated dual child booster seats are a welcome addition. Cargo space is pretty extensive too as it can hoard over 30 cu-ft of luggage even when seating five passengers, whereas folding down the rear seats opens up a maximum of 67.4 cu-ft of cargo space.Â

The BMW X3 is the most compact crossover over here in terms of legroom at the front and rear, whereas the Acura feels the most spacious. The Audi Q5 has the least amount of luggage carrying capacity but has a decent amount of space for its passengers. Overall, the Acura is the go-to option as it offers abundant space for both passengers and their luggage.Â
The 2014 Volvo XC60 features a large 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system which Volvo likes to call Volvo Sensus. It functions well for most parts but the navigation system looks outdated. The audio system also makes use of an array of small buttons that look dated too. The interface overall is pretty fluid and intuitive to use, especially when operating the iPod interface.Â
The Volvo XC60 is a rather stylish-looking crossover SUV that has a strikingly different design language than most other cars in the market. Most of the styling is more car-like than simulating a large SUV.
The large headlamps with signature DRLs, the strong character lines all over the car, sleek and aerodynamic body style, are all quintessentially Volvo design elements and it has created its own set of a fanbase as well.

All the crossovers in this comparison are similarly sized and have very little to differentiate between them in terms of dimensions. The Acura MDX stands out though due to it being the longest and yet weighing the least. It also has the lowest ground clearance whereas the Volvo has the highest clearance.
The Volvo name has become synonymous with safety standards over the years and the XC60 is not letting the image be tampered with in any which way. The overall 5-star safety rating by the NHTSA and the ‘Top Safety Pick+’ accolade awarded by the IIHS for performing exceptionally well in the crash tests conducted by them is a glaring testament for it. The list of safety features on offer as standard with the new Volvo XC60 is pretty and extensive and a highlight of some of those features is listed below.
The Volvo XC60 may not have an engine that provides both, great performance and fuel efficiency and it also may not offer the best in terms of luxury as well. But what it does the best is offers great refinement, higher emphasis on safety, and build quality that is proven to withstand the test of time. When it comes to providing a family-friendly, safe and durable crossover in a stylish package, nothing comes close to the new 2014 Volvo XC60.
