Overall Rating
The new Acura MDX offers one of the best value for dollar ratios in the industry. In fact, the MDX’s laudable residual value is an attractive price point and makes it a viable alternative to well-equipped mainstream models.
The Acura MDX is the number one selling vehicle for Acura. Last year, the MDX was completely redesigned and it rides on an all-new platform that was redesigned from the ground. The engine is a version of Honda’s Earth Dreams 3.5-liter V6 and in this application makes 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. The Acura stands out from its rivals because it is available with different customizable options.
Three different packages can be equipped with the MDX that gives that elegant feel like a BMW. It’s been more minivan than the BMW X5 but way sportier and luxurious than any minivan. Given its extensive roster of standard equipment at a $43,000 starting price, the new Acura MDX offers one of the best value for dollar ratios in the industry. In fact, the MDX’s laudable residual value is an attractive price point and makes it a viable alternative to well-equipped mainstream models. The MDX still undercuts most similarly-equipped luxury rivals by thousands of dollars
The standard MDX adds a lot of standard features such as an 8-inch touchscreen display, satellite radio, HD radio, an 8-speaker sound system, Pandora and Aha internet radio compatibility, etc. Hence, it is better to stick with it. If you want to experience the true luxury feel of Acura, equip the Advance package to unlock all the features of the MDX.

The Acura MDX is powered by a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6 that spits 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. A 9-speed automatic transmission is used to power the front wheels or all four wheels. Speaking of agility, the MDX drives with a lighter, more responsive feel than its family-centric proportions might suggest. The sprightly sensation is out in no small part to a near 270-pound reduction in weight.
As for ride quality, the MDX’s single calibration suspension strikes the ideal middle ground between the sofa-soft Lexus RX and the firmer BMW X5 without the complexity, weight, and cost associated with electronically-actuated systems. While damping forces are set in stone, all MDXs come standard with Acura’s integrated dynamic system which lets you alter throttle response, steering effort, and all-wheel-drive settings.

The powerful Acura MDX beats its rivals in the acceleration and quarter-mile tests and tops the table. The closest to Acura is the German competitor, Audi Q7 thanks to its Quattro system. With 7.9 seconds and 16.2 seconds on the clock, the Buick Enclave grabs the third spot while the Infiniti QX60 slips behind it.
Switching the spotlight to fuel efficiency, the Acura MDX ranks among the most fuel-efficient midsize SUVs available. The EPA-estimated fuel figures are 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. In its all-wheel-drive guise, the SUV returns 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

On the top of the table is the Infiniti QX60 with a combined mileage of 23 mpg while the Acura MDX takes the second spot. With just 16 mpg in the city, the new Audi Q7 has the worst fuel estimates in this segment. Meanwhile, the Buick Enclave sticks in between Acura and Audi.
Road and wind noise is kept to a hush through the use of active noise cancellation and innovative chassis manufacturing techniques. Complementing this well-muted driving experience is a tastefully designed seven-passenger cabin that apart from a generous helping of soft-touch materials, earns the highest marks for its flexible seating and cargo solutions.Â
One push of an illuminated button located on either side with the sliding and reclining second-row seat provides kid-friendly access to the third row while the power liftgate’s jam protection function reacts quickly to prevent irreparable damage to delicate items. The MDX maintains a sizable edge in the hauling department with just over 90 cubic feet of total cargo room.Â

This is quite a competitive segment as the passenger space offered by all the competitors are similar. The Audi Q7’s cabin feels ultra opulent compared to its rivals as it makes use of premium quality materials but it is the lowest in cargo capacity. On the other hand, the Buick Enclave excels in this field with 23.3 cubes while the Enclave and the QX60 stay in the same league.
The Acura MDX is stuffed full of the latest technology. An 8-inch touchscreen display is standard on the MDX. The interface is very smooth but some critics have pointed out the graphics to be dated. The center console has been reduced from 41 buttons to just 9 in this latest generation.Â
For those who like a cleaner and more modern look, it looks great. A rear-seat entertainment system is also available under the Entertainment package. There’s the ELS studio sound system with 8 speakers but audiophiles can upgrade to a 10 or 12-speaker premium sound system. Some of the other features include:
Acura says that the new look of the MDX is executive aero sculpture and it is 17% more aerodynamic than the previous generation model. But still, the new MDX looks a lot like the old one. From a visual standpoint, the Acura MDX embodies a level of sophistication as predecessors never approached.
Contemporary elements like a more streamlined silhouette standard LED headlights and the latest interpretation of Acura’s chrome-tastic front grille exude the sort of upscale character luxury buyers expect. The third-generation MDX is also a bit shorter and narrower to help facilitate maneuverability in tight spaces.

The low curb weight of the MDX helps it to achieve the best performance in the segment. At 201.9 inches of overall length, the Buick enclave is the longest SUV while the Audi Q7 takes advantage of its high ground clearance during off-roading. Some of the exterior highlights include:
The new Acura MDX was well-received by the safety agencies. The IIHS has awarded the SUV with the ‘Top Safety Pick+’ award for its superior performance in all the crash tests. It also received a full five on five stars from NHTSA. As mentioned before, the MDX is loaded with the latest safety technologies that stand out from the crowd. Some of them include:
The 2015 Acura MDX has always been something a little different in the crossover luxury segment. To stay ahead of its rivals, the MDX needed to address its few key weaknesses and lucky for it, Acura has nailed it. At the end of the day, you can purchase a seven-passenger luxury SUV with more prestige, better performance, and superior refinements like a BMW, an Audi, or a Mercedes-Benz but for money, a truly well-rounded choice, the Acura MDX delivers the most rewarding ownership experience.
