2015 BMW X6 Review

The BMW X6 will always be remembered the car that pioneered the trend of coupe-style SUV in the global automotive market.

The BMW X6 is one such car that needs no introduction. It is and will always be remembered the car that pioneered the trend of coupe-style SUV in the global automotive market. But that’s not just what the BMW X6 is about, there’s more to it than what meets the eyes.

The X6 upholds BMW’s performance and comfort standard. Apart from a faultless design, the X6 boasts of a cogent engine and impeccable ride and handling quality. For the year 2015, the new BMW X6 receives new exterior and interior design elements that make it even more attractive.

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The 2015 version of the BMW X6 gets offered in three different trims, the xDrive35i, the xDrive50i, and the sDrive35i. While the former trims are all-wheel-variants, the sDrive35i is available only as a rear-wheel-drive.

The X6 gets priced in a bandwidth that extends from $59,600 to $61,900. The X6 also receives a sport-version that features the M performance engine, the BMW X6M priced at $102,100. While all trims offer similar features, the xDrive50i offers a more powerful engine.

We Recommend

We recommend buying the mid-level trim, the xDrive35i that features a potent engine that churns out 300hp of engine power and 300lb.-ft of torque but is channeled as an all-wheel-drive variant which makes the ride and handling even more poised and confident. If you are someone who is looking for speed and power but do not opt for the performance spec X6 M, the xDrive50i is your pick.

Engine and Performance
8.9/10

Powering the base and mid-level trim of the coupe-SUV is a 3.0L straight 6-cylinder engine that is capable of producing 300hp of power and 300lb.-ft of torque. The top-of-the-line variant, the xDrive50i comes equipped with a 4.4L twin-turbo 8-cylinder engine that produces higher power and torque outputs at 445hp and 480lb.-ft respectively. Thus, the top-rack variant promises more power.

The X6 comes mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission that is available with manual shifting modes. The BMW’s capabilities are evident by the timings that the SUV manages both in the acceleration test and quarter-mile run. The latest iteration of the X6 boosts to the 60 MPH mark in 5.7 seconds which is .2 and 1.2 seconds faster than the competitors in the GL class and Q7 respectively.

In the quarter-mile run, the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class manages a total time of 14.5 seconds while the X6 achieves a similar feat in 14.3 seconds. The quarter-mile timings and top speed are not known; however, it is the GL that leads the pack with a top speed of 130 MPH. The major point of contention in the X6’s favor is that it manages to outshine Mercedes and Audi despite its lower power and torque outputs.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

If we were to study the timeline of SUVs in the automotive market, it has gone through a phase of gaining popularity to the present times when they have become mainstream offerings by all brands. But one thing that has remained consistent is that big, brawny SUVs have never delivered exemplary fuel figures, the BMW X6 is no different.

The BMW X6 averages a mileage of 18 MPG in the city and that of 27 MPG on the highway. Combined, the X6 averages 27 miles per gallon of fuel. The BMW X6 features a decent-sized fuel tank that has a capacity of 22.4 gallons and covers a total range of 403.2 miles in the city and 604.8 miles on the highway which is the highest by any car in the segment.

Interior
8.0/10

The interior quality on the BMW X6 feels top-notch. The infotainment screen that sits centrally feels driver-focused. The cabin reeks of opulence, the wooden accent that runs through the dashboard and the central rotary knob makes the cabin look plusher. The BMW X6 like any other car in the segment has a seating capacity of 5 passengers. The front seats feel comfortable and are accurately positioned which provides good visibility.

However, the rear seats might feel cramped for some and the coupe-like structure causes a reduced head-room. In totality, the X6 has head-, shoulder- and legroom of 38.3/59.5/40.4 inches at the front and 37.2/57/35.9 at the rear. The total cargo capacity on offer is 26.6 cubic feet and with the rear seats folded, the capacity increases to 59.7 cubic feet.

Exterior
9.9/10

On the first glimpse, the hunkered down the coupe-like structure of the BMW X6 will leave you in awe. The X6 is idiosyncratic in design and its stance resounds sportiness and luxury. The way in which the roofline recedes to merge seamlessly with the L-shaped taillights and the hi-tech headlights add a lot of character to the designing elements.

The BMW X6 stands at a total length of 193.8 inches and width and height of 78.3 and 67 inches respectively. It has a total ground clearance of 8.3 inches which is adequate to tread over uneven and rough patches. The X6 has the shortest wheelbase in the segment at 115.5 inches
