The Mercedes-Benz G-Class was an SUV that was developed for military purposes back in the 1970s. Over time it has evolved into a status symbol for luxury car shoppers. Despite being based on an archaic, and dare we say outdated platform, it continues to attract a very large crowd even with a sticker price that starts at MSRP $115,400.
There is not much to be confused over because there is only one trim level on offer, and hence the one you would go for anyway. If you’re in the market to buy a G-Class, it offers you pretty much everything that you would want out of a luxury SUV. Features like 10-way power front seats, satellite radio, and so on are standard but Mercedes offers a lot of optional extras that you can equip and make the car a truly personalized experience.

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is available in two different trims; G550 and G 63 AMG. The primary differences between the two are in terms of a more powerful engine, AMG-specific styling, as well as 20-inch wheels in the G 63, which is reviewed separately. The G550 is available for $115,400 and is itself pretty well equipped with features like 18-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights, heated power-folding mirrors, sunroof, automatic wipers, blind-spot monitoring system, dual-zone automatic climate control, 12 speaker Harman Kardon sound system, and so on.

There is only one engine offered with the Mercedes-Benz G550, and that is the 5.5L V-8 that produces 382 hp and 391 pound-feet of torque. This is a very powerful engine and is enough for all applications that the car would ever be subject to.
This engine is paired to a seven-speed automatic transmission and a full-time four-wheel-drive system that also comes with a low-speed transfer case. This enables the car to be as capable off-road as it is on-road and switches between the two tasks seamlessly. The SUV touches the 60 mph mark in 5.8 seconds and completes the quarter-mile in 14.4 seconds.

All luxury SUVs are powered by engines with power outputs that put track cars to shame. Every car except the Lincoln has a V-8 engine, and all of them produce power of more than 350 hp. This makes all of them pretty fast, and in the acceleration figures, the Mercedes is quite fast itself even though not at the same level as the Range Rover. One should also keep in mind that this car costs a lot extra, and hence is not a fair comparison.
Traditionally, V8-engined SUVs are not even considered for fuel-efficiency tests because they are bound to get very bad scores. The Mercedes, with its naturally aspirated V-8, does not have high aspirations either. It returns 13 MPG in the city, 14 MPG on the highway, and 13 MPG in the combined cycle. It however tries to compensate on the range by virtue of its rather large fuel tank capacity of 25.4 gallons, resulting in 330 miles of city range and 356 miles on the highway.

In comparison, none of the cars really has a strong case for fuel efficiency. The Range Rover’s engine is a wonder because it produces the most amount of power while returning the best fuel efficiency figures. It still strikes the best compromise of the lot because the rivals have lesser performance and lesser fuel efficiency as well. The Mercedes is still the least fuel-efficient of the lot and has abysmally low MPG figures.
The cabin of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class still beckons its utilitarian roots. The material quality can be observed to be noticeably great with plush leather and wood. The soft leather of the seats makes them a very comfortable place to be in despite the shortage of legroom.
In terms of storage spaces, the cabin could have been improved a lot. One major aspect is that its boxy corners and edges make it look a bit less premium than it really is but that is what has helped it attain the status it holds in the market.

In comparison, third-row seating is a big boon that is offered only in the Toyota Land Cruiser and the Lincoln Navigator. Others use this space for cargo, but the fact that the Land Cruiser's lead in terms of cargo space establishes its credentials as the most practical car of the class. The Range Rover has the lowest cargo space at 32.1 ft.³ of storage. Some of its interior features include:

The exterior design of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class has made many people question whether it is a $100,000 car. Its boxy shape is still more suited to its military applications than on the street. However, this appeal is what has made the car very iconic now and definitely has a cult following. The underpinnings of this chassis are still unchanged from what it was in the 70s. It is also a body-on-frame construction and proves to be very reliable in the long run as well.

The G-Wagon only looks small next to its humongous competitors. Everywhere else, it is the landmark due to its sheer size. The road presence this car has is quite commanding, and this results in a car that is extremely heavy at 5,724 pounds. The SUV stands 8.1 inches above the ground, which is the least in the segment. Some standout exterior features include:
Even though the G-Class has not undergone the NHTSA or the IIHS crash test, it cannot be dismissed as an unsafe car. Standard safety features on the 2015 Mercedes-Benz G-Class include antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front and rear airbags, side curtain airbags that cover both rows, blind-spot monitoring system, Mercedes telematics, automatic collision notification, rearview camera front, and rear parking sensors, and so on. Some standout safety features include:
The 2015 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is still a strong contender in the luxury SUV segment despite being around for almost 50 years now. It has excellent acceleration, impressive off-road capability, and an undeniable cult following over the years. It is also loaded with technology and luxury features that make it a compelling buy as long as one has the capability to pay for the hefty price tag.
