Overall Rating
The 2015 Subaru BRZ has been slightly updated both on the inside and outside. The interiors get a slight update in terms of style, whereas there are new exhaust tips on the outside.
While aspiring to buy a sports car, one might look for the horsepower output and engine capacities, but one drive in the BRZ with its rather small engine, and you would walk out with a wide beaming smile on your face. It offers sharp handling, a rear-wheel drivetrain, and sleek sporty looks that help it also look the part.
The 2015 Subaru BRZ has been slightly updated both on the inside and outside. The interiors get a slight update in terms of style, whereas there are new exhaust tips on the outside. The retuned suspension is the major update that has improved the ride quality considerably. With the starting price of $26,490 for the base manual trim, it competes in the market against the heavyweights like the Camaro and the Mustang.
If budget is not a bar, the Limited Edition Series.Blue is the one to go for as it doesn’t cost that much more but adds a lot of styles inside and out and gives you the novelty of owning a one in a thousand car. If you want the basics only, the base Premium trim of the model will be sufficient enough.

The BRZ is available in three trims with an option to choose from a manual or an automatic gearbox. It comes pretty loaded even in the base trim itself, and the higher tims just adds more comfort and luxury features. For the 2015 model year, a Series.Blue limited edition trim is added, which includes the Limited features and adds aero body styling tweaks, black wheels, red brake calipers, interior accent stitching, and a black-and-blue interior scheme and is limited to just 1,000 units.

The Subaru BRZ is powered by the same 2.0-liter flat-4 engine also found on the Scion FR-S in the same state of tune. It produces 200 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque, and the power is sent to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission as standard.
One can also opt for an 8-speed automatic transmission but a car like this is best enjoyed with the manual gearbox. It can do a 0-60 mph sprint in 6.3 seconds, whereas it crosses the quarter-mile finish line in 14.9 seconds.

Both the V6 powered Camaro and the Mustang are more affordable than the Subaru, and their larger engine generates more power and torque. Therefore, they are both faster than the Subaru, with the top honors going to the Chevy Camaro. Although, the Subaru feels more fun and faster due to its lightweight construction, well-balanced chassis, and agile handling.
The lightweight chassis construction also makes a difference in the fuel efficiency department as it manages to return 22 mpg in the city and around 30 mpg on the highway. The EPA rates it for 25 mpg of combined city and highway driving, which is quite good for a sporty coupe. The small 13.2-gallon gas tank is a bummer though as it can only be driven for less than 400 miles on the highway before having to hit the gas station.

The Camaro and the Mustang, both being pony cars, aren’t really efficient when compared with the BRZ and both have similar fuel economy ratings. The Camaro is the least efficient of the lot but features a large fuel tank that more than compensates for its lower fuel efficiency. The Mustang on the other hand offers a similar range to the BRZ despite having a larger fuel tank.
Having developed in association with Toyota, the interior of the BRZ offers a blend of Toyota and Subaru sourced switchgear and materials. The design is pretty simple but is very well laid out, whereas the fit and finish is pretty good as well.
The seats are pretty firm and supportive and do offer adequate support even when driving aggressively. The rear seat is practically useless as there is very little headroom, the legroom is non-existent, and the transmission tunnel too eats up a lot into the cabin space. The cargo capacity too isn’t up to the mark at just 6.9 cu-ft, as competitors offer much better space.

The 2015 Ford Mustang feels the most spacious as there is more headroom, wider seats, and much better legroom for all its passengers. For the rear seats, both the American pony cars are similar to the BRZ and not much should be expected of the back seat of these cars. Although, the luggage carrying capacity is much better than the BRZ. Major interior features include-
Being a back-to-basics, no-nonsense, sports car, the BRZ does not offer many bells and whistles or luxury features even in its top-spec trim. That being said, it does feature a considerable amount of technology to keep up with modern-day standards.
The 6.1-inch LCD display does play spoilsport though as it is not very intuitive to use. Also, the complicated menus in the UI along with the capacitive virtual buttons aren’t easy to press. One has to take their eyes off the road due to the lack of steering wheel controls and the difficult to use UI makes things even worse. Few key features include-
The Subaru BRZ shares platform with the Scions FR-S, it does share similarities in terms of its appearance as well. The large front grille, sleek swept-back headlamps with Projector Beam High-Intensity Discharge headlamps along large rims with side air intakes on the front fender are all reminiscent of the FR-S, not that anybody would complain about it.
The rear fog spoiler also adds to the look of the car.

The Subaru BRZ is the most compact car here, being a small sports sedan, whereas the other two pony cars are much longer, wider, and therefore heavier cars. The Ford Mustang offers the best ground clearance in this comparison while the Camaro has the lowest ground clearance. The Camaro is the longest cat here and also offers the longest wheelbase. Major exterior highlights are-
The co-development of this car by Toyota and Subaru have led this car to achieve great performance in terms of safety, which is clearly evident in the crash tests conducted by the NHTSA and the IIHS. The IIHS has awarded the BRZ with their ‘Top Safety Pick’ award, whereas the NHTSA has rated it with a 5-star overall rating. Although it does not really pack a lot of state of the art safety and driver assistance technology, the safety ratings of the car do give everyone a sense of comfort. Major safety features include-
Although the 2015 Subaru BRZ might not be as fast as the American counterparts and might not feature the latest and greatest of technologies, it offers a fun to drive and compact package that will be appreciated by many. Be it city, highway, or mountain twisties, the BRZ will put a smile on your face and also save you some money by not gulping down fuel as a pony car would. Add to that the Japanese reliability heritage, and you can’t really go wrong with the decision of buying one of these.
