Overall Rating
The base sDrive35i trim priced at $60,600 features a 3.0L I-6 under its hood sending power onto the rear wheels and the $62,900 worth xDrive35i trim has the specs in an AWD drivetrain.
The BMW X6 is an SUV, with major definition changes to the abbrevation "SUV". Sure, its got killer looks and appeeaing styling, but there is much more to this SUV. The BMW X6 is a powerful SUV with a powerful motor and superb driving dynamics coupled with immensely plush ride quality. The X6 ranges in four trim lines starting from $60,600 and going upto $75,300 for the top trim. The pricing is quite a lot more expensive than the similarly priced competition.
The X6 will take you nowhere if you are looking for a family focused car. Its not as spacious as its rivals. The roofline that defines a X6 is majorly responsible for that. The cargo space is small as well. Also, its not that luxurious, and nor is it great off-the-tarmac. The M performance trim costs $102,200 and will not be covered in this article.
The xDrive 50i is a great trim to go for and is equipped with superb comfort and convenience features, along with a powerful V8 engine and excellent driving dynamics coupled with the added stability and grip of the All-Wheel-Drive system. The interior also features a plethora of tech, including the 10.2-inch massive infotainment unit and the Harman Kardon sound system that provides phenomenal levels of sound quality. The xDrive 50i falls in between the base V6 trims and the most powerful and expensive M trim.

The 2016 BMW X6 comes with two engine options. The lower trims i.e the sDrive 35i and the xDrive 35i comes equipped with a 3.0L I-6 that outputs 300hp and 300 lb-ft, while the xDrive50i trim has a bigger twin-turbo V8 engine that produces 445 hp and 480 lb-ft of power and torque respectively. The cars either come with RWD (the sDrive35i) and AWD. The cars are coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The BMW X6 is a sports car with the added comfort and convenience of a Sports Activity Vehicle as BMW calls it. The ride quality is phenomenal and the noise isolation and the comfort and feel inside the cabin are top-notch without a doubt. The driving dynamics and handling of the X6 are superb, and the car feels stable and planted while carving corners as well as in straight-line sprints.

Similarly the AMG GLE and the Cayenne have a larger rear brake at 13 inches.
Steering and Handling
The steering on the X6 is precise and accurate. It turns how muh you want it to turn, with excellent stability but less on response. The X6 has a choice between what kind of ride you'd want: the comfort mode will give a plush ride, whereas the sport mode makes the ride firm and solid. The car is pretty heavy, and you do realise that on turns. The X6 comes with adjustable shock absorbers.
The car's handling dynamics are respectable when you look at its size and weight. The turns around corners are stable, and inspire confidence. All in all, its handling and steering are decent, but lack something that BMW cars usually have- response and involvement.
The X6 is not a very fuel-efficient vehicle as it is a really powerful and well-performing car that delivers exhilarant driving dynamics. The X6 delivers an efficiency of 18 mpg in the city, 24 on the highway, and a combined fuel-efficiency of 21 mpg. The X6 gets a fuel capacity of 22.4 gallons and delivers a range of 403 miles in the city, 537 on the highway, and a combined range of 470 miles.

The BMW X6 features a top-class premium interior with high-quality materials spread all over the inside of the cabin. The trims and materials in the interior include aluminum, bamboo, and carbon fiber, along with leather upholstery with various color options. There is seating for five people in the X6, and the front seats are heated, 14-way power-adjustable seats, and are really comfortable offering great support.Â
An upgrade to 20-way power-adjustable seats is also available, and this option comes as standard in higher trims. Although the rear seats offer enough leg and shoulder room, the sloping roofline does affect and reduce the headroom drastically and so does it make the ingress and egress to and from the second row a little bit difficult.

The interior dimensions of the BMW X6 are on par with the rivals. All of the cars in the competition share similar amounts of front cabin space, but the X6 loses out on the rear headroom because of the sloping roofline. The Porshce and the Merc are much more spacious than the X6. In terms of cargo capacity, the Porsche Cayenne has the most cargo capacity of 62.9 cu-ft, followed by the GLE 450 Coupe with 60.7 cu-ft and the BMW has the least cargo area measuring a marginally lower 59.7 cu-ft. However, the BMW X6 has the most standard cargo capacity at 26.6 cu-ft. Major interior features include-
The 2016 BMW X6 features a 10.2-inch screen infotainment unit with BMW's iDrive interface and a touchpad controller along with navigation, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, and BMW ConnectedDrive services (including BMW Assist emergency communications) and integrated smartphone apps, and a nine-speaker sound system with HD radio, a CD player, USB, and auxiliary audio inputs and 20GB of personal music storage.
Major infotainment features are-
The BMW X6 looks more elegant and stylish with minor redesigns and styling elements added to the 2016 iteration, but the base design does remain the same, and the X6 still looks like a sports sedan in SUV shoes. There is a lot of X5 charaacter in the X6. The headlamps have a very calm but mean look, and the twin-kidney grille in the center just adds more character. The sleek. long and sloping roofline might not be attractive at first, but it does tend to grow on you. The rear has taillights similar to the X5 and there is also a slim spoiler. Massive chrome exhuasts give it a sporty stance.
The X6 features 19-inch alloy wheels in the lower trims and 20-inch ones in the higher trims. The X6 has a curb weight of 4,750 lbs, which is on par with the rivals. It gets a ground clearance of 8.3 inches. Even though the X6 has a big leaning posture, its dimensions are slightly lower than its rivals.

The BMW X6 comes equipped with a plethora of safety features, including stability and traction control, ABS, automatic brake drying, front impact airbags, and side curtain airbags. The BMW Assist emergency communications system with automatic crash notification, stolen vehicle recovery, and on-demand roadside assistance is also a standard feature.
When it comes to hard braking, the BMW X6 can stop from 60mph at an impressive distance of 108 ft, which is comparatively better than the competition. Other safety tech incorporated in the 2016 X6 includes a rearview camera, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, forward collision warning, and mitigation system with pedestrian detection, side- and top-view parking cameras, and a night-vision system that can detect pedestrians. Few key safety features include-
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE 450 Coupe makes the most power between these two, and the GLE line-up has strong engine options. The AMG not only offers powerful engines but also delivers a good eceonomy and range. The GLE has a better reliability score over the BMW X6 as well. The BMW is a bigger car by proportions, and is cheaper as well.
However, the Merc offers premium plush interiors that the BMW cannot match. The features are super-useful and easy to use as well. Marginally, the Merc also has a better cargo capacity. The Benz is better equipped in terms of safety features and scores high in the crash-tests.
2016 BMW X6 vs 2016 Porsche Cayenne
The 2016 Porsche Cayenne might have similar power and torque figures as the X6, but its more fun to drive and has better handling characteristics. The ride is very plush, and has trememndous comfort. It is affordable than the X6 by around $6000 as well.
The X6 does offer the styling, and the 'M' performance option but it is not as versatile as the Cayenne. The Cayenne is a statement, whereas the X6 leaves you deciding whether its a SUV or not. In our opinion, the Cayenne is the better option.
The 2016 BMW X6 is a superb vehicle to opt for. It has all the comfort and convenience features along with a capable powertrain and a stable and grippy AWD system on offer. But the competition, the Mercedes Benz AMG GLE 450 Coupe to be specific, offers better performance for $2,000 extra from the lower trim. This would be a better option to choose as the trim with the V8 engine in the X6 is around $10,000 costlier than the Mercedes.
