Overall Rating
The Buick Verano is an excellent bargain at its base price of MSRP $21,065. The car promises an excellent amount of luxury for that price and competes against much more expensive cars like theAudi A3 in theMercedes-Benz CLA.
The Buick Verano is an excellent bargain at its base price of MSRP $21,065. The car promises an excellent amount of luxury for that price and competes against much more expensive cars like the Audi A3 in the Mercedes-Benz CLA. In fact, Buick has made their car to be as luxurious as anything available in the segment. The Buick Verano is available in six trim levels. There is also a choice of two engines- a 2.4 L naturally aspirated engine producing 180 hp and a 2 L turbocharged engine producing 250 hp.
We recommend buying the Convenience group trim level as it offers excellent features like 18-inch alloy wheels, power driver's seat, heated front seats, and rear parking sensors for just an MSRP of $24,475. Speaking of optional packages, we found the Driver Confidence package extremely attractive as it comes with a blind-spot monitoring system, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and forward collision warning system.

The 2016 Buick Verano is offered with a choice of two engines. The base power plant is a 2.4 L naturally aspirated engine that produces 180 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque. This is then paired to a six-speed automatic transmission and is not very exciting or powerful to drive. Then comes the 2 L turbocharged engine that produces 250 hp and 260 pounds-feet of torque. This engine is much more powerful than the base and is at par with the rivals.
All the cars come with front-wheel-drive drivetrains, which is what is offered in its rivals, the Audi A3 and the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class as well. In the compact luxury segment, this drivetrain layout is not considered a huge disadvantage, hence the car does the 0 to 60 mph time in eight seconds and covers the quarter-mile in 16 seconds, which is quite honestly just average.

The Buick with its base engine is not very powerful to begin with. This does not translate to excellent performance credentials at any point either. The car produces 180 hp in a front-wheel-drive transmission and that is not exactly ideal. The Audi A3 performs better in acceleration despite the 10 hp down on power. The Mercedes-Benz CLA, however, performs much better and thus performs 0 to 60 in a mere 6.7 seconds, which sets the benchmark for the whole class.
The 2016 Buick Verano’s engine is not exactly the latest of technology. It is a simple 2.4 L inline-four and hence does not return the same kind of fuel efficiency as the turbocharged modern units on its competitors. It returns a quite decent 25 mpg on the combined cycle, which translates to 21 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. Even though these are decent figures, we have to look at the competitors to get the whole idea about the segment standard.

Sure enough, the benchmark is the Mercedes-Benz again. The car that impressed us with the most amazing performance of the bunch has again done the same with its fuel efficiency. It returns 30 mpg combined, which is the kind of figure we’ve heard from hybrids not long ago. It returns 38 MPG on the highway, and even with a smaller tank, it has a better range than the Buick. The Audi has the second-best fuel efficiency but loses out a bit on range due to its smaller tank.
Interiors are the department where Buick has made up a bit and has put itself somewhat on par with its German rivals. Material quality is good, and the space offered is quite generous as well.
It fails to impress when compared to the material quality and the design of its rivals but is still quite a bargain at the price range it offers. The sedan accommodates five passengers with ease, and the ride quality is excellent too. It also has excellent cargo space, which is always considered a plus in the compact luxury sedan segment.

Looking at the data, one can observe that the Buick Verano is in fact pretty spacious on the inside. The Mercedes-Benz CLA is extremely cramped in the rear row, especially in terms of legroom. The Verano offers the most amount of cargo space, which is quite an impressive feat. The Audi A3 is spacious in the rear but a little bit cramped in the front. The main interior features of the 2016 Buick Verano include:
The Buick Verano has a good infotainment system that has a touchscreen of 7.7 inches. It displays characters in a very legible manner, and controls are quite easy to use as well.
One also has connectivity with iPhones through wireless Siri communication. The system is standard on all trims except the base model. The standout infotainment features of the 2016 Buick Verano include:
The exterior styling of the 2016 Buick Verano is just conservative. It does not have too much going for it but is pleasantly attractive. The German rivals offer much better cars in terms of design, and the Buick looks a bit outdated if we’re being honest. The car has a curb weight of 3,300 lbs, which makes it the heaviest in the segment.

The Buick Verano is also the biggest car in all dimensions, except the wheelbase. The Audi A3 is much smaller, and that explains its weight reduction. All cars are pretty close to the ground, and users might have trouble if they live in areas where a lot of ground clearance is required. The main exterior features of the 2016 Buick Verano include:
The Buick Verano has been crash-tested by the NHTSA which awarded it a five-star overall rating, which is the highest rating possible. The IIHS has awarded the car with a 'Good' overall rating, which is again the highest rating possible in that test. The car has the amazing build quality and also has excellent safety features to back that up, and hence is a very safe car. Some safety features of the 2016 Buick Verano include:
We find that the2016 Buick Verano is an excellent car for its price, which is an MSRP of just $21,065. Being a few grand lesser than its German rivals, it is definitely an option for somebody who wants excellent ride quality and interior comforts. The German rivals have much more engaging powertrains and also have better build quality and features and whether you want that kind of a thing for a few grand extras is up to you.
