Overall Rating
The 2016 GMC Savana Cargo Van is a full-size van that is now a trusted workhorse for many businesses.
The 2016 GMC Savana Cargo Van is a full-size van that is now a trusted workhorse for many businesses. It has always provided decent powertrains and also a very practical list of features. It provides great towing and hauling capacity even though it has been severely outdated by its rivals.
We recommend buying the LT trim level of the Savana 3500 as that is the option in which the van truly exercises its strength. If you’re looking for a fuel-efficient or feature-laden van then you should probably be looking elsewhere. If you’re looking for absolute towing capacity or practicality, is when you need a van like this. Hence the LT trim level of Savana 3500 offers a lot of cargo space as well as towing capacity which makes it an ideal pick.

The GMC Savana Cargo is offered in two trim levels - LS and LT, which offers the option between two different wheelbase lengths. The standard-wheelbase length is 135 inches wide that is an upgraded 155-inch wheelbase option available. We get options beginning with two engines – a 2 4.8 L V-8 and the 6 L V-8 producing 285 hp and 329 hp respectively. These are pretty powerful and deliver an excellent towing capacity of 10,000 pounds. There are two towing ratings available as well – namely Savana 2500 and Savana 3500.

The 2016 GMC Savana Cargo Van is offered with a choice of two engines – a 4.8 L V-8 engine that develops 285 hp and 295 pound-feet of torque as well as the optional 6 L V-8 that produces 329 hp and 373 pound-feet of torque.
Refinement is mediocre but power delivery is very linear and usable. It is rear-wheel drive by default and the only transmission offered is a six-speed automatic. The van can have a maximum towing capacity of 10,000 pounds and a payload capacity between 3000 and 4145 pounds depending on the configuration.

From the results, we can see that the GMC is a very powerful vehicle in the class. It is not the most expensive of the most modern but promises the highest towing capacity that its rivals cannot match. The GMC’s strengths are its drivetrain itself and that is still very much perfect for business owners looking for a great transport solution. The Ford Transit has comparable performance and is faster in terms of acceleration but does not come close in terms of practicality.
It goes without saying that fuel efficiency will go for a toss with an engine that has the biggest this. Even with a fuel capacity of 31 gallons, the GMC Savana only has 341 miles of range in the city and 496 miles on the highway. It offers only 11 MPG within city limits, 16 MPG on the highways, which results in a combined mileage of 12 MPG. This drops down even further if you opt for the 6 L V-8 engine.

The Ford really impresses the most with its amazing fuel efficiency figures as it is also one of the more powerful cars of the bunch. However, the GMC takes a huge hit in terms of fuel efficiency when you compare it to its class.
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter impressed us with its fuel efficiency but the trade-off for that was the huge drop it took in terms of performance. The Nissan represents the worst compromise of the lot with its inadequate performance and inadequate fuel efficiency.
The Savana’s interiors were designed with only practicality in mind and have survived without an update for a very long time. It is one of the oldest cabins even among commercial vans.
Material quality is terrible and so are other features. The lack of a higher roof option is also a very disturbing fact. Cargo capacity is a very strong 239.7 ft.³ and that is something very practical and usable.

Front-seat space is pretty much the benchmark set by the Mercedes-Benz. All of the vans offer seating for two people as they are all cargo vans. The Ford Transit offers the least cargo space among its competitors, and this is an important parameter here. The GMC is only slightly better and the leader in terms of cargo space is the Mercedes Benz Sprinter. The main interior features of the 2016 GMC Savana Cargo Van include:
The infotainment system is the most basic it can get with features like navigation being offered only as an option. The sound system is also a very basic setup and does not provide any sort of an enjoyable experience.
However, this should suffice for the application it will be subjected to. The main infotainment features of the new GMC Savana Cargo Van include-
The GMC has been a very recognizable shape only because it has not undergone a change anywhere. It still sports the same design that it has been carrying for several decades.
Even though severely outdated, it still manages to get the job done. Dimensionally, the GMC is a smaller car than most of its competitors and also very heavy at 5345 pounds.

The Nissan is a pretty big car when you compare it to its rivals. It is bigger than its rivals in all aspects except height, where the Ford is a bigger car. The Nissan NV Cargo is also the heaviest car in the segment. The GMC seems to have the lowest ground clearance. The main exterior features of the 2016 GMC Savana Cargo Van include:
The GMC Savana Cargo Van has not undergone any sort of crash test - be it NHTSA crash testing or IIHS despite being around for so long. However, this is the norm for commercial vehicles like this to skip this process, and hence we cannot assume anything about its safety in a conclusive manner. The main safety features of the GMC Savana Cargo Van include:
The 2016 GMC Savana Cargo Van is the option worth considering only for people who are looking for the absolute basics when it comes to transportation. It provides very robust powertrains, excellent towing and payload capacities while suffering in terms of features, fuel efficiency, interior quality, and so on. However, it has been a tried and tested formula that has worked brilliantly for decades.
