Overall Rating
In Jaguar’s lineup, the XJ represents the pinnacle of luxury and sophistication. It truly embodies Jaguar’s motto of providing cars with lots of luxury as well as sportiness. It stands out from the German luxury sedans in a unique way.
In Jaguar’s lineup, the XJ represents the pinnacle of luxury and sophistication. It truly embodies Jaguar’s motto of providing cars with lots of luxury as well as sportiness. It stands out from the German luxury sedans in a unique way. The fact that it carries that little bit of drama and comes along with its British heritage but still retains an air of sensibility around it is impressive. It is powered by two excellent powertrains - V-6 and V-8 form and comes with a choice of rear or all-wheel-drive. It starts at an MSRP of $74,400 and competes against the BMW 7-series and the Mercedes-Benz S Class.
Since anyone’s primary objective when buying an XJ would be luxury, we would not recommend the short wheelbase versions due to their lack of rear seat space. The extra money one has to pay for the XJL variant definitely seems worth it, although buyers who are not keen on performance will not benefit much from buying the supercharged variant. Optional extras like Comfort Package, Parking Assist Package and so on add a lot of convenience to the luxury sedan.

The new Jaguar XJ comes with a choice of four trim levels. An XJR variant is also present but is reviewed separately since it is quite different from the luxury sedan. XJ is offered in both short and long-wheelbase versions, the latter being endowed with more features as well as a higher price. Prices start at $74,440 for the R-sport sedan and go all the way up to $95,000 for the XJL Supercharged variant. It offers a lot of standard and optional features which are discussed below.

The 2016 Jaguar XJ gets the choice of two engine options. The XJ R-Sport and XJL Portfolio models are powered by a supercharged 3 L V6 engine that produces 340 hp and 332 pound feet of torque.
Alongside, the XJ supercharged model gets a 5 L V-8 engine that produces 470 hp and 424 pound feet of torque. Both engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and come with the rear wheel drive as standard. Buyers can upgrade to and all-wheel-drive option as well.

One look and we understand just how much more powerful the Mercedes-Benz is when compared to cars in its class. While Jaguar and BMW offer six-cylinder engines at the start of the line-up, Mercedes start off with a mighty V8 and costs that much extra as well. One will never complain about power in any of these cars as they are all pretty quick to begin with. 0-60 mph times also look like they are out of a sports car’s spec sheet. All cars hit 60 by about 5.5 seconds or less.
Even with spellbinding performance, Jaguar does not fail to provide excellent fuel efficiency in the car. EPA estimates that the Jaguar has fuel efficiency of 21 mpg in the combined cycle and 18 MPG and 27 mpg respectively for city and highway cycles. Opting for the all-wheel-drive option drops this figure by almost 1 MPG throughout and is not a considerable hit if you think about it. The V-8 engine returns 18 MPG combined, 15 mpg in the city and 23 mpg of the highway.

Although Jaguar has respectable fuel efficiency, it is the BMW that takes the cake in this respect. The new 7-series returns hardly believable 21 mpg in the city and 29 MPG on the highway. The Mercedes returns slightly worse fuel efficiency compared to the Jaguar. The BMW on the other hand has better range despite having a smaller fuel tank. The Jaguars fuel tank size is 21.7 gallons and is rather sufficient for all intents and purposes.
The Jaguar has an extremely well-designed interior that is modern and classic at the same time. However, it feels out-dated next to its rivals. The use of plastic and the fact that some parts are shared with smaller cars in the brand’s line-up makes it a little less worthy of its company.
Space offered is adequate and the seats are made from extremely supportive and plush maerials. Ambient lighting also adds to the experience but the sloping roof line takes away some valuable headroom.

We can observe that second row legroom as well as headroom is much better in the German luxury sedans compared to the Jaguar. Cargo space is also a little skimpy at 15.2 ft.³ whereas the BMW again excels by offering the most amount of space. The long sunroof makes the cabin airing and makes one forget about the relative lack of space in the rear. Some of its interior features include:
The 2016 Jaguar XJ’s infotainment system is not something that is extremely special about the car. The digital instrument cluster has not suited most people who have used it and definitely remains a place that can be improved.
With BMW and Mercedes offering the best of technology in their infotainment systems, Jaguar has to make up a bit in this direction to remain competitive. Sound quality is nice but features need an upgrade. Some specialities of the infotainment system include:
The 2016 Jaguar XJ is a masterpiece in design. Even though we’ve been seeing the same since 2009, it is absolutely sumptuous to look at. This year sees the introduction of LED headlamps that make the car look sleeker than ever. The car also appears longer than its rivals due to its sloping roof line.

The first thing that comes to mind is that the Jaguar is much lighter than its competitors and this translates to better handling as well. It also has the highest ground clearance and overall remains a fun to drive car. It is shorter in terms of height and length as well as wheelbase. Some of its standout exterior features include:
It goes without question that cars of this category are built to be as safe as possible. However, they are barely ever crash tested and that applies to the Jaguar as well. It comes with a host of safety features and is built to the highest standards to ensure that it is very safe for its passengers and driver. Some standout safety features include:
The 2016 Jaguar XJ is in dire need of an upgrade in terms of infotainment technology but is an excellent car in all other respects. Even next to very competitive rivals like the BMW 7-series and the Mercedes-Benz S class, it still remains the car that is worth buying. It is also pretty much the only option if you want a luxury car that offers spirited handling.
