Overall Rating
The Lexus GX 460 is a full-size luxury SUV from the Japanese luxury car brand and is built on the famed Toyota Land Cruiser Prado platform.
The Lexus GX 460 is a full-size luxury SUV from the Japanese luxury car brand and is built on the famed Toyota Land Cruiser Prado platform. The SUV was introduced in 2002 and is in its second-generation model at present. The SUV offers great comfort and excellent off-roading capabilities owing to the Land Cruiser platform. The SUV is powered by a standard V8 motor that is also found in the bigger LX 470 SUV of the same brand.
We would recommend the Base trim with the Premium Package. But if you desire the extra comfort offered by the adaptive suspension system and are willing to shell out more, then the top-end Luxury trim will fulfill your needs.

We would recommend the Base trim with the Premium Package. But if you desire the extra comfort offered by the adaptive suspension system and are willing to shell out more, then the top-end Luxury trim will fulfill your needs.
The Lexus GX 470 is powered by a single powertrain option only. The motor in question is a 4.6-liter 1UR-FE V8 naturally aspirated V8 unit, whipping out a maximum of 301horsepower and 329lb-ft of torque. The power figures are mediocre for the size and configuration of the motor. The performance is just about adequate within the city limits but quickly runs out of steam once the SUV hits the highways. Under full load, acceleration takes a huge toll and you’ll be compelled to drive in a relaxed manner.
The 0-60mph time of the SUV stands at 7.2 seconds which is below average as per the luxury SUV standards. The motor is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission that handles the gear-shifts smoothly and tackles off-roading in an excellent manner owing to the dual-range transfer case. The refinement levels of the motor are excellent but the whole experience is bogged down due to the lacking agility of the SUV.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 offers a slightly better horsepower rating than the GX 460 using a much smaller motor but has a significantly low torque output than the latter. The BMW X5 has almost similar horsepower and slightly lesser torque output than the GX 460. The X5 has better handling acceleration times than the GX 460, making it an overall better performer than the latter.
The Lexus GX 460 is a hefty SUV and with an inefficient motor, it returns a below-average fuel economy ratings. Within the city limits, the SUV returns a maximum of 15mpg and out on the highways, the number climbs to 20mpg. The combined mileage is rated at 17mpg.

The Mercedes-Benz GLW 350 offers a better fuel economy than the GX 460 with a better powertrain and power management. The BMW X5 is the most fuel-efficient one among the rivals on the list with an excellent highway mileage among the three.
The interior of the 2016 Lexus GX 460 is where all the focus has been put while making the vehicle. The cabin retains a more traditional look by ditching the widescreen monitor and Remote Touch interface found on the newer Lexus vehicles, but that doesn’t take away the overall luxury appeal of the vehicle. The top-end model even includes genuine leather and Mahogany wood trim for the steering wheel and the shift knob.Â
The vinyl upholstery found on the base trim feels low-quality for the hefty price-tag of the vehicle and could’ve been better. The front seats are extremely comfortable and supportive for both long and short trips with adequate adjustment options. The foldable rear seats disappoint terribly with their below-average comfort levels and cushioning. The third-row seats are extremely compact and only suited for small kids.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 has a better overall cabin quality than the GX 460 with comfortable rear seats that the latter lacks. But it offers only two rows of seats unlike the Lexus GX 460. The BMW X5 has an excellent and practical cabin too with adequate headroom and legroom for both the front and rear passengers as well.
The infotainment system of the Lexus GX 460 is quite high-tech in nature and comes with an-8-inch touchscreen display. The standard features of the system include a nine-speaker sound system with a CD player, Siri Eyes Free, satellite radio, HD radio and two USB ports.
Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity is also standard. The optional infotainment features include a 17-speaker Mark Levinson surround-sound audio system, a rear-seat video entertainment system, and Lexus Enform Remote smartphone integration.
Highlighted infotainment features of the GX 460 are:
The design of the Lexus GX 460 is based on the more mean-looking Toyota 4Runner and looks noticeable owing to the Lexus’ “Spindle” front grille. The huge grille gets a heavy dose of chrome with large air dams sitting below it.
The grille is flanked by large headlamp units on either side, giving the SUV an overall more aggressive appeal as compared to some of its rivals. The rear-end looks neat and clean with a Land Cruiser Prado style tail lights and a wide tailgate. Overall, the design language of the GX can be said as “Tough Premium”.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 looks a bit understated as compared to the GX 460 but has a distinctive appeal of its own. The BMW X5 comes with a bit aggressive appeal and a proper luxury SUV design but is the shortest one among the three in terms of height. The GX 460 is the tallest SUV on the list.
Luxury vehicles such as the Lexus GX 460 are seldom put through crash tests owing to their high price tag and low sales volume. The SUV does come with an older body-on-frame structure hence excellent crash ratings are a bit far-fetched for the SUV. That being said, the SUV comes with a host of safety features which include anti-lock brakes, traction and stability control, a rearview camera, front and rear-seat side airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, and side curtain airbags that cover all three rows. The Lexus Safety Connect emergency communications is also standard with automatic collision notification, stolen vehicle locator and emergency assist. The optional Lexus Enform system provides additional control of vehicle functions and information via a smartphone app.
Highlighted safety features of the SUV are:
The Lexus GX 460 is a strong contender but fall short when compared to the GLE. The GX is heavy and the fuel efficiency is the poorest in its class at just 17 mpg combined.
The GLE also offer better luxury and equipment than the GX along with higher cargo space. The only advantage that the Lexus has is the included third row seats.
The X5 is the benchmark in this segment. To beat the BMW the XC90 from Volvo seems a worthy contender but not the Lexus. The GX seems unsophisticated compared to the X5, it truck-based chassis, sheer heft, inefficient V-8 powertrain doesn't help either.
The BMW X5 on the other hand has an efficient inline-6 engine that makes nearly identical power as the GX and weighs a lot less whilst not losing any fuel efficiency.
The Lexus GX 460 is a huge and hefty luxury SUV by today’s standards and comes with a dated body structure. The vehicle is primarily aimed to provide an above average comfort level along with superb off-roading capabilities. The cabin of the SUV is extremely feature loaded but disappoints with sub-par rear seat comfort levels.
