Overall Rating
With the discontinuation of the base IS 250, it is replaced by the IS 200t which brings a new engine along with it. It is equipped with a powerful turbocharged inline-4 engine that provides great overall performance.
The Lexus IS 200t is the brand-new entrant to the IS lineup. The Lexus IS 250 has been discontinued from 2016, and instead, we get the IS 200t and the IS 300. The IS 200t features a 2 L four-cylinder engine that is powerful enough with 241 hp and 258 pound-feet of torque. Benefits of going for a four-cylinder powertrain include better fuel efficiency, lighter weight, and so on. It starts at an MSRP of $37,325 and competes against the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
Since the IS 200t is available as a standalone trim level, one only has the option of choosing between specific optional packages. Lexus offers a lot like the Premium Package that includes leading headlights, heated and ventilated front seats, and a rear-view camera. However the package the recommend is the Navigation package, which replaces the biggest fault in the car, the infotainment system, and adds a lot of necessary features. The Luxury Package and F Sport Package can also be used to personalize the car in the direction you want to.

The 2016 Lexus IS split into three models. The IS 200t is the lowest priced variant of the same that is mainly distinguished due to its frugal powertrain. While the higher-priced variants make use of a 3.5 L V-6 engine, this variant has a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It does not include any more sub-trims and hence is offered a single trim level but with a variety of customization options and plenty of standard equipment. Lexus has truly produced a car that can rival Mercedes, BMW, and Audi with ease.

The IS 200t comes with only one engine option, and that is a 2.0L Turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This engine produces 241 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, which is very close to the V-6 engine’s 255 hp and 236 pound-feet of torque.
One can also note that being turbocharged, the engine produces better torque, and hence remains more drivable in daily situations. An 8-speed automatic with rear-wheel drive is standard.

All cars in this class are powered by 2.0L four-cylinder Turbocharged engines and return about 250 hp. The best figure in the segment is of the Audi A4 with its 252 hp engine. However, this figure does not translate from paper to the road as we can see BMW 3 Series leads the race in 0-60 mph timings. This power dominance of Audi over others shows itself in quarter-mile as it takes the least time of 13.8 seconds.
Fuel economy is the reason why all cars have gone with four-cylinder powertrains. Lexus has ensured that its 3.5L V6 engine will be able to give drivers the thrill of driving, while the 2.0L engine is kept fuel-efficient enough to power its compact sedan without compromising at all on its performance. The IS 200t has a respectable fuel economy with 22 MPG in the city and 33 MPG on the highway. This translates to a combined fuel efficiency rating of 26 MPG. The sedan holds a fuel tank capacity of 17.4 gallons, and hence offers an excellent range of 382 miles inside the city and 574 miles out on the highway.

As we have mentioned, fuel efficiency is quite an important parameter in this category, and all four cars perform very well in the fuel efficiency test. All the Germans on the table come with a combined mileage of 27 MPG combined. The Japanese counterpart stays behind with a margin of 1 and offers 26 MPG combined. Due to the biggest fuel tank on offer, Mercedes takes the center stage by offering the best in class range.
The interior design of the Lexus is conservative but does not feel old. It uses top-quality materials and has an excellent design and layout. High-quality padding can be found everywhere, while the seats are very comfortable and supportive.
The space offered is also quite generous, and the ergonomics make one feel exactly at home inside the cabin. At just 13.8 cu-ft, the trunk capacity is decent but not quite generous.

The Lexus has pretty spacious interiors upfront, probably the most spacious in its class but feels cramped in the back, especially when it comes to legroom. Even though all cars in this category are quite generous when it comes to interior space offered, the Germans have decent space for their front as well as the rear-seat passengers. The cargo space, however, is class-leading at 13.8 ft.³ from the Lexus. Some of its interior features include:
The infotainment unit in Lexus IS 200t is its Achilles’ heel. Even though the system has high-quality knobs and buttons, the remote touch interface is quite an annoyance. Due to the cursor control being very imprecise and the controls being confusing, it becomes much harder to use the system than it really is. Some might be able to work around this problem using voice commands but we prefer the upgraded system available along with the Navigation Package. Few standout infotainment features available are-
The Lexus IS 200t is quite a bargain when you consider that it looks exactly like its higher-priced siblings. But even without this, it is quite the looker due to its amazing blend of elegance, class, as well as sports car-like dynamism.
The design language, which is undoubtedly Japanese, makes sure that nobody makes a mistake about the intentions of the car. Lexus has done a striking job and deserves all the praise in the world.

The Audi A4 is the longest and widest car of its segment but only by a very small margin. In terms of wheelbase, the Mercedes-Benz is slightly longer, while it is also the tallest. But still, all these cars are of very modest dimensions and proved to be excellent commute options that promise a lot of interior and cargo space as well. Some of its standout exterior highlights of IS 200t include:
Lexus has always been a brand that has always had safety as one of the top priorities. In the NHTSA crash test, the Lexus was awarded five out of five stars, which is the highest rating possible. On the IIHS crash tests, the ride receives “Good” ratings for side and roof strength. The front crash prevention is awarded a “Superior” rating, with headlights rated “Acceptable”. Some standout safety features include:
The2016 Lexus IS200t can be thought of as a step in the right direction. It strengthens the case for a Lexus IS more than ever due to its frugal powertrain, which does not compromise on performance either. It sticks to the convention of rear-wheel-drive luxury sedans and remains very competitive to its rivals, while being a breath of fresh air by offering Japanese luxury instead of German. Therefore, we would recommend this offering by Lexus in the segment.
