About 2016 Lexus RX 350

4.2

Overall Rating

The all new RX 350 has a pretty radical design to say the least. The front grille is extraordinarily large while the cuts and creases all over the body is something out of the ordinary as well and Lexus like to refer to it as based on a sword-slashing samurai.

The all-new 2016 Lexus RX 350 has a pretty radical design, to say the least. The front grille is extraordinarily large while the cuts and creases all over the body are something out of the ordinary as well and Lexus like to refer to it as based on a sword-slashing samurai. On the other hand, comfort and quality are still its strongest points and the sedan-like driving dynamics are also a big positive for this luxury crossover. With this redesign, the base price of the 2021 Lexus RX 350 has increased by $1000 and is now available on sale at an MSRP of $41,900.

The Base trim is enough to suffice most needs of the buyers and there are also various options packages to choose from, although one needs to keep an eye on the final price as the options tend to get a bit expensive. The Base trim is available at a price of $41,900 and provides the best value for the money spent.

2016 Lexus RX 350 Review

Pros

  • Attractive and well crafted cabin
  • Silent cabin
  • Strong value

Cons

  • Below average trunk capacity
  • Unintuitive Remote Touch interface

Overview

The all-new 2016 Lexus RX 350 has a pretty radical design, to say the least. The front grille is extraordinarily large while the cuts and creases all over the body are something out of the ordinary as well and Lexus like to refer to it as based on a sword-slashing samurai. On the other hand, comfort and quality are still its strongest points and the sedan-like driving dynamics are also a big positive for this luxury crossover. With this redesign, the base price of the 2021 Lexus RX 350 has increased by $1000 and is now available on sale at an MSRP of $41,900.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The 2016 Lexus RX 350 is offered in only two trim options, namely Base and F-Sport. The base trims get all the bells and whistles that Lexus has to offer, while the F Sport has just a few more luxury and styling features to add to the list. The F Sport trim is available only with the AWD drivetrain and hence gets a center LSD as standard. Here is a list of the key features available with the trims of the Lexus Rx 350.

The Base trim is enough to suffice most needs of the buyers and there are also various options packages to choose from, although one needs to keep an eye on the final price as the options tend to get a bit expensive. The Base trim is available at a price of $41,900 and provides the best value for the money spent.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

The 2016 Lexus RX 350 is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The engine is rated to produce 295 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque, all of which is sent to the front wheels as standard, but has the option to choose for an all-wheel-drive system.

The performance is decent for its class and is nothing exceptional. The RX 350 is also not the most powerful in this comparison. It accelerates from 0-60 mph in 7.3 seconds, while the quarter-mile distance is covered in 15.4 seconds which makes it the slowest car in this comparison. The Lexus RX 350 has a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 lbs. which is pretty good.

The 2017 Cadillac SRX is the most affordable amongst the cars present here and is more powerful and quicker than the Lexus but lacks in terms of towing prowess. The Lincoln MKX on the other hand is only marginally more expensive than the Cadillac but is the quickest of the lot. Although, it offers the lowest towing capacity in this comparison. The Acura MDX although is the most expensive SUV here, and is the quickest of the lot and also has a towing capacity to match the RX 350.

Fuel Economy
6.5/10

The 2021 Lexus RX 350 may not be the top contender in the acceleration tests, but it is one of the most frugal ones in the segment. The EPA rates the 2021 Lexus RX 350 for a fuel economy of 20 mpg of city driving and 27 mpg of highway cruising, while the combined city and highway driving is rated for 23 mpg. The large 19.2 gallon fuel tank aids in providing a pretty decent driving range of over 400 miles of combined driving on a single tank of gas.

The Japanese carmakers are known for their frugality and that is the case in this comparison as well. The Lexus RX 350 is the most fuel-efficient SUV here while the Acura MDX follows it with a combined fuel economy of 22 mpg. The Americans are a bit behind in this aspect with the Cadillac SRX having the highest fuel consumption, but it employs a larger gas tank of 21 gallons to compensate for it.

Interior
8.1/10

The 2021 Lexus RX 350 interior is quite decent. It does get an old-school vibe from it with the dual-tone brown trim color. The dashboard has a unique design that houses the instrument cluster, center console, and touchscreen. There is generous use of control buttons all over the interiors, including the steering wheel. The seats are comfortable and provide decent support to front passengers.

The interior design is pretty appealing as the quality of materials used and the fit and finish are amongst one of the best  There is ample room for all the passengers at the front as well as the rear. The RX 350 can accommodate up to only 5 passengers in total. Behind the rear seats, the cargo capacity is limited to just 18.5 cu.-ft which is not the best.

The Acura MDX is the only car that offers a third row of seats and also has a much larger cargo capacity than the Lexus. The Lincoln MKX has the largest trunk capacity even with all the seats in use and also has the most spacious rear seat in this comparison, although it does compromise a bit on the front seat legroom. The Cadillac has decent luggage carrying capacity but has the most cramped cabin in here. Here is a list of the interior features available with the 2021 Lexus RX 350:

  • 10-way power front seat
  • Heated & Ventilated Front Bucket Seats
  • Manual Reclining Rear Seat
  • F Sport Leather Upholstery

  • Dual Zone Front Automatic Air Conditioning
  • Memory Settings for Driver Seat

How is the 2016 Lexus RX 350 SUV’s infotainment system?

The 8-inch infotainment system can be upgraded to a much sharper looking 12.3-inch unit which although has good graphics, the joystick-like controller of the Remote Touch electronics interface although is better than the touchpad found in the Lexus NX and RC, but is still irritating to use and needs a lot more attention and hence becomes to use while on the go.

The Lexus RX 350 gets all the standard features like Bluetooth connectivity, US ports. satellite radio and a decent 9-speaker audio system for the base model. The RX 350 does miss out on smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Here is a list of the interior features that are available with the 2016 Lexus RX 350:

  • 8.0-inch Lexus infotainment system
  • 9-speaker Lexus/Nakamichi audio system
  • Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming
  • HD Radio
  • Voice Recognition
  • Siri Eyes Free

Exterior
9.0/10

The bold and aggressive exterior styling of the 2016 Lexus RX 350 is something that one would either love or hate. We personally find it very striking and a welcome change from the same old boxy or muscular styling that has been the trend with the SUVs. The front grille is massive and does look a bit over the top, but the sharp headlamps and the angular creases and lines on the body and bumper do make the car look sporty and something special.

The Lexus RX 350 is one of the heaviest with a curb weight of 4222 pounds. It is quite long in length but has a comparatively shorter wheelbase. The major advantage of the RX 350 is its higher ground clearance of 8.2-inches which makes it a better performer off-roads.

The 2016 Acura MDX is the longest SUV in here and yet weighs the least at 3960 pounds. It also rides lowest to the ground at just 5.6-inches. The Cadillac SRX seems to be quite compact in terms of exterior dimensions.

  • Fully Automatic Aero-Composite Led Headlamps
  • LED Brakelights
  • Power Liftgate Rear Cargo Access
  • Colored Grille w/Chrome Surround
  • Chrome Side Windows Trim
  • Lip Spoiler
  • Rain Detecting Variable Intermittent Wipers

Safety
9.3/10

Despite many of its rivals not being crash-tested citing low sales volumes and high value of the car, the Lexus RX 350 did go under testing and came out victorious with flying colors. The 2016 RX 350 scores a pretty solid 4-star overall rating out of a possible 5-star by the NHTSA, while the IIHS has awarded it with their prestigious ‘Top Safety Pick+’ award for performing exceptionally well in the crash test conducted by them.

The 2021 Lexus RX 350 gets a decent amount of safety features that further improve the safety factor of the vehicle. There is an option to opt for the Lexus Safety System + package that brigs in multiple driver assistive technologies. Here is a list of those safety features:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Frontal collision warning and mitigation system
  • Automatic braking
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Lane-departure warning
  • Lane departure intervention
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) And Driveline Traction Control
  • Back-Up Camera
  • Dual-Stage Airbags
  • Airbag Occupancy Sensor

Final Verdict

The redesigned 2016 Lexus RX 350 may not be the best in terms of acceleration performance, but it offers immense value by providing a pretty decent cabin space, great fuel efficiency, stupendous safety record, and standout styling. If you aren’t turned off with the ginormous black-hole of a grille and are fine with rather sedate acceleration performance, the 2016 Lexus RX 350 could just be the right car for you and is available with the best sale offers.
