Overall Rating
The big-daddy of all luxury full-size SUV that can do some serious off-roading is back for 2016 with an all-new twin-turbocharged base engine and an all-new AMG G65 trim. The 2016 Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV starts at $119,900 and gets two turbocharged V8Â and a much more powerful V12.
The enduring Mercedes-Benz G-Class now comes with an entirely new top-of-the-line trim for 2016 known as the G 65 and it comes with a huge 6.0L dual-turbocharged V12 engine under its hood. The base G 550 now comes with a new 4.0L V8 engine whilst all of the trim lines are ready with a redesigned instrument cluster. Interestingly, the G-Class competes with the Porsche Cayenne and Land Rover Range Rover. Let’s see how it fares amongst the other beasts.
The G63 AMG comes as the best option in the G Class lineup. Not only has it got plenty of power, but it also performs exceptionally well in off-road conditions. Although a mid-spec trim, the G-63 AMG costs $139,900, which is a massive upsurge from the base trim, but significantly lower than the supposedly overrated top-end G-65 AMG trim.

As mentioned before, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63 comes equipped with a twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 engine that puts out a maximum power of 563 hp and a maximum torque of 560 lb-ft.
The engine's power is transferred to the rear wheels by default, through an 8-speed automatic transmission. However, an AWD version remains available on the same. The AMG G63 reaches 60mph in 5.4 seconds and crosses the quarter-mile mark in 13.3 seconds which is not the best in segment numbers. The base price of the AMG G63 is $139,900.

In comparison, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S is the fastest of the lot, with a 4.8 L V8 under its hood putting out 570 hp and 590 lb-ft that drags the Porsche to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds and crosses the quarter-mile mark in 12.15 seconds. The Porsche is in sportscar territory when it comes to performance. The exclusive Range Rover comes in second with power outputs of 510 hp and 461 lb-ft and taking 5.0 and a better 11.9 seconds to reach 60mph and cross the quarter-mile respectively. The Mercedes has a 5.5 L V8 under its hood producing 563 hp and 560 lb-ft. However, it is the slowest accelerating, but only by a marginal difference; taking 5.4 seconds to reach 60mph and 13.3 seconds to cross the quarter-mile.

The AMG G63 has the best efficiency figures of 20 mpg in the city, 27 on the highway, and 23 combined. The Porsche has the biggest fuel capacity of 26.4 gallons followed by the Range Rover with a 22.4-gallon tank and the Mercedes with 18.8 gallons of fuel capacity. The G-Class has a very roomy interior with lots of headspace on offer. The seats are luxurious and covered in Nappa leather offering great support and comfort.
The G 550 has a Burl Walnut wood interior trim while the G 63 and G 55 come with designo Black Piano Lacquer wood interior trim. Before you judge the G-Class by its exterior dimensions, ergonomics are modest inside the cabin. The rear seat bench is quite reserved in its sense of comfort.Â

Mercedes offers the most legroom option in the front row, followed by the Porsche and the Range Rover. When it comes to second-row space, the Mercedes still has an edge as it provides legroom of 41.9 inches, while the Range Rover provides 40.2 inches. On the contrary, practicality is addressed timidly, with just 16.9 cu.-ft. of space available to haul your cargo.Meanwhile, the Range Rover boasts 32.7 cu-ft of space, followed by Porsche with 23.6 cu-ft of cargo volume.
With an unprecedented German excellence, technology is never an issue in any of Mercedes’ flagships. As the modern era dictates, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, too, features a 7-inch infotainment unit.
It is equipped with Bluetooth, Aux, and USB connectivity and COMAND navigation along with satellite radio. As for audio, there is a Harman Kardon LOGIC7 sound system fitted inside the G-Class as standard. The audio system sounds great. There is a 4.5-inch multifunction display presenting the driver with essential information and gauges.
The 2016 Mercedes G-Class remains pretty much unchanged on the exterior this year also. It’s still got the signature G-Class look that will draw attention wherever you go with it. The wheels on the base variant are 19" AMG 5-spoke wheels while the AMG G 63 comes with 20" AMG twin 5-spoke wheels and the top end trim features 21" AMG twin 5-spoke polished wheels. Mercedes has tweaked the exterior slightly trying to make a change in the ages-old design but still keeping the essence of the G-Class alive. The 2016 G Class has a ground clearance of 7.7 inches which is enough to tackle pretty much any terrain.

The Mercedes AMG G 63 weighs 5833 lbs followed by the Range Rover that weighs 5150 lbs while the Porsche is the lightest weighing 4927 lbs. The Range Rover also has the best ground clearance of 8.7 inches while the G63 AMG and the Cayenne Turbo have 7.7 and 7.6 inches of clearance respectively. The Range Rover is the longest and widest SUV in the competition.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class comes equipped with a truckload of standard safety features including ABS, stability and traction control, Adaptive braking technology: Predictive Brake Priming, Automatic, Brake Drying, Hill-Start Assist, and Brake Hold feature, Anti Lock Braking System (ABS), and Emergency-sensing Brake Assist (BAS) along with another advanced safety tech. The G 63 stops from 60mph at a distance of 120 ft which is impressive considering the heft of the vehicle. Crash-test scores of the G-Class are not available since NHTSA or IIHS has not tested or rated.
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz G-Class always has its space in the segment and people who are planning to get this one will surely get it cause it is part of a great heritage and legacy. Even though it can be argued that the G-Class is not properly updated or that it has an ancient design language, it is that ages-old design that makes it the G-Class. The 2016 G-Class is a very impressive luxury SUV and comes with a luxurious interior coupled with superb features and very capable engine options at the cost of disappointing fuel efficiency. But that is expected from an SUV of its size and performance. So the G Class is still a very worthy contender in the segment.
