About 2016 Nissan Altima

4.1

Overall Rating

For the year 2016, Nissan updates its Altima mid-size sedan to resemble the likes of Maxima and Murano. But the most important update to the 2016 Altima comes in the form of an all-new SR trim. On the 2016 Nissan Altima SR, you get unique features like 18-inch wheels, rear spoiler, and unique interior trim. Also, the Altima SR can be had with either the base 2.5L motor or the bigger 3.5L V6, which comes with column-mounted paddle shifters. The 2016 Nissan Altima 2.5 starts at an MSRP of $25,295.

The 2016 Nissan Altima gains a significant mid-cycle refresh. The changes for the 2016 Altima includes updated interior and exterior styling, and redesigned headlights. The new, sportier Altima SR trim expands the 2016 lineup. Active grille shutters enhance fuel economy ratings while Nissan added more features to the options list. Pricing begins from $23,335 for the base Altima model powered by a four-cylinder engine while the V6 powered model starts at just over $28,000.

For the year 2016, Nissan has almost revamped the Altima mid-size sedan to resemble the likes of Maxima and Murano. The redesigned front now boasts a V-Motion grille while the headlights and taillights have also been refreshed. In the segment, the new and improved Nissan Altima stands neck-and-neck with the likes of the Toyota Camry and Hyundai Sonata.

The Nissan Altima is available in five different trim levels spread across a defined price range. While the base model is expected to perform its intended job with grace and poise, the newly introduced SR trim is our recommendation. The 2016 Nissan Altima SR packs class-leading features like a rearview camera, rear spoiler, and fog lamps. It gets a price sticker of either $25,595 or $28,215 depending on the engine options one ultimately opts for. At almost $5,000 from the base price, the V6 engine-equipped Altima amplifies the overall riding and driving experience.

2016 Nissan Altima Review

Pros

  • Good acceleration from V-6 engine
  • Class-leading fuel economy figures
  • Easy to drive and handle

Cons

  • Average reliability scores when compared with rivals

For the year 2016, Nissan updates its Altima mid-size sedan to resemble the likes of Maxima and Murano. But the most important update to the 2016 Altima comes in the form of an all-new SR trim. On the 2016 Nissan Altima SR, you get unique features like 18-inch wheels, rear spoiler, and unique interior trim. Overview

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The addition of the SR trim has increased the number of Nissan Altima models by one. So, the 2016 Nissan Altima is available in five variants; Base, S, SR, SV, and SL. Categorized as per configuration, the 2016 Altima is available with two engine options as well. There's a 2.5L I-4 engine standard on all trims while a 3.5L V6 engine is also available on the SR and SL trims. Both these motors are mated to a CVT, the V6 gets column-mounted paddle shifters, while front-wheel-drive remains the sole drive type choice. As standard, the Altima comes equipped with standard features like electronic stability control, keyless ignition, and power mirrors. All models of the 2016 Nissan Altima are fairly feature-packed for the price, but the all-new SR trim gets certain trim-specific features. The exterior of the 2016 Nissan Altima SR is made unique with the use of 18-inch wheels and a rear spoiler as standard. Even the cabin of the Altima SR exhibits a unique interior trim.

Buying Advice

We recommend buying the Altima SR model that comes loaded with exclusive features. Depending on the buyer’s pocket, it can either be had with the 2.5L motor or the 3.5L V6. But not just that, the Nissan Altima SR also gets improved suspension setup, retuned damper calibration, and thicker anti-roll bars. These features make the 2016 Nissan Altima SR the sportiest variant of this family sedan.

Engine and Performance
8.1/10

"Being saddled with an old engine and a CVT, Nissan's engineers were constrained in what they could do to make a sportier Altima. Taking that into consideration, the SR comes off as well as can be imagined." - CarAndDriver

The engine on duty in the 2016 Nissan Altima is a 2.5L I-4 unit that produces 182hp of power and 180lb.-ft of torque. This powertrain comes mated to a continuously variable transmission and front-wheel drivetrain as standard. As one moves higher up the trim ladder, the 2016 Nissan Altima SR and SL get a more powerful V6 engine as optional. Even this motor comes standard with FWD and CVT automatic, but the transmission offers manual control over shifts with the help of column-mounted paddle shifters.

The midsize sedan segment is a nail-biting affair, to say the least, with each offering being rather closely similar to the other. Both the Toyota Camry and Hyundai Sonata feature an inline-4 engine unit mated to a CVT setup and a front-wheel drivetrain, as the 2016 Nissan Altima. The only way to distinguish between the vehicles is how the engines have been tuned. The 2016 Sonata produces the highest power output, however, to the brand's surprise it does not translate into brute performance.

2016 Nissan Altima Acceleration

While the 2016 Nissan Altima is still a family sedan, there's only that much excitement this mid-size sedan delivers. When it comes to outright performance, the Nissan Altima can sprint from 0-60 mph in about 7.7 seconds, which gets reduced to 6.1 seconds with the bigger V6 engine. The quarter-mile sprint comes in 15.1 seconds and the Altima manages to record a top speed of 130 MPH, making it both the quickest and fastest sedan in the segment.

In comparison, the Toyota Camry and Hyundai Sonata both take around 8 seconds to hit 60 mph from 0 while the quarter-mile is reached in 16.2 and 15.5 seconds respectively. Despite lower power and torque outputs, the Toyota Camry puts up quite the fight in the segment.

2016 Nissan Altima Ride and Handling

The 2016 Nissan Altima 2.5 has been reworked to offer an improved compression ratio of 10.3:1. Even the new D-step CVT borrowed from Nissan Murano and Nissan Maxima definitely feels a lot less noisy under stress now. That hasn't caused any performance improvement, but the cabin certainly feels a lot quieter than before. Nissan says they've even stiffened the suspension of the 2016 Altima to offer a more composed ride while the steering wheel has also been recalibrated to offer a better feel and feedback.

With a responsive transmission and engine setup, the 2016 Nissan Altima upholds its authentic ride quality, which may not be the best in the segment, but surely feels relaxed and comfortable. The only problem that the Altima will face is how it performs on rough terrains and uneven patches of road. While not overly concerning, passengers might feel a jolt or two when treading over unfavorable driving conditions.

2016 Nissan Altima Braking

The 2016 Nissan Altima's braking capabilities cannot be accurately determined. However, with adequately sized brakes of 11.7 and 11.5 inches for the front and the rear respectively alongside an average curb weight of  3,197 lbs, the Altima is expected to perform appreciably.

Like the 2016 Nissan Altima, the braking statistics of the Toyota Camry and Hyundai Sonata are also not known. However, the Hyundai Sonata features the largest set of brakes in the segment and will perform consistently, if tested.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

Impressive fuel efficiency has always been one of Nissan Altima's strongest suits. Now as already mentioned, the improved compression ratio of the base 2.5L motor has not altered its performance. However, the highway mpg figures of the 2016 Altima have gone up by a mile, says Nissan.

So the 2016 Nissan Altima averages 27 miles per gallon of fuel in the city and a mesmerizing 39 MPG on the highway. This allows the Nissan Altima to have a combined mileage of 31 MPG. Together with its 18-gallon tank, the Altima covers a total range of 486 miles in the city and 702 miles on the highway. However, as one opts for the 3.5L V6 engine, fuel efficiency does decline.

The fuel capacity is the highest in the Hyundai Sonata at 18.5 gallons, and that allows it to cover over 460 miles in the city and more than 700 miles on the highway.

"The Altima's cabin remains especially quiet at higher speeds, and most of its interior materials have a quality look and feel." - Cars.USNews.Com

The interior quality on the 2016 Nissan Altima is lackluster but the build quality feels quite superior to before. The cabin does get small updates here and there for 2016, however, the plastic touches on the dash and elsewhere in the cabin may upset some buyers. Thankfully, this Nissan sedan can seat passengers in great comfort.

With 36.1 inches of legroom in the second row, there's no shortage of space anywhere. However, the rear seats may feel cramped and are best suited for two adult passengers only. The cabin of the Nissan Altima is not the quietest in the lot. Though it's an improvement from the outgoing iteration, there is still a lot that the brand has to work on. Apart from some pits and potholes, the ride quality is supreme and the seats accord maximum support.

In this segment of affordable mid-size four-door sedans, all cars have enough space to seat five passengers. While the Hyundai Sonata has ample space for the front passengers, it comes at the cost of rear-seat comfort. But the Toyota Camry comes up as the most spacious car with close to 40 inches of legroom in both its rows. With additional space and an upmarket aura that the sedan resonates with, the 2016 Toyota Camry is definitely a delightful place to be in.

2016 Nissan Altima Infotainment System

The infotainment system on the 2016 Nissan Altima feels responsive and intuitive and gets standard features like a 5.0-inch screen, Bluetooth. It also gets Pandora streaming and Google Maps for navigational purposes along with Siri Eyes and Apple CarPlay. These increase usability and practicality of the system. Some other features include:

  • AM/FM Stereo
  • Auxiliary Audio Input
  • CD Player
  • MP3 Player

2016 Nissan Altima Cargo Capacity

Like their interior space, each vehicle in the midsize sedan segment is competitively matched when cargo capacity is concerned. The Nissan Altima has a total space of 15.4 cubic feet behind its second-row of seats. While the cargo capacity may feel underwhelming, it is decent for its class.

"Its hood and fenders have been reshaped, its front fascia lowered, and its grille now features an up-to-date Nissan look." - TheCarConnection.Com

The Nissan Altima carries its old-school design, but with revised styling bits for 2016. It now adopts the same "Energetic Flow" design theme that we saw on the new Maxima and Murano. The overall stance now looks hunkered down, thanks to reshaped hood, fenders, and trunk.

At the front, the 2016 Altima features a newer chrome-cladded V-Motion grille. Moving to the rear, brings attention to its new trunk-lid design that has been brought in place by the new taillights. In the 2016 Nissan Altima SR, there are new smoked-out lights with a rear spoiler and aluminum alloy wheels. At a total length and width of 191.9 and 72.0 inches respectively, the Altima does appear to be bigger than some rivals, but the wheelbase of 109.3 inches is average for the class.

The 2016 Toyota Corolla is almost similarly sized as its competitors. However, it does have the best-in-class ground clearance of 6.1 inches. It is also the heaviest vehicle in the segment weighing 3,300 lbs followed by the Hyundai Sonata and the lightest Nissan Altima weighing 3,252 and 3,197 lbs respectively.

2016 Nissan Altima vs 2016 Toyota Camry

The 2016 Toyota Camry has remained a segment stalwart for quite a long time now. It is reliable, affordable, economical, and incredibly spacious. All these factors make it the ideal choice for a family sedan. But the 2016 Nissan Altima with its redesigned styling and improved performance tuning makes for a compelling case. It is definitely more fun to drive sedans out there.

2016 Nissan Altima vs 2016 Hyundai Sonata

The Hyundai Sonata is, in itself, a total bang for the money it costs. But place it against the Nissan Altima, and the Hyundai Sonata just doesn't impress as much. The Nissan Altima is more powerful while being more fuel-efficient at the same time. The only advantage the Sonata has over the Altima is its more spacious cabin and less expensive price tag.

Final Verdict

The Nissan Altima is a strappy and sturdy vehicle. Its retuned suspension for the 2016 iteration, along with other minor mechanical enhancements and all-new SR trim, allow for much better ride quality than before. Without a doubt, the 2016 Nissan Altima makes for a great family sedan that can also be used for daily driving. It is practical and usable, and while it may be blemished with its lackluster interior build quality. However, at its price point, it packs several hi-tech and advanced features, some of which you will find in cars above its class. While there are competitors that provide build quality, the 2016 Nissan Altima with its powerful acceleration and efficiency can make for a supreme choice. However, if compromises are not your thing, we'd suggest looking elsewhere.
