2016 Nissan Pathfinder Review

The Pathfinder can fit up to seven passengers and is one of the more affordable vehicle in its segment which helps it against its competition and the Pathfinder also has best in class fuel efficiency as well.

The Nissan Pathfinder is an aging mid-size crossover SUV that scores high on practicality and offers a decent performance amidst the slew of modern and better SUVs in the segment. The SUV is a three-row vehicle from Nissan and comes with a comfortable yet practical interior. The SUV is offered with a single V6 engine standard across all the trim levels.

The 2016 Nissan Pathfinder comes with no changes over the previous model year and continues to be the same practical utility vehicle it used to be. TThe SUV is offered in four trim levels starting at a price of $29,830 for the base trim and it goes all the way up to $43,300 for the top-end Platinum trim. The vehicle gets two drivetrain options and single CVT transmission as standard.

We Recommend

The SV trim with AWD layout offers the best value for money among all the trims. If you don’t need it, you can opt for the FWD layout too and save some bucks to spend on some good accessories.

Engine and Performance
7.6/10

The 2016 Nissan Pathfinder is powered by a 3.5liter V6 motor generating a healthy 284 horsepower and 259lb-ft of torque. Despite being an aging powertrain, it is surprisingly potent and can do more than just performing daily chores.

That being said, the motor is not athletic though and the CVT transmission tends to get harsh under hard acceleration. Given the dimensions of the SUV, it is better not driven enthusiastically and it is more suited for relaxed driving styles and relaxed highway cruising.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee has the maximum horsepower on tap while the Chevy Traverse has the maximum torque on tap. The Honda Pilot turns out to be the least powerful one on the list on paper but is a charmer in real life. The Pathfinder is not far behind its competitors with equally strong performance figures.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The Nissan Pathfinder shines in the fuel economy aspect despite being a big SUV with an aging powertrain in the market. The mpg figures are quite respectable considering the SUV houses a sizable V6 motor under the hood. The city mileage stands at 20mpg while out on the highways the number climbs to 27mpg and the combined range is a decent 23mpg.

When compared with the rivals on the list, the Pathfinder comes out as the most fuel-efficient SUV. Both the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Honda Pilot have almost similar mileage ratings but the Chevy Traverse lacks seriously on the city and highway mileage.

Interior
7.8/10

The interior of the Nissan Pathfinder is luxurious and plush while offering a lot of practicality. The gauges and controls are easy to locate and operate as well and the high-quality materials give an overall premium appeal to the cabin. The seats are well cushioned and supportive, providing tireless long trips as well as a cushioned ride over bad patches of roads.

The rear seats are bench-style and can accommodate 3 people with decent comfort. There is a foldable center arm-rest with twin cup-holders between the rear seats. There is ample headroom, shoulder-room, and legroom on offer for both the front and rear passengers.

The Honda Pilot and the Chevy Traverse offer a third-row seat that is decently spacious and can be used for medium to short trips. The Pathfinder takes the lead in overall headroom for the front passengers while the Honda Pilot offers the best shoulder-room among the rivals on the list. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is theoretically the least spacious SUV on the list but it has a well-laid-out cabin and comfortable seats on offer.

Exterior
8.0/10

The exterior of the SUV features a bold yet muscular design language that looks reminiscent of a wagon. The design is nothing extraordinary and hovers around the modern Nissan and Infinitis with a large chrome front grille, sculpted fenders, and a slightly elongated rear end giving it a proper SUV appeal.

The headlights are bigger than average while the taillights feature a wrap-around design and are of a decent size.

The Traverse is the heaviest of the lot while the Pilot is the lightest one. The Traverse also features the longest wheelbase making it more of a city vehicle. The Grand Cherokee has an impressive ground clearance that makes it the most versatile SUV on the list with more than average capability to go off the roads.

Safety
9.3/10

The 2016 Pathfinder's safety stats are quite high on the safety front as well with excellent scores from both the NHTSA and the IIHS. The former rated the SUV a perfect 5-star while the latter gave an overall rating of “Good” on all fronts. Apart from the strong build quality, the SUV also comes with several standard safety aids including antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front-seat side airbags, and full-length side curtain airbags.

Some safety features are as follows:

  • A rearview camera,
  • A 360-degree camera system (Nissan's Around View Monitor)
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Rear cross-traffic alert

Competition
8.0/10

Nissan Pathfinder vs Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Jeep Grand Cherokee preserves the classic Jeep styling with a modern finish on both exterior and interior. Performance is also a strong aspect of the SUV and it triumphs over the Nissan Pathfinder in that aspect. It is also quite close to the Pathfinder in terms of fuel economy ratings too but falls short a bit in terms of cabin practicality.

Nissan Pathfinder vs Honda Pilot

The Honda Pilot is a brilliant offering from the rival of Nissan and it has proven itself as a capable SUV by now. It offers a better and more feature-rich cabin than the Pathfinder and also offers a third-row seating configuration as well. On the performance department, it is marginally weaker than the Nissan Pathfinder but its excellent safety and reliability make up for the shortcomings.

Nissan Pathfinder vs Chevrolet Traverse

The Chevrolet Traverse is a potent competitor of the Nissan Pathfinder and is almost evenly matched with the old-timer. With its modern design and a feature-packed cabin, it shines over the Pathfinder and is quite a reliable vehicle too. Performance-wise, it is very close to the Pathfinder and offers a better torque output as well. It lacks severely in the fuel efficiency department though.

Final Verdict

The Nissan Pathfinder has been around for a long time now and has started to show its age. Despite all these, the SUV still offers strong performance and a comfortable experience. The interiors of the SUV are quite plush and luxurious while loaded with a lot of practicality too. The SUV also offers a very comfortable ride quality too along with a host of convenience features as well.
