About 2016 Scion FR-S

Overall Rating

The 2016 Scion FR-S is an affordable compact sports car. It’s a daily car with looks that can make you a local celebrity.

The 2016 Scion FR-S is an affordable compact sports car. It’s a daily car with looks that can make you a local celebrity. The FR-S has great handling, offers decent performance, and does this while maintaining good fuel efficiency. It’s a simple formula that has worked in the favor of this car: lightweight, rear-wheel drive, and excellent balancing characteristics. However, this beauty also has 3 main drawbacks, i.e., the trunk space is pretty much useless, the rear seats will make a child uncomfortable, and the performance lacks a substantial low-end.

The Scion FR-S comes in two trims, although the second trim has only 1,000 units. Since it is hard to get a hand on the Release Series 2.0, we would advise you to go ahead with the base trim only. We recommend it with the dealer-installed performance parts like the foglights and the upgrades to the infotainment system. Yes, it will cost extra, but it’s a sweet addition to this car. Choose the manual or the automatic, it depends on your liking. Both the gearboxes offer the same levels of satisfaction.

  • Good fuel economy
  • Light Weight

Cons

  • Rear seat is non-existent

Overview

The 2016 Scion FR-S is an affordable compact sports car. It’s a daily car with looks that can make you a local celebrity. The FR-S has great handling, offers decent performance, and does this while maintaining good fuel efficiency. It’s a simple formula that has worked in the favor of this car: lightweight, rear-wheel drive, and excellent balancing characteristics. However, this beauty also has 3 main drawbacks, i.e., the trunk space is pretty much useless, the rear seats will make a child uncomfortable, and the performance lacks a substantial low-end.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The Scion FR-S comes in only one trim, but there is also a limited trim named Release Series 2.0, of which only 1,000 units were made. The base model is available with a price tag of $25,305, while the limited trim is available for $29,510. Standard fitment on all the trims includes air-conditioning, automatic headlights, cruise control, rear-view camera, power accessories, and 17-inch alloy wheels. The FR-S does not get any packages, but there are a lot of dealer-installed features like performance parts, fog lights, a premium sound system, and navigation.

We Recommend

The Scion FR-S comes in two trims, although the second trim has only 1,000 units. Since it is hard to get a hand on the Release Series 2.0, we would advise you to go ahead with the base trim only. We recommend it with the dealer-installed performance parts like the foglights and the upgrades to the infotainment system. Yes, it will cost extra, but it’s a sweet addition to this car. Choose the manual or the automatic, it depends on your liking. Both the gearboxes offer the same levels of satisfaction.

Engine and Performance
9.1/10

The 2016 Scion FR-S is powered by a 2.0L H-4 engine (shared with the Subaru BRZ) that produces an output of 200 hp @7000 rpm and produces a torque of 151 lb.-ft @6400 rpm. The car gets an option between a 6-speed manual transmission and a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The car gets a rear-wheel drive drivetrain as standard. Both the gearboxes are good, choice depends on whether you like to shift gears or not. Although the automatic does return better fuel efficiency numbers. The coupe touches the 60 mph mark in 7.1 seconds and completes the quarter-mile in 15.4 seconds.

The Scion and the Subaru cost nearly the same and have identical power and torque output. Even then, the mechanical differences between the two cars make the Subaru 0.3 seconds faster than the Scion in the 0-60 mph time. Subaru also beats the MINI by 0.7 seconds. The three cars come awfully close in the quarter-mile time, with differences of 0.1 seconds.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The Scion FR-S returns a good fuel economy as a sports car. The car with the manual transmission has a city economy of 22 mpg and a highway economy of 30 mpg. On the other hand, the automatic is better by 3-4 mpg and returns economy figures of 25 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. With 13.2 gallons of fuel tank capacity, the coupe offers a range of 290.3 miles in the city and 395.8 miles on the highway.

All three cars come very close in their ranges and their fuel capacities. The Scion FR-S and the Subaru BRZ are very much similar, and the MINI is ahead with its 27-mpg combined economy. However, the MINI has a smaller fuel tank, at 11.6 gallons, compared to the 13.2 fuel gallon tank of the Scion and Subaru. As a result, the Scion and the Subaru have a better range than the MINI, at 290 city miles and 395 highway miles. The MINI Cooper S has a range of 278 city miles and a very close 394 highway miles.

Interior
7.6/10

The FR-S’s interior is not exactly premium as it's more driver-focused and looks slightly pale in comparison with the rivals. The cabin follows a minimalistic design with hard molded hard plastic (in black), which makes up for most of the interior material.

However, this does not look cheap and is on par with the segment. The silver trim helps add color to this black interior. Its well-built and quality levels are impressive. Overall, this interior will not disappoint.

Like any other coupe, the front row in the Scion offers excellent headroom and legroom, with enough support as well. The driver’s size is not an issue as the low-profile hood provides a great view of the road ahead. Sadly, the rear is the exact opposite, with minimal space for the legs and the head, and works best to keep some luggage. You can extract some extra legroom if you push the rear seats to their rearmost positions. The trunk space is tiny at 6.9 cubic feet, but if you fold the less purposeful rear seats, you can have a better chance at pushing more luggage inside. Major interior features include:

  • Air conditioning
  • Cruise control
  • Power accessories
  • Fold-flat rear seats
  • Tilt and telescopic steering wheel
  • Adjustable 6-way driver seat and 4-way passenger seat

Exterior
5.0/10

The Scion’s design is simple and sporty. The car has an old-school long hood and short deck proportion. The front of the car has a wide grille opening, with sharp and curved vents, and possesses curved lines that flow on the hood and the fenders.

The side of the car is neat and very calm. The roof sweeps up and dives down again in an arc and meets the rear fenders and the short rear. Compared to the front, the rear is very sporty and shows it means business. The blacked-out exhaust setup at the rear enhances the sporty look.

Final Verdict

The 2016 Scion FR-S is an appealing car. The design of the coupe tends to grow on you, just like the decent performance and the sharp handling. The car might be the BRZ with a different badging, but these two cars have a lot of mechanical differences as well. The car is lightweight and has the right setup to satisfy the enthusiast in you. It also offers a decent fuel economy. The area where the car is lacking is in the interior, which can be less engrossing to a few. The car also lacks the low-end and is missed. But overall, the car makes a bold statement, and it’s definitely worth it.
