Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The new Volvo XC90's price starts at $43,950 for the base T5 FWD trim with the base I-4 motor. The 4WD option can be added at $2,000 extra across all the trims. The T6 trim has standard 4WD on all the variations and the T6 First Edition offers the maximum luxury features and is also the priciest. Engine and Performance
8.4/10

Volvo uses a unique twin-charging tech on its 2.0-liter motor provided with the upper trim levels. The system uses a turbocharger and a mechanically driven supercharger, both of which work together to eliminate each other's shortcomings, thereby improving the performance levels while keeping the fuel economy intact.

The 2.0-liter twin-charged I-4 engine onboard the 2016 Volvo XC90 puts out a maximum power of 316 hp and a maximum torque of 295 lb-ft. The engine's power is transferred to the wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission. The refinement levels of the motor are praiseworthy and a lot better than the base 2.0-liter unit and the transmission shifts are seamless and quick as well. The XC90 reaches 60mph from a standstill in 6.4 seconds flat and crosses the quarter-mile mark in 15 seconds which is average at the most for the segment.

Volvo XC90 vs BMW X5

The BMW X5 is a household name in the midsize luxury SUV segment and it does offer a lot for the price tag it carries. The SUV comes with a practical and comfortable cabin with plenty of features to play with along with BMW's iconic Drive infotainment system as well. The practicality aspect of the SUV also beats the XC90 and so does the performance as well. It only falls short in front of the XC90 in terms of fuel economy and driving range.

Volvo XC90 vs Audi Q7

The Audi Q7 is also an iconic offering from the German brand and it perfectly blends comfort with practicality along with performance as well. The cabin of the Q76 is plush and spacious and offers a three-row seating configuration but the third-rows are only good for accommodating kids and luggage items at the most. It performs better than the XC90 in real-world acceleration tests and offers a pleasing driving experience too. Like the X5, it only falls short in front of the XC90 in terms of fuel economy.

Final Verdict

The 2016 Volvo XC90 is a capable SUV with excellent trim levels, offering amazing interiors and futuristic styling. The performance aspect of the SUV is also quite pleasing and is perfectly suited for a more mature group of buyers but stands out in the crowd with its new sharp styling. The comfort levels of the vehicle are praiseworthy too with a plush and premium cabin. The firm ride quality might disappoint some butt its precise handling superior safety is sure to make up for the shortcomings it carries.
