Overall Rating
The TLX is a midsize luxury sedan offered by the Japanese carmaker, Acura, a luxury division of Honda. TLX is what you might expect for a luxury sedan, packed with luxurious stuff and decent specifications under the hood. First introduced in 2015, the new Acura TLX makes its entry and replaces the TL and TSX from the Acura's line-up.
Being a luxury subdivision of the Japanese carmaker Honda, Acura aims at creating buyer-focused vehicles for all classes of buyers. The Acura TLX falls into a niche segment of compact sedans that offer paramount luxury while upholding practicality and a potent engine under its hood. With the 2017 TLX, the brand aims at targeting a market currently occupied by stalwarts like the Audi A4, Infiniti Q60, and Lincoln MKZ.
Ever since it was first introduced in 2015, the Acura TLX has developed its position in the market by being competitively priced and at the same time providing an extensive list of standard features. Its luxuriant aura is reflective in its build and design, however, it does suffer from its own share of flaws. The base engine feels sluggish and its infotainment system does require time to get used to.
To get a bang for your buck, we recommend going for the optional V6 motor, which comes with the Advanced package as it offers a great combination of performance and a great array of features along with plush interiors and a great driving experience. However, if you are looking for a just luxurious daily driver, the 2017 Acura TLX with the Technology Package could be your choice amongst the lineup.

We Recommend
To get a bang for your buck, we recommend going for the optional V6 motor, which comes with the Advanced package as it offers a great combination of performance and a great array of features along with plush interiors and a great driving experience. However, if you are looking for a just luxurious daily driver, the 2017 Acura TLX with the Technology Package could be your choice amongst the lineup.
The 2017 Acura TLX sedan is powered by either a 2.4L 4-cylinder motor or a 3.5L V6 motor, which comes as an option. While the 2.4L inline motor produces 206 hp from its belly, the massive 3.5L V6 mill churns 290 hp from its belly. Both, the transmissions not only feel smooth and offer quick shifts in between the gears, but they also get an advantage over the rival cars as they offer either a 6-speed or a 9-speed automatic transmission.
The base variant feels underwhelming in terms of power but feels adequate for the daily drives. The V6, on the other hand, offers a more thrilling experience compared to the inline mill and feels punchier than the inline motor, and feels refined. With both engine options, buyers can either choose from an FWD or AWD variant.

The inline engine falls short in terms of raw power among its competitors, but with the optional V6 motor under the hood producing a massive 290 hp, the game gets completely changed and surpasses every car in the competition. The Audi A4 with its 2.0L inline-4 engine produces maximum power and torque output of 252hp and 273lb.-ft of torque and is channeled to a 7-speed automatic transmission. While the Infiniti Q60 uses a similar setup, it manages lower outputs in comparison. Closely following the 2017 A4 is the Lincoln MKZ, which also uses an inline-4 engine to produce 240 horses of power.
The Acura TLX is a fast car even for the mid-size luxury standards. From a standstill, the TLX takes off to sprint from 0-60 mph acceleration in 7.2 seconds. Further nailing down the accelerator, the car reaches the quarter-mile pole in 14.2 seconds.

While the TLX's speed is worth noticing, it's not the top of the line. The Audi A4 impressively reaches the 60 mph mark in just 5.7 seconds, and with 6.9 seconds on the clock, the Q60 finishes after it. In the quarter-mile run, however, the Infiniti loses out and lurks at the bottom of the table at 17.3 seconds, while the Lincoln MKZ aces the test clocking 13.7 seconds.
When it comes to driving dynamics, the 2017 Acura TLX sedan offers a mixed experience to the driver. While the 4-cylinder variant of the car feels weak and unenthusiastic as it doesn't throw the driver back in the seat while accelerating, the V6 motor offers an exciting and thrilling driving experience. While driving the Front-Wheel Drive, the car likes to throw the rear out of the curve. But the case feels different with the All-Wheel Drive as it makes the driver feel more confident about the car.
The 8-Speed dual-clutch standard transmission is smooth. As smooth as the power delivery in this car. One thing which makes the TLX stand out is that instead of using a shift lever, there are a few buttons that can be used to park and reverse the car. It might feel messy in the beginning but over time it will grow on the driver. The Integrated Dynamics System (IDS) has four driving modes: Economy, Normal, Sport, and Sport+. Ride quality is comfortable in this car no matter what mode the driver selects.
The brakes in the Acura TLX are quite big. The front brakes are set at 12.6 inches on the front and 12.2 inches on the back. Although the Acura TLX weighs lighter than the other cars, it performed weaker than other heavier cars in the competition. Push down the paddle at 60 mph, it covers 121 ft. to stop.

When being compared in terms of curb weight, the Lincoln MKZ emerges to be the heaviest. The Infiniti Q60 follows the trails of the MKZ to position itself second in line. Even the heaviest car in the lot took 108 feet to halt, followed by the A4 which performed impressively. The Acura TLX could not use its advantage of lesser weight to deliver a good braking performance.
With the 2.4L 4-cylinder engine, the new TLX sedan offers a city gas mileage of 24 miles per gallon, and on the highway, it stretches out to 35 miles per gallon. Combined it averages 28 miles per gallon of fuel. The 2017 Acura TLX is extremely frugal and conservative and coupled with its considerably large fuel tank of 17.2-gallons, it manages a combined average of 482 miles. While the base engine is efficient, the number drops for the V6 engine because of its massive output.

The 2017 Audi A4 manages similar figures as the Acura. The engine is much refined in the case of the Audi helping it to achieve superior figures. However, the Infiniti Q60 offers the highest tank capacity of 20-gallons in the segment and as a result, it beats all others in the range averaging a combined distance of 500 miles.
The Acura TLX is a regular 5-seater car with seats for three in the back. And if the middle seat of the three in the rear is empty, you can pull out the armrest on that seat housing two cup holders. Unlike other compact sedans, the 2017 Acura TLX does not suffer from the segment-wide issues of constrained space for rear-seat passengers. The space inside the rear cabin is quite good even for taller people to sit comfortably without hitting their head on the roof or the knees into the front seats. The 2017 Acura TLX comes with all the essential luxury comfort features. It comes with power-adjustable seats, power windows, power sunroof.
The cabin of the 2017 Acura TLX resonates with an upmarket aura. It sports a dual-tone setup and is adorned with wooden trim throughout the cabin. The upholstery options feel supreme and add to the design characteristics. There is a lot to like about the cabin; the chrome setup that surrounds the infotainment system has a luxuriant appeal to it and so does the leather-wrapped steering wheel with mounted controls. The cabin feels noiseless and its quietness adds to its oneness alongside the high-quality materials used. While the dashboard does seem to have a heightened placement, it does not obstruct outward visibility.

In comparison, the two-door Infiniti Q60 coupe is the only vehicle that can seat four passengers and has the lowest space for the rear-seat occupants. All other competitors are equally matched. The Lincoln MKZ has the best-in-class space for both front and rear-seat passengers, while Audi's A4 sports the most sophisticated and refined interior. Few key features include-
The Acura TLX has a premium 10-speaker audio system to give you the essence of nirvana. It comes with a dual-screen infotainment system which can be frustrating to use especially because of its slow response timings. Audio controls and climate controls buttons take up the place below the infotainment system and they create a fuss rather than help.
Other than that it is equipped with BlueTooth connectivity, USB Port, smartphone integration, voice command feature, and a few others. Satellite Radio and navigation system are also present but the navigation system comes in the category of optional upgrades. However, the 2017 Acura TLX does miss out on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Some might say, the storage is average in the 2017 TLX. But when compared to the Infiniti and the A4, the TLX exceeds its rivals. With the available 13.2 cubic feet of space, it really comes down to the personal preference of how much space you really need. But considering this is a mid-sized sedan, you might be planning to use TLX for the family trip next summer. So you might run out of space for your large suitcases.

In comparison, though the MKZ offers the best-in-class boot space of 15.4 cu.ft., the TLX stands quite well with the A4 when pitted against each other. In the segment, Infiniti stands last with a meager cargo space of just 8.7 cubic feet.
Weighing at almost 3,500 pounds, the TLX is slightly heavier than the Audi A4 but is lighter than the other two by more than a couple of hundred pounds. The 2017 TLX sits at 190 inches long and 73 inches wide. The height of the Acura TLX is 57.0 inches with a ground clearance of 5.8 inches, which is more than what its rivals offer.
The 2017 Acura TLX may not be the largest sedan, but its dimensions are fitting for the segment it falls in. In terms of design, the compact sedan looks distinct with abundant sophistication in its design. While the front lights do have unsaid familiarity in their design, they provide an imposing and domineering look to the sedan upfront. The TLX borrows designing cues from its elder sibling, the Acura RLX, and has a similar level of road presence. The consistency in its design is noteworthy and the sedan reeks of refinement from the first glance.

The 2017 Lincoln MKZ is the largest in terms of dimensions and proportions. At 194.1, 73.4, and 58.2 inches respectively, the MKZ is the longest, widest, and tallest sedan in the segment. Its curb weight of 3739 lbs makes it the heaviest in the segment, just marginally heavier than the Infiniti Q60. Coincidentally both these vehicles have the longest wheelbase of 112.2 inches in the segment. The lightest Audi A4 weighs 3450 lbs only.
Some of the exterior features of the 2017 Acura TLX include:
The 2017 Acura TLX has achieved a perfect score of 5-stars in all the tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA). It even achieved a top rating of good by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety(IIHS). The 2017 Acura TLX comes packed with plenty of safety features. From the standard airbags to the notification alerts you get regarding the safety of the passengers, the 2017 TLX sedan offers a great array of safety features. Following are the standard safety features that come in this car -
The 2017 Infiniti Q60 is definitely a looker. The coupe body structure looks striking and is one reason why buyers tend to prefer it over the sophisticated looks of the Acura TLX. However, in all other imaginable aspects, it is the TLX that performs better. It gets a bigger engine for higher performance, a commodious cabin, and additional seating space. Falling in a similar price range, the 2017 Acura TLX.
Lincoln's MKZ has been around for a decade now, while the TLX stands as a new car with this being its third year since its debut. Both stand true to the 'luxury sedan statement. Both sedans are premium on the inside, but the MKZ holds a serious and more corporate look on its surface. Powered by a rather small 2.0L engine, it is capable of making 240 hp with a turbocharged engine. Even the boot space is bigger than the TLX. The TLX doesn't beat out the MKZ in the competition but stands as a worthy competitor.
Acura TLX Vs. Audi A4 Premium
Audi A4 has been around for two decades now. The A4 is definitely a better car but, it is the costliest of all. Well, you might expect it to be costly with the Premium in the name. And when you compare the TLX with a premium car like A4, it might create some extra boxes in the list which TLX might not tick. Both the cars offer a unique experience, but if you are looking for the best in this segment, then the A4 is a great choice to go with.
With the new TLX, Acura tries to enter a market dominated by the Germans by offering something unique. To get a bite of this market's share, Acura really needs to think out of the box. But in no sense, the Acura TLX stands as a bad choice when you're into saving that extra 5 grand. It provides a couple of powertrain options to choose from and with three trim options in line, Acura aims at creating a perfect TLX for each class of buyers. Its performance is likable and when coupled with refined and sophisticated designing, the sedan does make for an alluring proposition. Go with the new TLX sedan if you want to try something new and unique in this segment by a foreign player.
