About 2017 Audi Q7

4.1

Overall Rating

Unlike the subtle changes of some previous generations of the Q7, the 2017 model has received major changes. In fact, it is the first major redesign of the Q7 undertaken by Audi since its debut.

Whenever you mention the name Q7, you instantly remember the big, plush seven-seater SUV. It's super comfortable and relatively nice to drive. Packed with sublime features and technology, it's no surprise as to why it's popular. The only criticism is the fact that it can realistically sit 5 people as the third row of seats is only suitable for kids. However, the access to the third seats has improved, and so has the comfort inside.

The 2017 model of the Audi Q7 brings in major changes to the exterior and interior of the car. This has been the biggest upgrade on the car after a decade, and its all in the right places. THe sport-wagon design along with the sharp lines make the exterior of the car very appealing. With the prices ranging from just over $49,000 to over $65,000 for the top-spec trim, the Audi Q7 now makes a very strong statement for itself in this class. It boasts of some important advances in its chassis, providing additional strength and rigidity. The only place where the Audi Q7 lacks is in the cargo space, which is expected higher from cars of this segment and size.

We would recommend the Premium Plus trim because it has all the basic and daily use features that you'll need with the massive 3.0L turbocharged 6-cylinder gasoline engine. This engine is sure to put a smile on your face once you step on that gas pedal.

2017 Audi Q7 Review

Pros

  • Super comfortable
  • Solid built
  • Loaded with tech

Cons

  • Limited cargo space
  • The best of the Q7 can be experienced only on the top trim

Unlike the subtle changes of some previous generations of the Q7, the 2017 model has received major changes. In fact, it is the first major redesign of the Q7 undertaken by Audi since its debut.

Overview

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The 2017 Audi Q7 is available in three trim levels namely, Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige. The Premium is the base trim that offers features such as xenon headlights, automatic wipers, power-folding & heated mirrors, panoramic sunroof, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection as standard. The mid-trim or the Premium Plus offers a navigation system, keyless entry, hands-free tailgate opening, side exit warning sensors, and ambient lighting as standard.

The top of the line Prestige trim Prestige comes with the V6 engine and offers a head-up display, additional interior lighting, a high-resolution 8.3-inch central display, and a 19-speaker Bose surround-sound audio system. The 2017 Audi Q7 retails from $49,000 for the base 2.0T premium and goes all the way up to $65,000 for the top Prestige trim. Most of the best features of the Q7 are limited to the top trim, thus limiting the expeience. However, there are some packages available.

Audi has an exhaustive list of equipment which is standard Q7. The base trim offers a healthy list of features too and for budget-oriented buyers is a good bet. The upper trims offer features that enhance the premium feeling on the inside rather than utility.

We Recommend

We would recommend the Premium Plus trim because it has all the basic and daily use features that you'll need with the massive 3.0L turbocharged 6-cylinder gasoline engine. This engine is sure to put a smile on your face once you step on that gas pedal.

Engine and Performance
9.1/10

The 2017 Audi Q7's performance has taken some serious improvements over the last year. It gets 2 engine options, a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder gasoline engine with 252 horses and 273 pound-feet of torque and the big 3.0L turbocharged 6-cylinder gasoline engine with 333 horses and 320 pound-feet of torque. Both the engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission which provides seamless gear changes and comfortable drive. It might not be as quick as the gearboxes of today, but it certainly gets the job done without much fuss.

The 2.0L engine feels quite adequate for the city grinds as well as for highway use. However, once the car is loaded with luggage and 7 people on board, you can feel it working harder or rather hear it working harder. The 3.0 L engine is much more refined and can overtake with a tap of the throttle with ease, even with a full house. The 2.0 L engine is no slouch in any way but offers mediocre performance. This is not all an engine fault however, as the Q7 is a mammoth weighing around 5000 pounds. Overall, the 3.0L engine certainly gets you that "big daddy" feel while the 2.0 L gets the job done.

In comparison, GLS has a great advantage over the rivals with the 3.0L engine with 362 horses and 369 pound-feet of torque. Also, it has a 9-speed transmission whilst others have 8-speed transmission. The only factor is its high price tag of $69,695 which doesn't work in its favor. The Audi Q7 is the most affordable SUV at $56,450 in this guise. On the other hand, the Porsche and the BMW X5 are dearer than Q7 and offer less power and torque output. The torque on the BMW kicks in the earliest among these cars.

What is the 2017 Audi Q7 0-60 mph Acceleration Performance?

Even with all the heavyweight and big size, the Audi Q7 is quick. The 2.0L's punch accelerated it to 60 mph in 7 seconds from a standstill and cleared the quarter-mile in 15.6 seconds. The 8-speed transmission is slick and provides optimum gear shifts. It covers up many of the engine's faults and does not leave you asking for more from it.

The 3.0 L engine manages to shoot the Q7 from a standstill to 60 MPH in just 5.7 seconds and the quarter-mile is covered in a rapid 14.8 seconds, which is even more impressive.

The Audi Q7 is the quickest car among these four, which is astounding considering its weight. Also, irrespective of the early torque on the BMW, the Q7 shoots ahead thanks to better numbers. The BMW is slower than the Audi by nearly a second. In comparison, the GLS is faster than the BMW by 0.4 seconds and the Porsche by over a second but it does not manage to come close to the exceptional performance of the Audi Q7. The Cayenne is the slowest of the lot since it produces the least amount of power and torque but it is the X5 that has the most conservative top speed.

What is the 2017 Audi Q7 Braking Performance?

Audi has made use of a large set of Brembo brake rotors which measure up as 14.8-inch on the front and 13.8-inch at the rear, and together work quite well in tandem and halts the 4,700 lbs SUV in a mere 117 feet. The brake feel is linear and progressive and although one can feel the heft of the car, the brakes provide enough confidence to make use of all the power the engine produces.

Despite being the heaviest car in this lineup, the GLS does a fair job at halting in a marginally longer distance than the Audi Q7 at 120 feet. The lightest Porsche Cayenne naturally has the shortest braking distance and that too by a considerable margin, while the X5 disappoints us as it has the longest stopping distance in this comparison.

Has the Ride and Handling of the 2017 Audi Q7 improved?

Maneuvering a heavy seven-seat SUV is never easy but surprisingly enough, the Audi Q7 feels agile and nimble for most parts and one might confuse it to be the smaller Q5 from behind the wheel. The Q7 feels sure-footed over all roads and inspires driver confidence to carry speeds even around the corners. That being said, there has been no compromise made for the ride quality for the athleticism.

The cabin is quiet as a vault even as it flattens out all the road undulations and broken patches with ease. The Adaptive air suspension provides a cushy floating ride quality that is one of the biggest selling points for the Audi Q7. Add the four-wheel steering option to that and it feels nothing like a large seven-seat SUV should feel like.

Fuel Economy
6.9/10

The Audi Q7's turbocharged 2.0L engine returns good fuel efficiency. It does 20 MPG in the city, 25 MPG on the highway, and 22 MPG combined. For a car weighing more than 2 tonnes, it does justice in this department. But it is certainly not a car for the economy-oriented buyers. For the turbo 3.0L Q7, the figures drop slightly, at 19 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway and 21 mpg combined.

In comparison, the Audi Q7 has a decent fuel economy which is only bettered by the Porsche Cayenne, by a whisker though. The Cayenne offers a slightly better economy in the city at 20 mpg, raising the combined efficiency to 22 mpg. The GLS is the least fuel-efficient but employs the largest fuel tank and hence the longest driving range amongst the cars present here. It has a combined fuel economy of 19 mpg. The BMW is slighty better than the Cayenne with its 20 mpg combined fuel returns. The range of the Audi is the second best, at 428 city miles and 563 highway miles.

Interior
8.8/10

While being a big car on the outside, the Audi Q7 is a luxurious car on the inside. Audi's fit, finish and attention to detail can be noticed all around the cabin. The wood trim and the Nougat Brown leather looks quite upmarket. All the switchgear is also made of high-quality materials and the Q7's interior is worth every penny. There is a lot of similarity between this interior and the ones seen on some Audi sedans. The entire layout is neat and clean, simple and easy to access for the driver.

Coming to the seating comfort, the seats of Q7 are one of the best in the market. The front seats are heated and get lumbar support. The rear passengers have been given more importance and the 2nd row of seats is even better. Ingress and egress are easy thanks to wide-opening doors and raised ground clearance of the SUV. The rear seats can recline which helps you relax while traveling over long journeys. The third row of seats is the only sore point as it is not suited for adults because of less knee room and sloping roof.

The elevated ride height of the car gives you a commanding view of the road ahead. The resolution display on the dashboard and the quality of the materials is excellent. The overall design is elegantly understated. The MMI screen and virtual cockpit enhance the hi-tech look of the cabin. Throughout the cabin, materials are primarily leather and metal, or metallic-finished plastic, all of which offer a substantial, quality feel. The cabin remains quiet without the use of active noise cancellation technology.

GLS easily wins in the space of the third row thanks to its massive length and width. Some of the key features in the 2017 Audi Q7 are:

All of the trim levels come with Audi's latest MMI infotainment. The menu is laid out in a very user-friendly manner and the dashboard doesn't feel cluttered. It comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto which mirror your smartphone's screen.

You also get a touchpad between front seats on which you can write addresses. If you're a music fan, you'll not be disappointed as it gets nine speakers, a subwoofer, and six channels.

  • 7.0-inch TFT color center infotainment display

How much is the 2017 Audi Q7 Cargo capacity?

The 2017 Audi Q7 gets a bump in cargo space behind the third row up to 14.8 cubic feet. Cargo space is pretty good, even when the third row is upright. However, when the first rows are up, it has 37.5 cubic feet of boot space. When you need to carry massive loads, you put down the second row and have a really humongous amount of space of 71.6 cu ft.

Exterior
8.7/10

The all-new 2017 version doesn't resemble the 2003 Pikes Peak Quattro concept which the Audi Q7 was to be based on. This time the biggest Audi is, built on Volkswagen Group's MLB Evo platform which is made with a lot of advanced technology. The new Q7 features a more wagonlike profile instead of looking like a traditional SUV. It's more of a big posh estate and offers an excellent road presence. It looks futuristic but retains the old shape of the previous-gen Q7.

The LED work in the headlights and taillights gives the car a transformer look. The indicators slide outwards in the direction of the turn which is quite savvy. All in all, it looks big on the outside which also makes it very practical inside. It offers serious chassis advancements underneath and now the SUV looks more imposing as well as sharper.

The Audi Q7 measures 199.6 inches in length and 77.5 inches in width. With a ground clearance of 8.1 inches, it can easily go over potholes and road undulations. A height of 68.5 inches provides for a good stance on the road. The massive wheelbase of 117.9 inches opens up a lot of interior space which lets the passengers sit with relaxation.

In comparison, Mercedes GLS is the longest and tallest at 202 inches and 72.8 inches respectively. Also, to be noted is the fact GLS has the largest wheelbase providing ample amount of room for passengers inside. On the other hand, the Porsche Cayenne is the widest at 79.1 inches and has the best ground clearance which is matched by the GLS. The BMW's tight dimensions make it a perfect car for the city.

Audi Q7 vs Mercedes Benz GLS 450

GLS overall is a good offering from Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 but the only problem with it is the price which is almost $20,000 more than the base Q7 and $5,000 more expensive than the top-spec Q7. It can comfortably seat 7 people, can do off-roading thanks to its air suspension but cabin quality isn't up to the mark.

It looks dated when compared to Q7's high tech interior. The ride quality is good but as you go up the trims, it gets super expensive. The price might play a big factor when choosing between these two.

Audi Q7 vs Porsche Cayenne

Volvo is an absolute stunner when you look at it but it lacks the grunt which you expect from a Porsche car, the more expensive S variant does the trick though. On the upside, the Porsche Cayenne has a phenomenal fuel economy with loads of space for all its passengers and cargo, all of which is also available with the Q7 with the addition of two more seats.

Considering the higher price point of the Cayenne, the Audi Q7 looks at the more appropriate choice and offers more value for your money.

Audi Q7 vs BMW X5 XDrive35i

The BMW X5 carries a lot of expectations from its fans but fails to live up to them in terms of practicality. Sure it is one of the most fun to drive SUVs in the segment, but it doesn’t manage to cope up with the practicality of the Q7. The Audi Q7 offers more grunt, better acceleration and braking performance, superior efficiency, and also an overall spacious cabin that can seat two more passengers on paper. To top it all off, the Audi Q7 is roughly $4,500 cheaper than the BMW.

Final Verdict

The 2017 Audi Q7 is big, bold, and luxurious. It has really good engine mills with great transmissions. The futuristic design combined with the high tech interior and safety features make it a win-win combo. The seats are spacious and comfortable with the ride quality being top-notch. Everything is solidly built, and nothing feels out of place or over the top. Price-wise, it's really a bargain! Hence it makes the 2017 Audi Q7 an even more lucrative package making it an easy recommendation.
