Overall Rating
The German automaker 4-door crossover SUV rides upon the tide of the overwhelming swarm of crossovers and goes head to head with the Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5 as well as the Jaguar F-Pace.
The BMW X3 is one of the most well-received luxury compact crossover in the segment. It boasts of great performance, top-notch interiors and a spacious cabin. For the year 2017, the X3 carries on without any major changes. The only changes for this year are limited to the infotainment system on the interior. The car is slated for complete redesign next year. However, the rivals have received significant upgrades, and this does pose a challenge to the X3's stand as the segment leader.
However, with its high reliability, top safety ratings, refined and powerful engine, roomy cabin and a feature rich environment; the X3 is very comfortable as the leader. There is not much the rival cars can do about it. Even then, this car has a few negatives. These include the cost, off-road capabilities, lack of active safety features and a hard-to-understand user interface.
For all-weather capability, we recommend going with the xDrive model as the AWD system is quite capable and can power through the SUV from the roughest of the terrains. 28i trim should do the trick as the 2.0L four-cylinder engine is plenty powerful for basic needs.

We Recommend
For all-weather capability, we recommend going with the xDrive model as the AWD system is quite capable and can power through the SUV from the roughest of the terrains. 28i trim should do the trick as the 2.0L four-cylinder engine is plenty powerful for basic needs.
The 2017 X3 features different engines that will probably give as much power as you would require, which is the situation with most vehicles in this class. The standard offering is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine that puts out 240 horsepower, available on the sDrive28i and the xDrive28i trims.
With this engine, speeding up from a halt is snappy. At thruway speeds, the X3 remains solid and can perform overtaking maneuvers easily. The xDrive35i trim is powered by a turbocharged 3.0L I-6 engine that puts out 300 hp and 300 lb.-ft of torque. All the X3 trims are coupled to a 8-speed automatic gearbox.

The BMW X3 makse the least power and torque figures among the competition. It is, however the cheapest among these four and offers the best value proposition. The rival cars also sport 2.0L turbocharged engines. The Mercedes makes the most power, whereas the most torque output is given by the Audi. However, its the Jaguar's torque tha kicks in the earliest among these four cars. The Jaguar is also the most expensive offering here.
The X3 consents when you need to move, requiring just 5.8 seconds to hit 0-60 mph. However, among the freshest yield of smaller sporty SUVs; it is at the base of the pack. Movements are fresh and quick at full throttle, and the 240-horsepower engine pulls hard from low speeds. The 3.0L trim of the X3 takes 5.5 seconds only to mark the 0-60 mph run.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC is the quickest car of the segment and takes just 5.8 seconds to sway to the 0-60 mph mark, same as the BMW. The Audi Q5 is next with its slightly slower acceleration of 5.9 sceonds. The Jaguar F-Pace is the slowest of them all, taking 6.6 seconds to hit the 60 mph mark. In the quarter-mile drag, its again the X3 that takes the lead with its 13.1 seconds time. The Mercedes and the Audi take 14.5 seconds and 14.6 seconds respectively. The F-Pace is the slowest among them. The GLC records the highes top-speed as well.
The X3 is a good vehicle, but the handling and steering characteristics are a let down. Without the dynamic handling options, this X3 is a hit-and-miss at the curves. There is body roll as well, and this does not inspire confidence in one. It can even now be driven with direct energy and hold its level-headedness, yet with its all-season run-punctured tires, this BMW SUV inclines more "utility" than "sport". The X3's steering is light and direct, with less feedback. The steering assist feels unnatural as the wheel does not come to the center as it should. This is not expected from BMW cars.
This makes a dubious on-focus feel and requires more push to keep up a smooth circular segment through any street with a level of twist, an odd deficit for BMW. The ride quality is very much adjusted with simply enough solidness for a propelled feel without bringing about a harsh ride over uneven street surfaces.
The X3 brake pedal feels disappointingly squishy at first but firms up nicely after the initial travel and becomes confident underfoot. Its stopping distance at 122 feet from 60 mph is comparable to others in the class with all-season tires. But Jaguar F-Pace S shows better starts despite having smaller brake pads. Mercedes-Benz GLC 43 achieves the tag of topper here as well, taking 115 ft. (least in the segment) to come to halt.

The Jaguar F-Pace turns out to be the heaviest of all the models and also the SUV with the small brakes in both front and rear. The Mercedes-Benz has the largest brakes at the front, but the Audi Q5 outperforms all the SUVs in the stopping distance even if it does not have the largest brake. Sadly the BMW X3 comes in the last position with a stopping distance of 122ft which is not good.
All X3 models are matched to an 8-speed automatic that helps wring mileage from the turbocharged engines. All models in the lineup are additionally outfitted with a stop-start technology that closes off the engine at stoplights to monitor fuel consumption. The X3 offers a combined fuel efficiency of 24 mpg. This efficiency drops down to 21 mpg combined on the 3 L trim.

Surpisingly, all the three rival cars also offer the same combined efficiency at 24 mpg. The Q5 and the F-Pace offer the best city mileage at 22 mpg, whereas the Mercedes offers the most highway mileage at 28 mpg. The Jaguar offers the most fuel capacity at 21 gallons, and this will help the F-Pace offer the most range among the four cars.
The X3 scores well with regards to pleasing drivers with accessibility, comfort, and making it simple to move in and out. There's a decent measure of room accessible front and back, however, some could discover the lower tallness of the back seat off-putting. The new iDrive framework is stage back. Inside, the dash bends to skew controls and points toward the driver, which keeps the driver's attention focussed on the road. The dash has been fitted with all the more soft-touch materials, and everything from the center of the doors on up is pleasantly grained leather.
The X3 is a mixed bag with regards to comfort. The atmosphere control framework works well, and the cabin sound deadening does a great job of protecting against wind and street noise. Be that as it may, its bustling ride quality is a genuine weakness. The X3 is never again the smoothest in the segment; that award goes to the Mercedes-Benz GLC. Light undulations and street bumps are completely absorbed, yet bigger knocks are still felt in the cabin despite the softest settings on the dampers.

The front seat cushions feel somewhat flat and firm. Be that as it may, the thick cushioning on the armrest is welcome, and the material is acceptable. The back seats sit nearer to the floor and may trade off room for long-legged travelers. Some of the interior features in the 2017 BMW X3 are:
Some rival cars offer desirable tech features that you can't get in the X3. In the Audi Q5, the navigation system uses Google Earth satellite photos. The Q5 can also be equipped with a Wi-Fi hot spot, as can the Mercedes-Benz GLC.
While the X3's infotainment system has sharp graphics and quick responses, it can't match the Jaguar F-Pace's optional InControl Touch Pro infotainment system. It has a 10.2-inch touch screen and feels like a tablet when you use it. It has a well-equipped infotainment system which includes the following key features:
The X3's back seats are anything but difficult to fold forward and lie flat for a smooth cargo bay floor. With 27.6 cubic feet of room behind the back seats, and 63.3 cubic feet with them collapsed, the X3 offers a helpful measure of utility for its class.

The X3's cargo space is average for the luxury compact SUV class. Additionally, a 40/20/40 split-folding back row and a power rear liftgate are standard. However, the X3 offers the most cargo space among the four cars, at 63 cubic feet. The GLC;s cargo space is below average by compact SUV standards, at 19 cubic feet.
The X3's exterior is among the most handsome exteriors you can see on in this segment. It is a SUV, with a more prominent sedan-ish design and styling. A lot on the X3's exterior reminds us of the X5, especially in the rear section. The redesign it got a few years ago, has made the car look more graceful and lean. The circular headlamps, the kidney grille and the minor changes bring the X3 a lot closer to BMW's sedan styling. The front is not too tall, and the roof is sculpted well into the rear. A thick line runs along the side, and merges into the rear of the car.
The BMW X3 is a departure from the boxy SUVs and crossovers that BMW is used to making. The muscular curves on X3 create an imposing street presence as the X3 sits wide and low on the tarmac. It weighs less than the competitors but also has a slightly lesser ground clearance.

The BMW X3 is an exceptionally tall crossover and has lesser curb weight as well, wheelbase is among the shortest in the segment, but still, this car fairly lags when it comes to length and width. The Jaguar F-Pace S is the ideal car in terms of dimensions. Ground clearance is average. Some of the key exterior features in the 2017 BMW X3 are:
There are no advanced safety features that come standard in the X3, but many are available as part of a package. These features include a rearview camera, park distance control, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, automatic braking, and adaptive cruise control. You can also opt for a 360-degree surround-view display and speed limit information displayed in the gauge cluster. There are many other safety features in the new BMW X3 as well:
While both cars have a range of potent engines; they both have nimble handling that sacrifices some ride comfort; and they both have roomy, high-end cabins. There's more cargo room in the X3, whether you have the rear seats up or folded down. The X3 has better fuel economy estimates than the Q5, as well. Like the X3, the Audi Q5 has athletic handling and a solid lineup of powerful engines.
The Q5, however, has more standard features, including Apple CarPlay and leather upholstery. The BMW is the better car in terms of safety as well as reliability. Also, the X3 is much cheaper than the Q5.
The Jaguar F-Pace and the BMW X3 have similar athletic handling, but the F-Pace has a more cushioned ride. While the X3's base engine is fuel-efficient, the F-Pace comes standard with a turbo-diesel that sips less fuel but still fails to overpower X3. There are more cargo and passenger room inside the F-Pace, so you'll have generous space for the whole family and their luggage to go on a road trip.
The F-Pace also has a larger touchscreen infotainment system that puts the X3's iDrive to shame. On the other side, the X3 is cheaper, and better in terms of reliability and ownership.
Drivers who care more about interior comfort and luxury than corner-carving performance might find the right fit in the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class. While the GLC may not have quite as much room for your family or their luggage as the X3. The GLC has a long list of standard advanced driver assistance features that are extra-cost options in the X3. Like the X3, the GLC comes standard with synthetic leather upholstery.
However, the GLC also offers luxurious amenities that you can't get in the X3, such as cabin fragrance and air purification systems. Though the GLC has less cargo space and is less athletic than X3, its compliant ride, powerful engines, and lower price tag still make it the better choice.
A blend of utility, extravagance, and execution make the BMW X3 a skilled daily driver that can satisfy almost any obligation. In the engine, BMW offers a selection of engines extending from a fuel-productive and enthusiastic turbocharged four-cylinder to a sturdy turbocharged six-cylinder. You'll journey around town effortlessly, and appreciate energetic taking care of with coordinate steering around corners. Travelers will discover adequate space wherever they sit, and the rearward sitting arrangement specifically brags a lot of legroom. You can likewise effectively stack up the cargo zone with your family's things for a trek. Notwithstanding a roomy lodge, the X3 features a quality inside also.
