About 2017 Buick Encore

4.1

Overall Rating

The 2017 Buick Encore SUV embodies many elements of the traditional Buick and has been fitted with a hushed cabin, near-luxury trim, and a long list of upscale features that make it stand out.

The 2017 Buick Encore SUV embodies many elements of a traditional Buick vehicle and comes with a silent cabin, a compliant ride quality, plush interior trim, and a long list of standard upscale features that make it stand out in the crowded segment. The latest model of the Encore flaunts a new infotainment interface that complements the instrument panel graciously along with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

The SUV also gets a full exterior and interior design upgrade as well for the current model year. However, the SUV retains its standard turbo four-cylinder powerplant from the previous model year. Buick priced the Encore with a starting MSRP of $22,990, bringing it into competition with the Mazda CX-3, Chevrolet Trax, and the Fiat 500X Pop.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The Buick Encore comes in a total of six trim levels and two drivetrain options. The base variant is priced at $22,990 and includes a generous list of standard features to keep you from opting for the higher trims. But if you do desire some extra techs and are willing to pay for them, the higher trims will suffice most of your needs. Some of the premium features such as Bose Audio with amplifiers, Park Assist, heated steering wheel among others will make your experience wholesome. The powertrain option will remain the same regardless of the trim level.

Engine and Performance
7.7/10

The 2017 Buick Encore specs suggest that irrespective of the trim level, all the Encore SUVs are equipped with a Turbocharged EcoTec 1.4 liter inline-4 engine capable of generating a decent 138-horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. There is an optional engine, a turbocharged inline-4 making 153hp and it offers a considerable bump in the overall performance of the vehicle. Both engines are paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission, which will direct all the power to the front wheels or all the wheels depending on the drivetrain you select.

The refinement levels of the motor are more than just decent and the turbo-lag is almost negligible. Even when the SUV is fully loaded, the performance remains mostly intact. Under hard acceleration, the motor gets slightly vocal but quickly settles down once the vehicle has picked up the pace. The motor packs in enough grunt to move around the city effortlessly and cruise along the freeways without any hassle.

Coming to the competitors, the most powerful one is the Fiat 500X making 160 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. Then comes the Mazda CX-3 making 146 hp, followed by the two GM brand’s similar offerings, the Buick Encore and the Chevrolet Trax, both making 138 hp. When it comes to torque comparison, again Fiat takes the lead with 184 lb-ft. It is safe to say that the Encore is at par with its segment rivals.

Acceleration

Considering the fact that the 2017 Buick Encore generates a humble 138 horsepower from its 1.4-liter motor, we do not expect something extraordinary but the SUV is not entirely a slouch considering its price and specs.

The SUV does the 0-60 mph sprint in 8.5 seconds, the standing quarter-mile in 16.6 seconds, and will achieve a top speed of 120 mph. The numbers are decent enough for a daily driver but making those quick overtakes will take longer than expected.

This is closely followed by the Buick Encore and the Fiat 500X, both setting a time of 8.5 seconds, and then comes the Chevrolet Trax with a time of 9.3 seconds. In quarter-mile timings, again Mazda takes the crown for being the quickest one by completing it in 16.4 seconds.

Ride and Handling

As expected from a Buick car, the Encore is very much in line with the other models of the brand. The 2017 Buick Encore offers one of the most silent cabins in the segment that have been loaded with extensive sound-absorbing materials and active noise-cancellation technology. The suspension is well-tuned and absorbs almost every imperfection on the road. The slightly softer suspension setup however results in lethargic handling and a bit of pronounced body roll while taking sharp corners at higher speeds. Overall, the ride and handling aspect of the SUV is at par with its rivals.

Braking

The 2017 Buick Encore is equipped with four-wheel disc brakes measuring 11.8 inch-rotors on the front and 10.6-inch rotors in the rear. The brakes are capable of bringing the SUV from 60 mph to a halt in 119 feet. The brakes also have the feature of ABS, which does help the driver to feel a bit more confident under hard and panic braking situations.

Interior
7.8/10

The Buick Encore can seat 5 occupants comfortably in the cabin across the two rows. The seats are comfortable and the front row seats are positioned in a manner that you are seated slightly higher, giving you an SUV-ish ride height. The front seats have a 6-way power driver seat and a 2-way power front passenger seat. As you go higher up in the trims, the front passenger seat gets a 6-way power adjustment function.

As options, there are features like leather upholstery, heated front seats, driver’s seat memory setting, leather heated steering wheel and a few more options. Exterior
8.3/10

Unlike its interior, the exterior of the 2017 Buick Encore isn't that appealing but for an affordable compact SUV, it is okay, to say the least. The SUV does have some compact exterior dimensions though, making it a great city vehicle. The sheet metal of the Encore isn't enough to stretch out its usual styling themes as gracefully as you'll find in any other SUVs. This year the front of the car features a new grille and a chrome strip with a wing shape losing the previous waterfall bars making it look more attractive.

The lower air intakes of the vehicle are slightly smaller and also come with upgraded LED fog lamps. The SUV rides on 18” wheels, which change designs as per the trim you select. There is a 16” spare wheel located under the cargo floor.

Mazda CX-3 SUV Vs Buick Encore SUV

The Mazda CX-3 can be called the best example of an all-rounder vehicle in its class as this compact SUV boasts a peppy engine and superb responsive handling. You'll be impressed with its ride quality. The car has been embedded with high-quality materials and comfortable front seats along with maximum rear-seat space. Also, the Mazda would cost you $3,000 less than the Buick, and it can be a good choice for you if you are looking for a car with a sporty driving experience.

Chevrolet Trax SUV Vs Buick Encore SUV

The Trax by Chevrolet is basically a moderately expensive and less upscale version of the Buick Encore. Both the compact SUVs share a similar base engine and the same fuel economy. But the Buick stands out with its nicer cabin and a bunch of essential standard features. The Trax doesn't provide an optional engine like the Encore for buyers who are looking for more power in this range. Encore not only delivers better ride quality than the Chevrolet Trax but is also rich in luxury.

Fiat 500X Vs Buick Encore

The 2017 Fiat 500X Pop is quite distinctive and flaunts a well-made cabin with easy-to-use tech controls. The SUV is also reasonably priced compared to its expensive peers. It also offers some safety features, which are very rare in its class. Although it does lose out to cargo volume, mpg figures, and more interior space in the back to the Buick, making the Buick a better option.

Final Verdict

The 2017 Buick Encore boasts one of the best interiors in its class along with securing top-notch predicted reliability ratings as well as safety ratings. Its performance may lack the wow factor, but this compact SUV has a decently capable engine and an excellent ride quality to offer which makes it an almost perfect city cruiser. With a good list of standard features, the Buick Encore may not be the perfect upscale SUV, but it is certainly a good car for everyday commuting.
