About 2017 Chevrolet Trax

3.8

Overall Rating

2017 Chevrolet Trax is powered by a 1.4 Liter turbocharged engine that produces 138 horsepower and 148 lb-ft. of torque. Pricing for the Chevy Trax starts at $21,000 for the base trim.

The Chevrolet Trax was introduced in 2015. This small crossover did not appeal much when placed against some other leading subcompact crossovers, but in this short duration, this new Chevy has gained a reputation for being an efficient and robust crossover vehicle. The Trax is a wise choice for people looking for something similar to the Eqiunox: its a much affordable Equinox. The 2017 Chevrolet Trax comes without any major mechanical changes.

This update on the Trax is instantly noticed right from the exterior and its much more appealing now. The interiors received refresh that make them feel much better in quality and standard now. The feature list has improved and now sits closer to today's necessities and requirements. Its simple, easy-to-drive and quick to maneuver. This upgrade is probably what the Trax needed, after all.

Since all the trims have same engine performance and offer a choice between FWD and AWD, our vote goes to the LT trim. For owning the LT trim of Chevrolet Trax, one needs to pay an additional sum of $1,900 over the LX trim but it will offer some exciting features such as cruise control and LED DRLs. However, in comparison with the Premier trim, the LT trim costs almost $3200 less.

2017 Chevrolet Trax Review

Pros

  • Good-looking interiors

  • Requires less parking space due to its compact size
  • Remarkable safety features

Cons

  • Not very powerful
  • Storage space is low for a crossover

2017 Chevrolet Trax is powered by a 1.4 Liter turbocharged engine that produces 138 horsepower and 148 lb-ft. of torque. Pricing for the Chevy Trax starts at $21,000 for the base trim.

Overview

The Chevrolet Trax was introduced in 2015. The feature list has improved and now sits closer to today's necessities and requirements. Its simple, easy-to-drive and quick to maneuver. This upgrade is probably what the Trax needed, after all.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

Looking at the trims of the 2017 Chevrolet Trax crossover, we see that we are given the choice of three trims. The LS is the base trim, the LT is the mid-spec trim while the Premier is the top trim. One of the best things that Chevy has offered in all the trims of Trax is the option of having either a FWD or an AWD drivetrain. In terms of price, all the AWD variants are $1500 more expensive compared to their FWD counterparts. Standard equipment on all trims includes full power accessories, A/C, tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, 60/40-split folding rear seat and automatic headlights.

The LX trim of 2017 Chevrolet Trax crossover is priced at $21,000. Standard features offered in this trim include halogen reflector headlamps, electronic stability control, rear-vision camera, infotainment system with the 7-inch display screen. The LT trim, priced at $22,900 comes with features such as LED DRLs, projector headlamps, roof rack side rails, a 110-volt power outlet, cruise control and deluxe cloth seats. At $26,100, the Premium is the high-end trim of the Trax crossover and provides 18-inch aluminum wheels, and premium Bose-audio system with 7 speakers, heated front seats and leather-wrapped steering wheel.

We Recommend

Since all the trims have the same engine performance and offer a choice between FWD and AWD, our vote goes to the LT trim. For owning the LT trim of Chevrolet Trax, one needs to pay an additional sum of $1,900 over the LX trim but it will offer some exciting features such as cruise control and LED DRLs. However, in comparison with the Premier trim, the LT trim costs almost $3200 less.

Engine and Performance
7.1/10

At the heart of the Chevrolet Trax crossover is a 1.4-Liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, which churns out 138 hp while delivering 148 lbs.-ft. of torque. The crossover employs a 6-speed automatic transmission for channelizing the engine power to its drivetrain.

Models Chevrolet Trax Fiat 500X Mazda CX-3 crossover Buick Encore

Torque 148 lb-ft @1850 rpm 184 lb-ft @2500 rpm 146 lb-ft @2800 rpm 148 lb-ft @1850 rpm

Amidst the rivals, the Fiat 500X offers both the highest power and torque of 160 hp and 154 lbs.-ft. respectively. Coming to the Mazda CX-3 crossover, it has the largest engine displacement (2.0 Liter) amidst the competition, but its power is just 8 hp more than the Chevy Trax. However, both the Trax as well as the Encore benefit from the low-end peak torque that kicks in a little late on the other two cars. The Buick is the most expensive among these four, but it offers the most premium interior.

Acceleration

The acceleration of the Chevy Trax is not extraordinary. In fact, its 0-60 mph time is 9.3 seconds and quarter-mile time is 17.2 seconds. This is slower than most of the subcompact crossovers, barring a few. The 1.4 Liter engine is able to summon its peak torque output at a mere 1850 rpm. This makes the Trax a peppy vehicle for city driving.

Models Chevrolet Trax crossover Fiat 500X Mazda CX-3 crossover Buick Encore

The Buick Encore is the fastest crossover among the four. It completes its 0-60 mph run under 7.8 seconds. The Mazda CX-3 and the Fiat 500X take the same time to complete the 0-60 mph run, at 8.5 seconds.  However, the Mazda CX-3 is much quicker in the quarter-mile drag. The Mazda CX-3 is the most eco-friendly vehicle with the least in segment emission statistics, whereas the Chevrolet Trax's engine does leave out a lot of pollution. Its surprising that even though the Buick shares the same engine with the Chevy, its much more eco-friendly.

Ride and Handling

When it comes to handling, the Chevy Trax isn’t much fun. The Trax is offered with a simplistic suspension – MacPherson strut front and rear torsion-beam. This setup is able to absorb most of the road undulations fairly well. The electric power steering system has been set up with a good-on center feel and the steering effort weighs up as the speed increase. Coupled with the quick and smooth 6-speed transmission, the Trax is easier to filter around in the city and to park as well.

The ride quality of the Chevy Trax is excellent at a lower speed. The 16-inch wheels on the lower trims do make the ride quality better, but the 18-inch destroy whatever ride comfort you can have. The throttle response for the Chevrolet Trax is satisfactory at lower revs but it becomes dull as the revs climb up. Trax’s all-wheel-drive system hasn’t been tuned for off-roading but it provides decent traction to tackle wet conditions.

Braking

In emergency braking scenarios, the Chevrolet Trax comes at a halt from 60 mph after covering a distance of 119 ft. It has brake rotors that measure 11.8 inches up front and the same at the rear. This is pretty adequate to bring the car to a stop with its 2805 lbs weight which is relatively light.

Curb Weight (lbs.) 2805 2967 2809 3237
60-0 MPH (ft.) 119 123 117 119

If we look at the other crossovers in the competition, only the Mazda CX-3 has a better 60-0 mph deceleration (117 feet) while the Fiat 500X’s 123 feet the worst in the segment. That and the 500X's weight can be something to be worried about. The Buick is exactly on par with the Trax with the same stopping distance of 119 feet. The Buick's performance is commendable as its around 500 pounds heavier than the Trax.

Fuel Economy
6.2/10

The Chevrolet Trax crossover offers 25 MPG in city, 33 MPG while cruising on highways and this gives a combined economy of 28 MPG. These are decent figures and definitely works for the car's frugal appeal. With a class leading fuel tank capacity of 14 gallons, the Trax has a decent range as well.

Fiat’s 500X and Buick’s Encore have fuel efficiency figures exactly similar to the Chevrolet’s Trax, at 28 mpg combined. However, the Mazda CX-3 is the most fuel-efficient car among the rivalry with 29 MPG city mileage, 34 MPG highway mileage and 31 MPG as combined. In terms of range, the Trax and Encore lead even with a range of 350 city miles and 462 highway miles. The Mazda's range is slighty lower than the Trax's. The 500X offers the least range among these four.

Exterior
6.9/10

Although the Trax's exterior has got a redesign, its not as appealing as it can be. The front now features a look similar to the eye on different Chevrolet vehicles, in terms of the fiasca, the grille and the headlights. The front has a sharp but geometric design to it. Quadrilaterals, Pentagon, Hexagon are all seen on the front. Even the headlamps have a rectangular-ish design. The side is simpe: wheel arches, a shoulder line, body colouured mirrors  and a slant roofline. The rear now potrays an updated fiasca and a dual light setup, but it didnt appeal to us here at Carindigo.

Talking about the proportions of the Trax, its length, width, and height are 167.6 inches, 69.9 inches and 64.8 inches respectively. The 2017 Chevrolet Trax crossover offers a pretty good ground clearance of 6.2 inches. Among all the crossovers under comparison, the Buick Encore is longest and tallest at length of 168.41 inches and height of 65.26 inches. On the other hand, the Fiat 500X is widest with its 70.7 inches width. Checking out the wheelbase length, both the Fiat 500 X and the Mazda CX-3 offer a wheelbase of 101.2 inches. Competition
7.0/10

Chevrolet Trax vs Fiat 500X

With a price tag of $19,995, the Fiat 500X comes $1000 cheaper than the base trim of the 2017 Chevrolet Trax crossover. However, its engine power and torque figure exceed than that of the Trax’s engine by a good margin. Additionally, the Fiat 500X has better specs than the Trax in terms of acceleration, emissions, and front shoulder room.

The 500X looks are debateable, but in our books the Chevy looks better. The Chevy offers many more features than the 500X. Also the Chevy's rear seating has a little more space than the 500X's. The Chevy has a 5-star rating whereas the 500X has not yet been rated.

Chevrolet Trax vs Mazda CX-3 Crossover

The Mazda CX-3 is another strong opponent of the Chevrolet Trax and comes at a price of $19,960. The CX-3 is superior to the Trax in terms of engine power, 0-60 mph acceleration, 60-0 mph deceleration and fuel economy. However, its cargo volume and overall interior space are not as good as Chevrolet’s Trax.

The Chevy offers more featurse than the CX-3. Apart from that and the Chevrolet brand, the car does not fare well against the CX-3. Also, the CX-3's interior is more upmarket than the Trax's.

Chevrolet Trax vs Buick Encore

Despite having exceeding MSRP than the Chevrolet Trax, most of the Buick Encore offerings are similar to that of the Trax including torque and power, braking capability, mileage and cargo capacity. However, the Encore serves better acceleration and lesser emissions than that of the Chevrolet Trax crossover.

The Encore's got better brakes and a much linear power delivery. Also, despite having the same underpinnings, the Encore's interior is more premium and attractive. The space on the inside is a lot by crossover stands  and its super premium and posh.

Final Verdict

The Chevy Trax is powered by a 1.4 Liter, 4-cylinder engine that churns out 138 horsepower. Yes, that isn’t much but it the engine has enough grunt to take care of “commuting” needs. It wouldn’t be unwise to say that this Chevy is a value for money car. Moreover, it offers a plethora of choice with its trims and drivetrain option, which makes it easy for customers to buy the version of the car which caters most to their personal needs. There are some shortcomings of the Trax such as lack-luster high gear acceleration, greater emissions, and an average cargo capacity. But look beyond that and the Chevy Trax offers a robust build, standard safety features and an optional all-wheel-drive feature on all the trims.
