The Chevrolet Volt is a plug-in hybrid, sales of which began in 2011. The car was awarded on many fronts and was also the world’s highest-selling plug-in hybrid vehicle as recorded till December of 2016. In 2017,Chevrolet is looking forward to continuing its dominance over the plug-in hybrid market. Powered by a 1.5L gasoline and a range extender assembly, the Volt combines the services of the two to provide an output of 149 horsepower and 294 lb.-ft of torque.

The Volt has been quite intelligently categorized. Although there is not much to choose from, the two trims it is offered in can leave you bewildered with the differences they pose. While the LT encompasses a rigid approach, it still features many modern amenities. On the other hand, the Premier is the one that utilizes more state-of-the-art technologies and has an upper hand in comfort and optional safety aids. Nonetheless, we would still advise you to opt for the LT trim as the features added do not serve appropriate justice to the cost contrast.

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The Chevrolet Volt is offered in two trim variants, LT being the entry-level while Premier is the top model. Mechanically and physically, both the trim levels are built on the same platform, while the only changes or additional features that Premier has over the LT is the premium interior comfort and convenience system. LT comes at a price of $34,095, while the Premier goes up to $38,445.

Engine and Performance
8.1/10

Considering the Volt's eco-friendly mission and its thriftiness on fuel, it performs admirably. The 2017 Volt feels willing and able in just about every situation, and it's one of the smoothest-driving plug-in hybrid vehicles out there.

It is being offered only in a single-engine option, which is the hybrid combination of the all-electric motor with the 1.5L 4-cyl petrol engine, having a combined output of 149 horsepower and 294 lb.-ft of torque. The engine is further mated to a CVT transmission.

The BMW i3 is the only car of the lot which is driven completely on an electric motor and quite visibly has the strongest off-the-line response numbers, followed by the Volt which is heavier on the torque conventional side. Toyota Prius takes the last spot in terms of performance. As can be seen, chevrolet outperforms the rivals easily in the torque department by offering 294 lb-ft.

Acceleration

The hybrid engine manages to pull off a decent amount of results, praise to the Chevrolet engineering. The Volt is quick off-the-line and does a 0-60 mph in under 8 seconds and when stretched to a quarter-mile, it completes the lap in just under 16 seconds. Thanks to the all-electric motor in the hybrid engine, the emission is down to 1.3 tons/yr.

BMW is the only one with the sole electric motor engine and is the quickest of all and well with absolutely zero emissions. But when we draw a contrast between the hybrids, the Chevy comes out on top with the least emission scale while Toyota takes the last spot in every aspect.

Ride and Handling

The Volt is an eco-friendly car, and with an eagerness to exude athleticism, it is a well-balanced vehicle with just about the right amount of thrill. The suspensions and the dampening are well put through but going hard on the throttle could put the tires off. The drive experience is smooth, and the steering is pretty confident and accurate. As far as the braking is concerned, it lags at the first stance but then the firm grip succumbs.

While on the curves, it steers with unprecedented confidence and directness that makes it easy for the driver to guide the car around turns and through corners. The effort is generally good, but it can feel a bit "thick" and indistinct around the center when cruising straight. The Volt exhibits good coordination and even a bit of playfulness on winding roads. Don't push it too hard, though.

Braking

The Chevrolet Volt comes standard with the 10.8-inch and 10-inch brake pad set up at the front and the rear wheels of the vehicle, respectively. After almost weighing around 3.5 tons or exactly 3,543 lbs, it manages to complete the panic stop from 60 mph to a dead stop at a considerable 120 ft.

Amongst its competitors. Volt stands the heaviest by weight. And even though the i3 has the biggest braking system, the Chevrolet still manages to outperform every other when put to the panic test as it results to be the quickest to stop. Despite being the lightest of the lot, BMW takes the most distance of 125 ft to reach a halt from 60 mph.

Fuel Economy
9.1/10

Packed with a sense of thriftiness, the Volt PHEV’s scintillating combo of the 1.5L gasoline and an 18.4 kWh battery enables you to travel at a mileage of 42 MPG in the urban establishments while the same travels only a mile more per gallon on the open roads. Although this may seem a gig in front of conventional powertrains, the Volt has got a lot to achieve among its own kin.

Quite understandably the i3 has the bolstered 118 mpg as it runs completely on an electric motor, but when the hybrids are put together, the Hyundai Ioniq takes it by charm, while it is followed by the Toyota Prius and then the Chevrolet Volt, at last with 58, 52, and 42 mph, respectively.

Interior
6.0/10

The Chevrolet Volt is a 5-seater hatchback where the front seats of the car are found to be pretty comfortable even for long durations. The rear seats are quite spacious, but the middle seat could be quite unusable sometimes for grownups. The front seats are fairly comfortable and nicely contoured, but the rear seats are short on legroom.

When the spaciousness is concerned, the Chevy certainly comes at the last spot while the Hyundai Ioniq and Toyota Prius top up at almost identical space features. BMW is the only vehicle on the table which offers seating for four people, while all other cars offer seating for five people.

Infotainment System

Every Volt comes with an 8-inch touchscreen with the MyLink interface. The graphics are sharp, and the menus are easy to understand. Factory navigation comes standard on the Premier. You also get the upgraded Bose audio system. The sound quality is better and more enjoyable than with most base systems. The 2017 Volt has the following features to offer with its 8"-touchscreen entertainment system:

  • AM/FM Radio
  • SiriusXM Satellite
  • USB/Bluetooth connectivity
  • 6-speaker sound system
  • 8-speaker Bose system (optional)
  • Real-time navigation
  • AUX input
  • Steering mounted controls

Cargo Capacity

The cargo capacity is said to be quite compromised with the Volt and thus only 10.6 cubic feet of space is made available, which is quite an issue. The trunk, at 10.6 cubic feet, is modestly sized; fitting golf bags is problematic. The provided security cover is chintzy, too. Still, the hatchback design gives you a bigger portal to load luggage compared to the typical small sedan, and the 60/40-split seat back folds down.

In comparison, Hyundai Ioniq takes the lead by offering 26.5 cubic feet of cargo space, followed by Toyota’s 24.6 cubic feet. BMW i3 takes the third position on the table as it only manage to provide a cargo space of 15.1 cubic feet, leaving Chevrolet at the back.

Exterior
8.0/10

In a hatchback segment, the Volt is about 180-inches long, 71-inches wide, and 56-inches tall. It has been assigned a ground clearance of 5.5-inches and a wheelbase of 106-inches. Looking into the track width, the Volt is quite bigger from the rear than the front side of it.

Apparently, someone in Chevy design decided it would be a good idea for their flagship EV to NOT look dopey. Good call, we say, as the 2017 Volt is maybe the first alternative-fuel vehicle that people will buy simply because they fell in love with its appearance.

Identical enough, the Volt is the biggest and the bulkiest of all but it loses out on the wideness just to the Hyundai Ioniq while the BMW i3 stands the tallest. The 2017 Chevrolet Volt Hatchback comes standard with the following exterior features:

  • LED Headlamps and Taillamps
  • LED DRLs (Daylight Running Light)
  • 17" 5-spoke colored aluminum wheels
  • Keyless entry
  • Remote ignition
  • Range extender engine (optional)

Safety
9.9/10

Chevrolet has had first-hand safety for a long time. Now with the partially electric powertrain in the house, it has all the room for the best-in-class safety features. Despite this fact, the restriction of price has been making things difficult for the brand. Hence, most of the fancy safety kit is reserved for the Premier trim. Nevertheless, the LT trim also comes with some essential active and passive safety features like:

  • StabiliTrak electronic stability control system
  • LED Daytime Running Lamps
  • Airbag, Passenger Sensing System sensor indicator inflatable restraint, front passenger/child presence detector
  • Airbags, dual-stage frontal, driver and right-front passenger includes Passenger Sensing System
  • Airbags, thorax side-impact seat-mounted, side-front outboard seating positions
  • Pedestrian Safety Signal
  • Child security rear door and window locks
  • LATCH System
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Chevrolet Volt PHEV vs Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid

The 2017Hyundai Ioniq offers good in-class mileage numbers, gives ample interior space, and has just the right amount of plushness, but it certainly lacks the necessary power for a good amount of acceleration.

The sound insulation is also a considerable problem with this vehicle, making Chevrolet a better option between the two.

Chevrolet Volt PHEV vs Toyota Prius Hybrid

Having the best in class mileage and good isolation of outside noise, this is a good option to be driven around. Maneuvering and handling are also very confident in this very car but the engine lacks the response one would expect from a vehicle of this segment. The interiors of the car also are a bit tacky and might not live up to some expectations.

Chevrolet Volt PHEV vs BMW i3

The most hand-crafted interiors and exteriors amongst the lot, this is one of the exceptional looking cars. The only electric motor-driven car, it gives unbelievable fuel economy.

The size and the price tag of theBMW i3 are the cons for this very car. A price difference of almost $10k is a lot for a car of this segment.

Final Verdict

Having a strongly built engine and being features loaded, it is certainly a car to be considered as a driver's car. It performs remarkably well in safety tests as well. Even though the mileage and the back seats are some compromises with the car, still the money invested is still worth it. The acceleration and performance are this car's forte along with strong and confident handling. The 2017Chevrolet Volt PHEV is set to deliver a good amount of returns on the money invested in it and the disappointment associated with the same could easily be ignored.
