We recommend

We recommend getting the GTC trim, it gets the same engine and performance but adds on a few good features for the exterior, especially the Time Attack package, and even the extreme aero package, which help boost the aerodynamics and performance around the racetrack. For us, the GTC trim brings the best package in the lineup.

Engine and Performance
8.1/10

All trims of the Dodge Viper coupes get an 8.5-liter V10 engine making 645 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque. This big and powerful engine is paired to a 6-speed manual transmission, which directs all the power to the rear wheels.

The price of Dodge is way higher than what Chevy asks for its Corvette Grand Sport.

The most powerful of the above cars are the Dodge Viper SRT, making 645hp. Following this is the Chevrolet Corvette making 460hp, and then comes the Porsche 911 Carrera making 370hp, the least of the above cars. In torque figures, again Dodge is way ahead of its rivals with class leading figure of 600 lb-ft.

Acceleration

A big and powerful engine helps the Dodge Viper SRT get a 0 to 60mph time of 3.5 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 11.5 seconds. The Dodge Viper SRT performance changes according to the trim the GTS, GTS, and GT set a 0-60 of 3.4 seconds. However, the Viper ACR sets a 0-60 of 3.3 seconds. All trims set a quarter-mile time of 11.5 seconds. All trims other than the ACR have a top speed of 206 mph, whereas the ACR has a top speed of 177 mph.

The fastest 0-60 sprint is set by the Dodge Viper SRT with a time of 3.5 seconds. Then comes the Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport with a time of 3.8 seconds followed by the Porsche 911 Carrera with a time of 4.4 seconds. In the standing quarter-mile, the same order is maintained.

Ride and Handling

At regular speeds, the Dodge Viper SRT handles itself like any other sports car, but due to its size, it is a bit difficult at first but then you get used to it. When you put your foot down, the handling changes a bit, everything is sharper, that is also because you have to change the drive mode on the car, and then things turn fun - a lot of fun.

If you want a proper race car experience, it is best if you get the ACR as it makes you feel like a race car driver. In regular driving, the ride is comfortable, but every time you go over a bump, you will feel it a bit, and it might get a bit annoying.

Braking

The Viper SRT comes with 14-inch front and 14-inch rear rotors which are vented. The GTC, GTS, and GT get the same size wheels and are vented as well, except these brakes are from Brembo and are performance brakes.

The ACR gets, the big 15.4-inch front and 14.2 inch rear carbon-ceramic disc brakes, which are cross-drilled and vented, and brings the ACR to a stop from 70 to 0 in 134 feet.

The shortest stopping distance from 70 to 0 mpg is by the Porsche 911 Carrera of 135 feet. Then comes the Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport with 135 feet. We know the ACR trim does the shortest distance of the above cars, but the SRT should not be far from the Corvette. The light weight of Porsche does help it in braking department.

Fuel Economy
6.5/10

The Dodge Viper SRT coupe gives 12/19/14 mpg in the city/highway/combined, respectively. Dodge equips the viper with a 16-gallon fuel tank, allowing it to have a range of 192 miles in the city, 304 miles on the highway, and a combined range of 224 miles. The fuel economy figures of Dodge does suffer in comparison due to its highly powerful engine.

The most combined range is offered by the Porsche 911 Carrera of 388 miles. Then comes the Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport offering 351 miles and the Dodge Viper SRT which offers 224 miles, the least of the above combined ranges. This is due to the big engine, not so good mpg figures and a average fuel tank size.

Interior
6.8/10

The Dodge Viper SRT can seat two occupants in the cabin comfortably. The interior changes a bit with the trims. The base SRT trim comes with cloth upholstery on the sports bucket seats. The GTC gets leather interior and seats with microsuede inserts while the GTS and GT trim get leather upholstery on 6-way power driver and passenger seats.

The ACR gets a more bare interior with lesser sound insulation, lighter-weight carpeting, and manually adjustable seats. For the interior surfaces, there is carbon fiber and even aluminum interior. Automatic air conditioning will keep the passengers cool in many situations.

The Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport offers the most legroom with 43 inches and marginally behind it in legroom is Dodge offering 42.7-inches of legroom. We reckon the SRT offers more legroom than the Porsche 911 Carrera. In the headroom and shoulder room too, Chevrolet offers better figures. Few key features include-

  • Cloth upholstery (base)
  • Leather upholstery (mid-range trims)
  • 6-way power-adjustable seats
  • Lightweight carpeting (ACR)
  • Carbon Fiber and aluminum interior surfaces

Infotainment system

The Viper gets an 8.4-inch touchscreen that runs on the Uconnect infotainment, which is user-friendly. The Viper gets a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system as standard. An 18-speaker audio system is also offered as an option.

The infotainment's 8.4-inch screen is responsive enough. It comes with Bluetooth, satellite radio, a USB port, and navigation. Major infotainment features are-

  • 8.4 inch-touchscreen
  • 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system
  • Available 18-speaker audio system
  • Bluetooth
  • Satellite radio
  • USB ports
  • Navigation

Cargo volume

Even though cargo space doesn’t really matter in this segment, however, the Dodge Viper SRT coupe gets a cargo space of 14.7 cu.ft. This much space is enough to hold a couple of large duffle bags and also any racing gear you might have.

The Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport comes with the most space offering 15 cu.ft. of space. Then comes the SRT Coupe offering 14.7 cu.ft of space. The Porsche has a front trunk which is smaller than the two, hence we can say it will be the least of the above cars.

Exterior
6.0/10

The Dodge Viper is big and low, it features a long hood and looks like it is going to attack any second. Each trim level has its own set of exterior features, so select it accordingly.

Some packages help with aerodynamics like the Time Attack package and Extreme Aero package available for the ACR and GTC trims, which enhance the aerodynamics to reduce the 0-60 time and allows you to go around turns much faster and with more grip. The standard range of Dodge paints and wheels options are available along with decals and racing stripes options, to make your ride unique.

In terms of dimensions, the Dodge Viper is similar to the other cars. There are no major differences other than the curb weight, where the Dodge Viper is the middle weight, but favors the heavier side of the lineup, the lightest being the Porsche 911 Carrera.

Safety
9.0/10

The NHTSA has not yet rated the Dodge Viper. Like the NHTSA, the IIHS has also not rated the Dodge Viper. However, dodge Viper does get a lot of safety features fitted as standard focused on keeping the occupants safe. Standard features like airbags, ABS, and more are part of the coupe. Some of these safety features are:

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • ABS And Driveline Traction Control
  • Uconnect Access Emergency Sos
  • Parkview Back-Up Camera
  • Dual Stage Driver And Passenger Front Airbags
  • Airbag Occupancy Sensor
  • Low Tire Pressure Warning

Competition
6.0/10

Dodge Viper vs Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport

TheChevrolet Corvette Grand Sport is $17,000 cheaper than the base model of the Dodge Viper and is similar in performance to it as well, but offers much more range.

However, the Viper is more powerful and comes with many customization options, allowing you to make it grippier on turns and faster and look menacing as well. We do prefer the V10, but you cannot go wrong in buying either of them.

Dodge Viper vs Porsche 911 Carrera

ThePorsche 911 Carrera gets a much smaller 3L engine which produces a power of 370hp and is cheaper than the Viper by $6,000. However, the Porsche is similar in performance figures.

So, if you don’t need a much powerful engine, but better fuel economy and range and the German engineering, the Porsche would be the best buy, but for us, a naturally aspirated V10 is much more fun.

Final Verdict

The Viper starting at $87,895 for the SRT goes up to $118,795 for the ACR coupe. The Viper does get the range-topping features like the biggest engine, which produces the best power and torque and the best acceleration figures. The Viper does prove itself to be the best sports coupe for the price it comes and offers what is the best. So, if a better performance and a bigger engine is all you need, theDodge Viper has the right cards for you.
