The Fiat 124 Spider Classica is a performance car with intimidating looks and aggressive power. For $24,995 you are getting the best you could but it does not have packages to upgrade luxury and convenience and so, going for the Lusso will be the trim level to get.

The 2017 124 Spider is blessed with an all-new homemade 160 bhp, 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine producing 184 lb.-ft. of torque.

It has a 6-speed manual transmission which directs all the power to the rear wheels.

The Fiat 124 Spider has the second most powerful engine making 160 hp, the most powerful being the Volkswagen Beetle. The third most powerful being the Mazda MX-5 making 155hp and then comes the Mini Cooper Convertible making 134.

The Fiat 124 Spider suffers drastically in its infotainment functionality. It has a 3-inch infotainment display with integrated AM/FM stereo, Auxiliary power outlet, Bluetooth Connectivity, 6-speakers, USB connection. Under the technology package as it adds a 7-inch screen and HD radio. In the Lusso trim level, the optional technology package is standard fitment. Unlike other vehicles, you don't get Navigation, Android Auto, or Apple CarPlay.

2017 Fiat 124 Spider Trunk volume

The 124 Spider has an oval-shaped trunk which offers 4.9 cubic foot of cargo volume, the compact 2-seater sports car you can't expect much. But this is enough for your everyday items and two medium-sized duffle bags.

The most strong spaces offered by the mini Cooper Convertible with 7.6 cu-ft., then comes the Volkswagen beetle offering 7.1 cu-ft. of trunk space. Following the above two are the Fiat 124 Spider with 4.9 cu-ft of trunk space and the Mazda MX-5 offering 4.6 cu-ft. of space.

The Fiat 124 Spider pretty much represents the Mazda Miata MX-5 in looks and body style and dimensions but, in order to keep it different Fiat changed the exterior styling, body length and kept the touch of the old Pininfarina bonnet design.

The 124 Spider looks stunning and aggressive, it has a low-profile body and a soft roof which is accessible manually. The outside is completed with a set of 16” inch aluminum wheels in silver on the Classica and 17” aluminum wheels in silver on the Lusso.

In terms of exterior dimensions, the124 Spider is similar to the rest of the above convertibles. The Volkswagen Beetle Convertible is a little bit wider and taller than the Fiat and that’s about the difference between the above cars. The biggest difference comes in curb weight where the Fiat is on the lighter side of the scales and is nearly 800 pounds lighter than the heaviest - The Volkswagen Beetle.

Fiat 124 Spider vs Volkswagen Beetle Convertible

The Fiat 124 Spider faces tough competition from the beetle in every aspect so far. The Volkswagen Beetle has less fuel economy and a few milliseconds slower than the fiat but it is a 4-seater convertible, has better interior space, and offers better functionality than the 124 Spider at the same price, making the Beetle a much better option, except it lacks in Italian styling.

Fiat 124 Spider vs Mazda MX-5 Miata Sports

The Fiat 124 Spider and the Mazda MX-5 Miata are cousins. Well, the Mazda may have a less powerful engine but it is better in performance. The difference between the two is in the interior where both are similar dimensions but the Fiat has more trunk space. Another difference is the range where the Fiat does offer more and then comes the styling. We do like Mazda’s new styling but, going up against the Italian styling of the Fiat 124, we prefer the 124 Spider.

The Fiat 124 Spider is better than the Mini Cooper in almost every way, except the Mini Cooper Convertible seats more people and has more trunk space. But, when it comes to comparing the classically styled Italian convertible to a Mini Cooper Convertible we do prefer the Fiat 124 Spider.

The Fiat 124 Spider is a good sports car. It is convertible, light, powerful, small, and agile too. The handling and control it provides to the driver make it fun to ride and is loved by most sports car enthusiasts. It is affordable, fuel-efficient, and never disappointing in terms of performance as well. In case you are interested in buying this car, go for the Lusso.
