About 2017 Ford Explorer

4.1

Overall Rating

Ford Explorer is a 7-seater SUV that comes with a relatively affordable windows sticker price. It's a great SUV that checks out most from the 'should have' list. However, a couple of upgrades are made to the 2017 Ford Explorer to keep up with the growing SUV market. Back when it was launched, the SUV was a near-perfect heavy-duty SUV.

The Ford Explorer is among the best 7-seater SUV that comes with a relatively affordable window sticker price. For the year 2017, the car received a couple of upgrades to keep up with the SUV competition in the American market. The 2017 Ford Explorer SUV comes at a price range of $31,160 and is offered with a 3.5-liter V6 engine which has a power output of 290hp and provides a combined mileage of 20 mpg. This is the same engine that was used on the previous generation Explorer as well.

The Explorer is a choice hub in terms of seating number, trims and engines: you have 6 or 7 seats, 5 trims and 3 engine options. Not only this, but the array of features offered on this car place it on a high standard as well. The Explorer was the best option back in the day. But in 2017, when the market is flooded with all kinds of big cars, who offer a lot and are priced aggressively, we do wonder how does the Explorer stand out? Find out in our in-depth review. We shall talk about the Explorer's performance, the asthetics, the comfort and the safety on this car.

If you have a tight budget, the base trim of the Ford Explorer provides a decent number of features and great quality alongside a powerful performance. However, get the AWD to truly unleash the prowess of this heavy-duty. That being said, the XLT AWD is a sweet spot with more features and luxury as compared to the base configuration.

Love this car

Pros

The roomy interior, The get up and go

Cons

That there is so many electrical components, That it is not leather

I love this car it is huge and holds my whole family and all of our baby/teenage stuff. It gets great gas mileage and has a lot of get up and go. I wish my interior was leather but that is my own fault for not getting it lol. Overall it is a great quality car that is safe and big enough for my whole family to go explore.

2017 Ford Explorer Review

Pros

  • Muscular Six-Cylinder Engine
  • Comfortable and Smooth Ride
  • User-Friendly Infotainment System

Cons

  • Not great Outdoor Visibility
  • Unsatisfying Back Seats

Ford Explorer is a 7-seater SUV that comes with a relatively affordable windows sticker price. It's a great SUV that checks out most from the 'should have' list. However, a couple of upgrades are made to the 2017 Ford Explorer to keep up with the growing SUV market. Back when it was launched, the SUV was a near-perfect heavy-duty SUV.

Overview

The 2017 Ford Explorer SUV comes at a price range of $31,160 and is offered with a 3.5-liter V6 engine which has a power output of 290hp and provides a combined mileage of 20 mpg. We shall talk about the Explorer's performance, the asthetics, the comfort and the safety on this car.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The new Ford Explorer gets a sticker price of $31,160, which is very agressive and on point. For that kind of price, you will get a car big enough to house 7 seats in a spacious cabin, a feature-rich cabin, and a big V6 engine block that growls at higher RPMs. The Explorer comes with smart infotainment systems featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Ford offers the car in five different trim levels, and there's the option to choose between AWD or FWD. However, the FWD version is available only on three trims, the Base, XLT and Sport.

Pricing for the various trims ranges from $31,160 to $53,235. For the lowest price, Explorer will push 290 horsepower to its front wheels while a couple of extra grand will fetch you an AWD SUV. You get the standard features in the base variant along with a standard V6 engine. You can upgrade them to premium features like the leather seats and steering wheel with Sony's premium audio system and much more. A turbocharged variant of the V6 in Explorer comes with the Sport and Platinum Trim.

Engine and Performance
7.7/10

The Ford Explorer is powered by a Twin-Turbo 3.5 Liter V6 engine. This engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. This combination of the 3.6L powertrain and the 6-speed gearbox under this SUV does justice to the hefty Explorer. The power delivery is smooth and linear and being a V6 motor, it revs cleanly without any lag. The performance of this car is sporty indeed

The 6-speed has perfec gear ratios for this car, and with the peak torque kicking in the middle rpms has helped the Explorer deliver a punchy and bosted performance.

The Traverse takes a lower spot in the list with just 281 HP being produced from a 3.6 liter V6. GMC tops the list with its Acadia, which produces 20 horsepower more than the Explorer.

2017 Ford Explorer Acceleration Performance

The 2017 Ford Explorer is no dragster. It is not designed to accelerate as quickly as possible from one traffic signal to another. The base 3.5L V6 takes its own sweet time to push this 5000-pound heavy beast to 60 mph and it won't ever intimidate any driver. The Ford Explorer races from 0-60 mph in 7.7 seconds.

How good is the handling of the 2017 Ford Explorer?

Ride and handling in the 2017 Ford Explorer SUV feel synchronized to give you an impressive driving experience. Although the steering lacks a sense of feedback, the electric-assisted rack is quick and light enough for activities like driving through a congested car park. Ride it over bumps or potholes, the heavy-duty glides over it. Cornering is smoothly handled as well.

However, it feels heavy when pottering around town. The suspension is nicely tuned but around the bends, it rolls like a pig due to a high riding stance and heavy curb weight. it surely lacks the poise of other crossovers in the segment and feels more like a traditional SUV in the way it drives and handles. That being said, it scores high on ride comfort.

What about the braking system on the 2017 Ford Explorer?

Brakes on the 2017 Ford Explorer SUV are confidence-inspiring, to say the least. The pedal feels soft and easy to use. The SUV reacts positively to sudden braking maneuvers and under hard braking, the electronics make sure that the SUV maintains composure at all times.

Interior
7.0/10

The interior of the 2017 Ford Explorer SUV has thrown away the plastic materials of the past and has adopted more upmarket material with fine touches and refined textures to make the interior appear upscale. This has added an additional charm to the otherwise quaint cabin making it attractive. The 2017 Ford Explorer is a 7-Seater SUV with two seats in the front row, three in the 2nd row, and 2 seats in the 3rd row.

The third row is where you’d find it a bit cramped. Inside the Explorer, its interior has leather seats and leather on the steering wheel as well. With excellent space and commodious room in the cabin, legroom is good enough for the first and second row although you might feel your knee brushing against the back of the second row when sitting in the third. Nevertheless, the Explorer comes with great headroom inside the cabin.

Competition
7.0/10

Ford Explorer V/S Chevrolet Traverse

Chevrolet and Ford are the true rivals to each other with both the American manufacturers having a car to pit against each other in every segment. Comparing the Traverse and the Explorer, both the SUVs house with a twin-turbo V6 engine which produces a little more power in the Explorer.

While almost on par with the Explorer, Traverse falls short in the quarter-mile drag race. Where the new Chevrolet Traverse shines is its practicality, with better cargo space of 36 cubic feet more than the Explorer and has 8 seats against the 7 seats in Explorer.

Ford Explorer V/S Toyota Highlander

The SUV from Japan has a lot to offer for the price it comes with. Both the heavy duties are powered by a 3.5 Liter twin-turbo V6 engine which produces similar output in the Ford Explorer and the new Toyota Highlander. However, Toyota is still slower than the Explorer. With the rear seats in use, Highlander has 8 cubic feet of lesser space which goes up to 83 cubic feet with all the seats folded which are a couple more than in explorer.

Ford Explorer V/S GMC Acadia

The new GMC Acadia is another American SUV but with a lesser seating capacity capped to 5. This 5-seater SUV makes 310 horsepower from its 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 engine and is more powerful and quicker than the Explorer. With practicality and performance under the body of the GMC, it all costs you 10 grand more than the Explorer which we feel isn’t quite worth the upgrade.
