Overall Rating
With a base price tag of $42,375, the new Genesis G80 screams value for money. Moreover, it has two powertrain options.
With a base price tag of $42,375, the new Genesis G80 screams value for money. Moreover, it has two powertrain options. There are a total of 3 variants on offer. So, every buyer can find their version of the G80 sedan. In its base trim, the G80 sedan competes against Cadillac XTS, Lincoln Continental Premier, and Lexus GS 350.
Although the 5.0L V6 appears to be a satisfactory deal with the enhanced power figures and a longer feature list, it sports a price tag of a whopping 15k over the base model. As the vehicle thrives on its value for money appeal, the standard 3.8L trim makes more sense. It is available in both AWD and RWD so all-weather drivability should not be an issue either.

The 5.0 Ultimate trim comes with the 5.0L V6 engine which is only offered with an RWD drivetrain configuration. It comes with 19-inch alloy wheels, 17 speaker Lexicon system, and a 9.2 inch HD screen. All the trims are paired to an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
We Recommend
Although the 5.0L V6 appears to be a satisfactory deal with the enhanced power figures and a longer feature list, it sports a price tag of a whopping 15k over the base model. As the vehicle thrives on its value for money appeal, the standard 3.8L trim makes more sense. It is available in both AWD and RWD so all-weather drivability should not be an issue either.
As aforementioned, the G80 offers two engine choices - starting from the naturally aspirated 3.8L V6 engine and the range-topping 5.0L V6 engine. Both of them are paired with 8-speed automatic transmission.
The standard 3.8L V6 engine shows great refinement and daily drivability which satisfies the need of people who desire luxury from their G80 sedan.

On paper, the G80 is one of the better-powered cars amongst its rivals. The Lexus GS 350 features more or less the same engine setup. The Cadillac XTS and the Lincoln Continental Premier while being thousands of dollars more expensive than the G80, falls short in terms of performance.
The acceleration on the G80 Standard is laid back, to say the least. The car takes its own sweet time to build up momentum. Even when it is in the process of building speed there is absolutely no drama from the engine.

In comparison with rivals, the G80 takes 6.4 sec to go from 0 to 60 mph and a quarter of a mile comes up in 14.7 sec. It is second to only the Lexus GS 350 which is about 0.3 seconds faster in the 0-60 mph run and 0.9 seconds faster in the quarter-mile run. The Lincoln is closely behind the G80 at 6.8 seconds for 0-60 mph.
The handling dynamics of the G80 is calm and composed. The car is tuned to be the best of luxury sedans and is not aiming to thrill people with its canyon-carving potential. Therefore, the engine takes some huffs and puffs to get all 2 tons of the luxury sedan rolling.
The steering response is not illustrative and is similar to most of the cars in this segment. The suspension, however, is pretty sweet at filtering out impacts from potholes and bad roads like they're nothing.
The braking aspect of the G80 sedan will not let you forget, you're driving a luxury sedan. The pedal in itself is spongy and the response is relaxed, to say the least. The car requires a decent push of the pedal for the brakes to realize their full potential.

In comparison with the rivals, the Genesis comes out on the top with 109 feet stopping distance in a 60-0 mph halt even after sporting a curb weight of 4195 lbs. The Lincoln Continental is the second best at 110 feet while both Lexus and Caddy take over 5-10 feet more to stop.
Fuel economy on the Genesis G80 is nothing that the company would put under the spotlight. The engines on the G80 are gas guzzlers and return a substandard fuel economy figure.

In direct comparison with the competition, the Lexus GS steals the crown with only 1 mpg combined more than the G80 at 23 mpg. The Caddy offers pretty much the same FE as the G80 while the Lincoln is at the back end of the line with only 20 mpg combined.
Thanks to the heightened roofline there is no shortage of headroom at the back and front. However, the front passengers have it best as there are features like power-adjustable heated and ventilated seats. Although massage function is missing from the list one can manage without it.

The Genesis G80 is at the top in terms of passenger volume at 107 cu-ft. The headroom/legroom/shoulder room is best amongst the list of rivals. The Lexus GS 350 is the least spacious car in this comparison.
The infotainment system on the Genesis G80 is on par with the industry standards. Features such as Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, Sat-Nav. are standard throughout the line. The standard 8.0 inch HD screen is great to look at but the optional 9.2-inch screen is even better.
The MMI system is similar to most tablets and smartphones of the day and provides fluid performance most of the time. Some of the major infotainment features offered with the 2017 Genesis G80 are:
The Genesis G80 is a notch lower than the rivals in terms of cargo capacity. Despite sporting the largest dimensions amongst its rivals the trunk volume is only 15.3 cu.-ft. Genesis has focused on providing more space to the car’s commuters than making the trunk more spacious, which is fine too.

The Lincoln Continental is the only sedan that comes close to the Genesis G80 in terms of dimensions. As a matter of fact, it's the only car that is heavier than the G80. Some of the major exterior features offered with the 2017 Genesis G80 are:
Both IIHS and NHTSA ratings are available for the new Genesis G80. The 2017 Genesis G80 is actually one of the better-equipped cars in terms of safety. A host of active features are always on alert to keep the driver and the passengers safe. The IIHS has given a “superior” rating to the front crash prevention of the Genesis G80 with headlights rated as “Acceptable”. The 2017 Genesis G80 has also been awarded a 5-Star overall rating by the NHTSA. Some of the key safety features offered with the 2017 Genesis G80 are:
The Cadillac XTS is one of those sedans which are meant to be primarily enjoyed from the rear seats. In terms of comfort and opulence, the rear seat is unparalleled at this price range. The XTS offers fair driving performance.
The Caddy is about $6k more expensive than the G80. But, it offers fair value for the extra price. If you want a chauffeur-driven vehicle, the XTS should be your choice but for anything else, the G80 is a better value for money.
The Lincoln Continental is on the old-school luxury car. The Continental offers traditional luxury that is big on form and function. The 3.7 Liter Ti-VCT engine fails to provide the right performance but it's actually adequate if you are gonna be chauffeur driven.
One can never forget that the car is $10,000 more expensive than the G80 and significantly offers lesser performance. All in all the Lincoln is a decent car but the G80 offers better driving dynamics.
The comparison between the Lexus GS 350 and the Genesis G80 is a tough one. The styling element on the Lexus will appeal more to the masses. The interior quality of the Genesis takes it away by a thin margin mainly due to its stronger ergonomics.
The engine response and performance figures of both the cars are similar. Hence, it depends more on your personal preference as there is very little to differentiate these vehicles.
The Genesis G80 is a masterstroke by the Koreans. The Genesis G80 is one such car that can give even the most established German or Japanese counterparts a run for their money. Sure you have to spend substantially more over the base variant to get any sort of sportiness from the car but it is up for grabs nonetheless. But, from the back seat, where most of the potential owners would be enjoying this car, it is a flawless car even with the base variant.
