Overall Rating
Starting with a price of $74,400, the 2017 Jaguar XJ is quite cheaper than the rest of the rivals. Despite the lesser price, it comes with a similar 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 engine that generates 340 hp of power and 332 lb-ft of torque.
Packed with the latest technology, the 2017 Jaguar XJ manages to grab a top position among its prominent rivals. The 2017 XJ is available in both regular and long-wheelbase models, the latter being standard for the class. All XJs are offered with heated and cooled seats across the board, but only the longer XJ models can be assembled with reclining rear seats, rear footrests, fold-down laptop trays, and a dual-screen rear entertainment system.
Powering the 2017 XJ is a V6 in the base models, while the mid-and top trim levels enjoy V8. The base models have a choice of rear or all-wheel drive. The engines are smooth and offer better traction than some of its competitors. The sedan has to compete against German giants like BMW 740i, Audi A8 L, and Mercedes-Benz S550.
The Base version of the Jaguar XJ has all the basic standard necessities. Although the XJL Portfolio trim is the one trim we would recommend as along with the basic features as standard, it gets leather seats and a 4.5-inch extra wheelbase as well, at not too much of a price difference.

The Jaguar XJ is currently available in 4 trims, with the base one costing $74,400 and the top trim ringing in at $95,000. Escalating from a humble base V-6 powered XJ R-Sport, the lineup encompasses a milder power option, but a supercharged V-8 awaits you at the top inside the XJ-Supercharged variant. Jaguar also provides the privilege to pick between a short and a long-wheelbase XJ. Meanwhile, the supercharged version is the only one with the presence of an AWD mechanism, whereas, RWD comes standard with the rest.

The XJ gets a standard 19-inch front wheel, a rearview camera, a panoramic sunroof, and LED lighting as standard. That said, the XJ offers a great package in such a price range. In either of the configurations, the base version suffers the absence of an active locking rear differential, while it exhibits a strong sense of feature-laden comfort.

Fighting the Germans is not a piece of cake. However, the Britishers are in no mood for jokes either. The 2017 Jaguar XJ is powered by a 3.0 Liter intercooled supercharged V-6 that produces 340 hp of power and 332 lb-ft of torque. The power is fed to the rear wheels through a smooth 8-speed automatic transmission. Option for AWD is also available with some of the trims in the lineup.

The Jaguar, BMW, and Audi all have a similar 3.0-liter engine, producing almost equal values of torque and power. While the Mercedes-Benz S550 does get a 4.7-liter engine and produces almost 1.5 times torque and power than the rest, albeit at a huge price difference. In other three rivals, Jaguar wins the race by offering 340 hp.
The Jaguar has been a tough one to beat earlier with all its aluminum body claddings and weight reductions at places wherever possible. This time too, the Jag has turned up the beat setting a time of just 5.4 seconds from rest to 60 MPH.
Although, as it strolls further, the sedan falls some bits short of hastiness, and thus records a quarter-mile in 14 seconds, letting the Audi A8L and the BMW 740i catch up with it.

The biggest disappointment here has to be the Mercedes-Benz, which despite having such a big engine produces almost similar acceleration. Things turn worse in the quarter-mile department, where the Mercedes-Benz is a distant fourth, while the other three are at par. All in all, the competition between the sedans is tough as the difference between the best and worst is meager.
Like the other Jaguars, this XJ has something about it. The electro-hydraulic steering is smooth, and the relatively narrow tires offer minimum initial turning effort. The steering wheel has a paddle shift behind it if you like playing with the tachometer yourself. As it is a rear-wheel drive, the Jaguar XJ is agile around the corners and responds well to steering inputs.
In most respects, the XJ is a smooth ride and fairly unfussy. While other models offer more performance customization, the Jag keeps it fairly simple, predictable, and pure. An independent suspension (coils up front, links in back), electronically adjustable air springs in back, and an electronically controlled rear differential on supercharged cars lets the XJ go about its work more directly. Owners can use "JaguarDrive Control" to adjust Normal, Dynamic, and Winter settings for the throttle, steering, transmission, and ride quality.
The Jaguar XJ gets 14-inch brake discs up front and 12.8-inch brakes in the rear wheels. These are capable of stopping the 3,891-pound car from 60 mph in 122 feet. Not bad, but the Audi and the BMW stop faster. That said, the brake pedal feel of the 2017 Jaguar XJ is right out of the top drawer.

Comparatively, the Jaguar XJ offers a poor display of braking performance. Surprisingly, it is despite its shredded weight. The BMW, on the other hand, shows a very direct and flawless braking stance with 112 ft. to a stop from 60 mph. Audi follows behind with a braking distance of 118 feet.
The 2017 Jaguar XJ delivers 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. The Jaguar XJ gets a combined EPA fuel economy rating of 21 mpg. Again, BMW 740i comes out to be the best, giving around 24 mpg of combined fuel economy, with the Audi just a little behind at 22 mpg.

In comparison, Mercedes suffers in the fuel economy department due to its more powerful than the rivals in the segment. Mercedes manages to offer 18 mpg in the city, 26 on the highway, and a combined mileage of 21 mpg. Jaguar and Mercedes stand together in the combined mileage figure.
The cabin of the Jaguar XJ has an airy feel to it despite its tightly spaced dash. The switches and the toggles have a premium feel to them. Gone are the wooden spaces, and it comes with high-quality fiber. The sunroof is well placed too, giving a great view.
The 2017 Jaguar XJ is a sports sedan that accommodates 5 people. It provides heated and cooled seating as well. The passenger rear seats are also electrically powered. It also has a seat memory system, which can store the preference of multiple users.

The seats are electronically powered providing ample support to the driver. They are power-adjustable and heated. They are made of premium synthetic leather upholstery. Add to that, leather-wrapped steering wheel, which can be adjusted for a spot-on driving position. Some of the interior features in 2017 Jaguar XJ are:
The infotainment system in the Jaguar is pretty good and does the job required without much flamboyance though. However, the digital instrument cluster is not intuitive, to say the least.
The sedan by Jaguar offers a decent list of tech for the entertainment of the passengers sitting inside. Few major infotainment features include-:
The 2017 Jaguar XJ has a decent-sized trunk amongst its competitors, where the BMW is the best. The trunk of the XJ can easily hold a few duffle bags among others. It has a wide opening with a flat surface, which is good for inserting and removing those heavy bags. The sedan manages to offer 15.2 cu-ft of space.

No rival comes near the BMW 740i in this parameter though. The BMW has a trunk volume of 18.2 ft3, with the Mercedes-Benz coming a distant second, considering the close competition in these cars with a space of 16.3 ft3, closely followed by the Jaguar with 15.2 ft3 of space. Audi stands last with 14.2 ft3 of cargo space.
The 2017 Jaguar XJ shares the same design language that debuted back in 2009, and it's still gorgeous. There are delicate curves all around, and the cat paw tail lights look distinctly beautiful. LED headlamps were added in 2016 to keep up with time. In terms of sheer length, the Jaguar is actually shorter than its three German rivals. However, its coupe-like silhouette and sleek lines make it look longer. More importantly, it’s lighter than the Audi, BMW, and Mercedes, making it more agile around corners.

Comparing it with the rivals, the Jaguar XJ is the lightest and the smallest in the group. Well, but the ride is quite tall in itself with a ground clearance leading the segment by some margin. It is only in length where the XJ faces defeat by a significant amount. That would explain the minuscule cabin of this exuberant sedan. Some of the exterior features include:
Neither the IIHS nor the NHTSA have performed crash tests on the 2017 Jaguar XJ. For the makers of the Jaguar, safety is the primary concern. The producers have added numerous features to make the Jaguar XJ a safe machine. The Jaguar perfectly sets a paragon for the new brand sedans. It has great safety features installed in it, which makes it a safe car for the passengers. Few key safety features include-
The BMW 740i sedan is a better car than the XJ, but it's starting price is about $8,000 higher than the XJ's. The 740i does boast of some handsome styling, a more user-friendly infotainment system with hand gesture controls, and more rear-seat legroom.
It also has stronger engines, which include a V-8 and a more Vigorous V-12. The 740i is also available as a fuel-efficient plug-in hybrid. Factor in BMW's higher predicted reliability rating and nicer interior materials, and it's the winner in this comparison.
The fight between the Jaguar XJ and the Audi R8 L goes right down to the wire. Both generate almost equal figures in the engine capacity and the fuel economy. The cargo capacity is where the Jaguar is a bit better, though not much. Therefore, with almost equal features and specifications, the much cheaper Jaguar XJ is the car that wins this comparison.
Work over about $15,000 more for the Mercedes-Benz S550, and you'll be swimming in absolute luxury. The S550 boasts tremendously soft and supportive seats, featuring power adjustments and space for all occupants. This super luxury vehicle also has a better suspension and robust engines, which surprisingly generates equal power though.
The S-Class infotainment system has a slight learning curve. However, it's easy to use once you get the hang of it, and the system is much more modern and intuitive than the XJ's setup. The S-Class is the superior choice.
