Escalating from a humble base V-6 powered XJ R-Sport, the lineup encompasses a milder power option, but a supercharged V-8 awaits you at the top inside the XJ-Supercharged variant. Jaguar also provides the privilege to pick between a short and a long-wheelbase XJ. Meanwhile, the supercharged version is the only one with the presence of an AWD mechanism, whereas, RWD comes standard with the rest.

The XJ gets a standard 19-inch front wheel, a rearview camera, a panoramic sunroof, and LED lighting as standard. That said, the XJ offers a great package in such a price range. In either of the configurations, the base version suffers the absence of an active locking rear differential, while it exhibits a strong sense of feature-laden comfort.

The Base version of the Jaguar XJ has all the basic standard necessities. Although the XJL Portfolio trim is the one trim we would recommend as along with the basic features as standard, it gets leather seats and a 4.5-inch extra wheelbase as well, at not too much of a price difference.

Fighting the Germans is not a piece of cake. However, the Britishers are in no mood for jokes either. The 2017 Jaguar XJ is powered by a 3.0 Liter intercooled supercharged V-6 that produces 340 hp of power and 332 lb-ft of torque. The power is fed to the rear wheels through a smooth 8-speed automatic transmission. Option for AWD is also available with some of the trims in the lineup.

The Jaguar, BMW, and Audi all have a similar 3.0-liter engine, producing almost equal values of torque and power. While the Mercedes-Benz S550 does get a 4.7-liter engine and produces almost 1.5 times torque and power than the rest, albeit at a huge price difference. In other three rivals, Jaguar wins the race by offering 340 hp.

2017 Jaguar XJ Acceleration

The Jaguar has been a tough one to beat earlier with all its aluminum body claddings and weight reductions at places wherever possible. This time too, the Jag has turned up the beat setting a time of just 5.4 seconds from rest to 60 MPH.

Although, as it strolls further, the sedan falls some bits short of hastiness, and thus records a quarter-mile in 14 seconds, letting the Audi A8L and the BMW 740i catch up with it.

The biggest disappointment here has to be the Mercedes-Benz, which despite having such a big engine produces almost similar acceleration. Things turn worse in the quarter-mile department, where the Mercedes-Benz is a distant fourth, while the other three are at par. All in all, the competition between the sedans is tough as the difference between the best and worst is meager.

2017 Jaguar XJ Ride & Handling:

Like the other Jaguars, this XJ has something about it. The electro-hydraulic steering is smooth, and the relatively narrow tires offer minimum initial turning effort. The steering wheel has a paddle shift behind it if you like playing with the tachometer yourself. As it is a rear-wheel drive, the Jaguar XJ is agile around the corners and responds well to steering inputs.

In most respects, the XJ is a smooth ride and fairly unfussy. While other models offer more performance customization, the Jag keeps it fairly simple, predictable, and pure. An independent suspension (coils up front, links in back), electronically adjustable air springs in back, and an electronically controlled rear differential on supercharged cars lets the XJ go about its work more directly. The cabin of the Jaguar XJ has an airy feel to it despite its tightly spaced dash. The switches and the toggles have a premium feel to them. Gone are the wooden spaces, and it comes with high-quality fiber. The sunroof is well placed too, giving a great view.

The 2017 Jaguar XJ is a sports sedan that accommodates 5 people. It provides heated and cooled seating as well. The passenger rear seats are also electrically powered. It also has a seat memory system, which can store the preference of multiple users.

2017 Jaguar XJ Cargo

The 2017 Jaguar XJ has a decent-sized trunk amongst its competitors, where the BMW is the best. The trunk of the XJ can easily hold a few duffle bags among others. It has a wide opening with a flat surface, which is good for inserting and removing those heavy bags. The sedan manages to offer 15.2 cu-ft of space.

No rival comes near the BMW 740i in this parameter though. The BMW has a trunk volume of 18.2 ft3, with the Mercedes-Benz coming a distant second, considering the close competition in these cars with a space of 16.3 ft3, closely followed by the Jaguar with 15.2 ft3 of space. Audi stands last with 14.2 ft3 of cargo space.

The 2017 Jaguar XJ shares the same design language that debuted back in 2009, and it's still gorgeous. There are delicate curves all around, and the cat paw tail lights look distinctly beautiful. LED headlamps were added in 2016 to keep up with time. In terms of sheer length, the Jaguar is actually shorter than its three German rivals. However, its coupe-like silhouette and sleek lines make it look longer. More importantly, it’s lighter than the Audi, BMW, and Mercedes, making it more agile around corners.

Comparing it with the rivals, the Jaguar XJ is the lightest and the smallest in the group. Well, but the ride is quite tall in itself with a ground clearance leading the segment by some margin. The Jaguar XJ blends old-world elegance with a choice of commanding engines. A dated and complex infotainment system, some low-grade cabin trimmings, less interior room than some rivals, and a low-reliability rating diminish its overall appeal. However, if the Germans are too generic for you and you want something more exclusive, go for the Jaguar.
