About 2017 Jeep Patriot

3.5

Overall Rating

The Patriot is based on a front-drive unibody compact car platform that shares with the Jeep Compass. Although mechanically similar, the Patriot is designed to be more capable off-road than the Compass.

The Jeep Patriot is a proper SUV with a combination of high-level technology, and comfort all packed into an SUV. It is one of the best compact SUVs available in the market. The Jeep is priced at $18,040 for the base variant Sport and goes up to $26,985 for the top variant High Altitude which offers great comfort and a decent mixture of high-level technology that makes a good SUV at this price.

The base Sport model offers only a few features. Hence, it will be best if you skip it. We recommend you to buy the Latitude trim as it houses exclusive features like power windows and door locks, air conditioning, remote keyless entry, and alloy wheels. Switch to the top-end High Altitude trim if you wish for leather seats.

Cons

There are no USB ports in the car. Made in 2017 and no ports in the car., The car needs a few more interior lights. The back half of the jeep doesn't provide a decent amount of light.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The 2017 Jeep Patriot comes in four trims starting with the base model Sport. It offers features like premium cloth seats, rear window defroster, and wiper as standard. The Sport SE variant offers features like an outside temperature display, leather-wrapped steering, and illuminated cup holders. In addition to this, the car offers some additional features like halogen headlamps and Fog lamps.

Engine and Performance
5.7/10

For the 2017 Jeep Patriot, two engines are on offer. First is a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine producing 158 horses of power and 141 pound-feet of torque. Transmission options for this engine include a five-speed manual or a continuously variable automatic. Next is a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine that churns out 172 horses of power and 165 pound-feet of torque.

Power is routed through a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-Wheel-drive is standard while all-wheel-drive is optional on all the models. In terms of power delivery, both engines feel insufficiently powered. The CVT automatic struggles to find the right gear sometimes and high speeds make loud noises.

In terms of power, the Patriot outshines its rivals but is low on torque. The Subaru Crosstrek and the Mazda CX-3 stand in the same league with very slight differences while the Buick Encore sticks to the last place for its low power but is the highest on torque.

How quick is the 2017 Jeep Patriot from 0-60 MPH?

As mentioned before, the power generated in both engines is insufficient. The SUV struggles to reach high speeds. But that’s a different story. It can hardly overtake other cars on a freeway as the throttle response is not good.

In a 0-60 mph test, the Patriot takes 10 seconds to complete it. That’s the slowest in its class. The drag test is achieved in 17.7 seconds. This is certainly not an SUV you can expect quick acceleration.

In the acceleration test, the Buick Encore takes the quickest 7.8 seconds but slows down later in the quarter-mile test. For Mazda CX-3, that’s the opposite story. It starts lazily but then increases its pace to record 15.8 seconds in the drag test. While the Subaru Crosstrek takes third place, our beloved Patriot is the slowest of all.

How does the 2017 Jeep Patriot handle?

The riding experience with the Jeep Patriot is very average. The car is very smooth and steady but the car's suspension cannot handle stress so well. The steering on this car is very smooth and very responsive. The suspension on this car is also average when compared to its competitors.

The Patriot is designed for some mild off-roading and it definitely handles the gravel roads much nicer than some of the crossovers. Two Four-wheel-drive systems are provided by Jeep. The Freedom Drive I is similar to a regular all-wheel-drive system where the Freedom Drive II is what you’ll need for off-road trailing. With this mode, the Patriot can easily surf over any rough terrain. This particular drive mode is only available in Sport and Latitude trims.

How are the brakes on the 2017 Jeep Patriot?

The Jeep Patriot packs a disk braking system and the car does a good job with breaking. It achieved a stopping distance of 134 feet to stop from 60-0 mph. However, the brakes do not provide the same braking distance consistently. There is a slight delay when the pedal is pushed. Also, when used excessively, the brakes fade a lot.

Fuel Economy
7.3/10

Fuel economy is one of the very important points to consider while buying a car. On that note, the Jeep Patriot delivers a very good fuel economy. In the cities, the Patriot delivers 23 mpg while the highway mileage rounds off to 30 mpg. A combined mpg of 25 is obtained which is quite good for an SUV. The Patriot delivers an impressive mileage but it loses with the competitors in the fuels economy.

The Mazda CX-3 offers an eye-popping fuel economy for its class. It delivers an outstanding 31 mpg combined and is the most fuel-efficient SUV in the segment. Due to a larger fuel tank than the Patriot, the Buick Encore offers better fuel estimates and driving range. On the other hand, the Subaru Crosstrek’s engine sucks the most juice.

Interior
5.7/10

The cabin of the Jeep Patriot is nicely finished and its layout is clean. However, cheap hard plastics make up almost everywhere in the cabin. All five seats come with cloth upholstery as standard but they aren’t comfortable and supportive. It lacks proper cushioning and is suitable for long-distance travel.

The limited steering and seat adjustments can irritate taller drivers to find a comfortable driving position. The head and legroom in the front row are good. The legroom offered in the rear row is more than sufficient for taller occupants. A lot of cabin noise cuts down the creature comforts of the Patriot.

With 43.5 inches of legroom, the Subaru Crosstrek tops the segment. However, it falls short in the rear row. The Patriot gains all the positive points in this field as it offers good interior room compared to its rivals. The Mazda CX-3 is popular among its rivals for its cabin style and good material quality. Some of the interior features include:

  • Power windows
  • Automatic climate control
  • Remote start
  • Keyless entry

How intuitive is the 2017 Jeep Patriot’s infotainment system?

On the center of the dash is a 6.5-inch touchscreen display that carries out all the duties of the Uconnect infotainment system. It feels outdated and the visibility is not that good due to poor graphics. But Jeep offers physical buttons for audio and climate controls which is a plus point.

This doesn’t create much distraction while driving. Important features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are missing in this infotainment system. The sound system on the car is decent which provides a delightful music experience and 4 speakers sound system. Some of the other features include:

  • Satellite radio
  • Auxiliary audio input
  • USB port
  • Wi-Fi hotspot
  • A 115-volt outlet
  • Navigation system
  • An optional 9-speaker Boston Acoustics audio system

How much cargo capacity does the 2017 Jeep Patriot offer?

This is the area where the Jeep Patriot gets all the praises. Along with a practical cabin, it offers an above-average cargo capacity. With the rear seats in place, a cargo capacity of 23 cubic feet is offered which is pretty good than its rivals. With a 60/40 split, the space behind the first row sums up to 63.4 cubic feet. Moreover, Jeep allows the possibility of folding the front passenger’s seat for extra space. Loading items into the cargo area is easy thanks to its flat cargo floor.

Exterior
6.6/10

The design language of the Jeep Patriot is more rugged. With the grille and body cladding, the look is definitely more off-road. Upfront, the style is quite simple but its striking design speaks for itself. Even better for its off-road capability is its 8.1 inches of ground clearance.

It’s small and ergonomic enough for urban drivers to easily maneuver around the city. At 173.8 inches in overall length, it is one of the longest SUVs in its class. Its boxy shape creates a lot of space inside the vehicle.

The Subaru Crosstrek and the Patriot share the same wheelbase of 103.7 inches which is the best in this competition. Length-wise, the Crosstrek takes a step ahead at 175.2 inches. The Mazda CX-3 flaunts the lightest curb weight at 2809 pounds but still is slower than the Buick Encore in terms of performance. The Patriot is a stylish, classy, and bulky SUV from Jeep. The car comes with halogen headlights and LED taillights, automatic windshield and rear wiper, auto light control beside DRL. The car uses 16" X 6.5" Black Steel Wheels as standard. Some of the other features include:

  • Rear Wiper/Washer
  • Halogen Tail Lights
  • Fog Lights

Safety
7.8/10

The Jeep Patriot has earned the worst ratings for its safety. NHTSA gave three out of five stars rollover and front crash but five stars for side impact. The Patriot earned ‘Poor’ ratings for its overlap front crash tests but ‘Good’ ratings on the remaining crash tests. Six airbags are standard on the Patriot. Unlike its rivals, Jeep does not offer many advanced safety features. Some available features include:

  • Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM)
  • Brake Assist
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Rearview camera

Jeep Patriot vs Buick Encore

The new Buick Encore is the best alternative and the best option to consider over the Jeep Patriot SUV as it offers more power, better handling, and good fuel economy than the Patriot.

The external dimensions of the Encore are less than the Patriot. But the braking performance of the Encore is quite impressive.

Final Verdict

Looking for that rugged Jeep appeal but with a slightly more on-road sensibility, it might just be time to get Patriot. This is the entry-level offering from Jeep so the price is very much affordable at $18,000. The cost of ownership isn't that bad either. Fuel economy averages in the low to mid-20s. Jeep has improved pretty much all aspects of its smallest crossover. It’s got the comfort of a car-like ride for everyday use but also is a little more capable than its competitors off the beaten path. Since this is the last production year of the Patriot, it might be the right time to get one.
