About 2017 Lexus CT 200h hybrid

3.8

Overall Rating

The 2017 Lexus CT 200h features a 1.8-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder hybrid engine. The engine is capable of generating 134 horses of power in addition to 142 pound-feet of torque. Though neither is impressive, the numbers are acceptable for the plug-in hybrid segment. For gear-shifting, the ride relies on a CVT automatic transmission.

The Lexus CT 200h continues the legacy of the small, luxurious, and less expensive series from Lexus. It is offered as a hatchback with a four-cylinder hybrid powertrain, capable of a remarkable combined fuel economy of 42 mpg. Previously available in a single trim, this time the ride comes with additional sports-focused trim.

In addition to having precise steering, the Lexus CT 200h also features composed handling. Hence, the ride allows drivers to drive around sharp turns with confidence. The F Sport trim comes with upgraded handling and suspension allowing the steering response to be keener. Both sports and non-sports trims are comfortable to ride.

When the roads get windy, the CT 200h doesn’t handle quite well. However, this car houses a well-sorted chassis. You can really tell it in the corners. The chassis never feels upset over broken pavements. The steering is very accurate and always feels ready and willing to go where you point.

How are the brakes on the 2017 Lexus CT 200h?

The front and rear brakes for the Lexus CT 200h measures 10 and 11 inches in size, respectively. Despite the size difference between brakes, the overall braking is well-balanced. The CT 200h makes use of regenerative brakes. These brakes capture energy when the ride is decelerated for charging the battery. For this very reason, these brakes are often criticized for being squishy. In the hatch, the brakes kind of feel inconsistent. This probably because of the manufacturer's attempt at making regenerative brakes feel sportier. A 122-feet of braking distance is taken by the CT 200h to stop from 60 mph.

The C Max offers the lowest combined fuel economy of 40 mpg among the class rivals. While the Ioniq the best-in-segment combined fuel economy of 58 mpg.

Interior
6.9/10

Like its class rivals, the Lexus CT 200h comes with a maximum passenger capacity of 5. All the seats get leather treatment as standard. The seating positions are upright but offer good levels of comfort. The side bolstering offered keeps you intact at times of sharp turns. Combinations of hard and soft plastics are found in the cabin.

Taller drivers and front passengers will appreciate the fact that the CT 200h has good headroom. Even the legroom in the front row is appreciable. But things get awry in the rear row. Only 32.9 inches of legroom is on offer in the rear row. Hence, this amount of space will not be suitable for six-footers.

How intuitive is the 2017 Lexus CT 200h’s infotainment system?

Inside, the Lexus CT 200h has an unimpressive infotainment system. It comes with an optional remote touch controller, which receives much criticism for being much too distractive. In some scenarios, the driver's attention might be completely warded off from the road to make use of the unfriendly remote controller.

The infotainment system is backed by a 6-speaker audio system, which is a relief. Moreover, USB and Bluetooth connectivity are available. Satellite radio is also there to tune in to a wide variety of radio frequencies. However, there is no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto integration available. Some of the other features include:

  • Lexus Enform App Suite
  • Siri Eyes Free
  • Navigation System
  • Satellite radio

How much cargo capacity does the 2017 Lexus CT 200h offer?

One feat, in which the Lexus CT 200h falls flat is cargo capacity. While all its competitors offer over 20 cubic feet of cargo volume, the ride settles for a mere 14.3 cubic feet. Exterior
7.6/10

Upfront, the distinctive Lexus spindle grille of the CT 200h can easily be identified in a group of cars. LED headlamps with LED fog lamps and LED daytime running lights are standard. The rear of the CT 200h is sort of a stair-step theme.

The small rear window leaps to a horizontal section and then it goes vertical again before going horizontal again at the bumper cover. Overall, this is an attractive design although there have been few controversies regarding the same. The overall length of the CT 200h measures 171.3 which is around 7 inches less than the Prius and hence, the less interior room.

It is able to accelerate to 60 MPH in 7.9 seconds, best among its class rivals. Pricing options for the ride start from $24,120. This is about $7k less than the opening bid for the Lexus CT 200h.

Meanwhile, the CT 200h offers an impressive fuel economy than the C Max. Downers for the C Max include its curb weight of 3640 pounds. It makes it the bulkiest ride in the competition and it offers a poor fuel economy. However, the C Max’s interior is much spacious than the CT 200h.

Lexus CT 200h vs Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid

Unlike its competitors that feature a CVT automatic transmission mode, the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid features a 6-speed automatic transmission. This car comes with an initial price tag of $22,200 and is the cheapest in this competition.

The Ioniq makes slightly better power than the CT 200h and hence, its acceleration is relatively good. Due to its light curb weight, it boasts an excellent braking performance and fuel economy.

Lexus CT 200h vs Toyota Prius

The Toyota Prius has 121 horses of power and 105 pound-feet of torque at its disposal, both of which are the lowest in the league. Pricing options for the ride start from $23,475 which is almost 8 grand cheaper than the CT 200h.

Final Verdict

The 2017 Lexus CT 200h is a reliable hybrid that also qualifies for the entry-level luxury car segment. Though it lags behind other class rivals in terms of performance, the ride sure has some great luxury features at its disposal. All in all, the Lexus is fun to drive and less expensive than many other rides in the segment.

Having a long list of standard features is also a selling point for the CT 200h. However, having an outdated and irritating infotainment system is a downer. The Audi A3 and the Mercedes-Benz CLA outshine the car in terms of luxury as well as performance. However, the many customization options available with Lexus CT 200h is indeed a bonus.
