About 2017 Mazda CX-5

4.1

Overall Rating

Mazda CX-5 has been a regular performer for the Mazda company on the sales front for a number of years now. Introduced in the year 2013, the compact crossover SUV is a step ahead of its competitors only by a hair and manages to be a smart option amongst a pool of very capable SUVs.

The Mazda CX-5 has been famed for its exterior design and driving dynamics. It has an undeniable road presence that makes it look bulky and beefy and is one of its unique selling points. The Mazda's likability also lies in its finely tuned chassis and sublime suspension that bestows upon it a nimble yet athletic driving experience.

Priced at $24,350 for its base variant, the 2017 Mazda CX-5 in the latest avatar vaunts a refreshed fascia and an improved interior design, which puts it on top of its game. While its sporty engine and intuitive systems make it a viable option, the CX-5 does suffer from its internalized flaws. In its segment, it competes head-on with the likes of the Chevrolet Equinox, Volkswagen Tiguan, and Honda CR-V.

The availability of 4 trim levels alongside an optional all-wheel-drive system, allows Mazda to cater to all classes of buyers. Our pick amongst the lineup is the Touring trim which will be suited to most consumers, who want their SUV to be high on tech and comfort without being too heavy on pocket. It offers great comfort as well as amazing performance, which makes it versatile for all kinds of short city drives and long journeys.

Engine and Performance
9.1/10

The Mazda CX-5 has been always famed for its very sporty 2.5L Naturally Aspirated motor. The 4 cylinder Motor ranks among the top half of this comparison in terms of power and torque generated. For driving enthusiasts, however, Mazda has for the very first time debuted its 2.5L Turbocharged motor that does duty on the CX-9 into the 2017 CX-5. This motor is available only on the Grand Touring Reserve and the Signature trims and belts out 250hp and 310lbs-ft of torque.

Transmission duties are handled by Mazda's SKYACTIV -Drive16-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift and Sport Mode. The manual shift mode allows for the drivers to take control of the transmission when they feel they want to take control of things. The Sport mode quickens up the gear shifts and changes gear only when the engine nears or reaches its red line to maximize performance.

In terms of power and output, the Volkswagen Tiguan is the most powerful SUV in the segment. While all vehicles are equipped with an inline-4 unit, the transmission unit is different for each vehicle. The CR-V is the most distinct in its setup and is a continuously variable transmission unit.

Acceleration

The Mazda CX-5's 2.5L Inline 4 motor does a decent job when it comes to doing 0-60 sprints in 8.7 seconds. Its timings suggest that the Inline-4 naturally aspirated motor is let down by the heft of the CX-5. However, once on the move, the CX-5 easily picks up the pace to touch highway speeds. However, quick overtakes might take a while for the engine.

On the upside though, we feel that the new 2.5L Turbocharged motor will better the timings demonstrated by the Naturally Aspirated counterpart of the Mazda and rank among the top half of this comparison. The Chevrolet Equinox gets the turbocharged inline-4 motor, which offers better performance than the CX-5 and completes a 0-60mph sprint in 7.2 seconds. However, the Equinox runs out of steam in the higher rev bands, which makes it feel dull in the midrange.

Ride and Handling

The Handling of the Mazda MX-5 stands out against its rivals and ranks as the best in class. The chassis is one of the best in these comparisons as there is minimal body roll while taking corners or doing high speeds. Features like the G-Vectoring Control (GVC) changes motor torque depending upon the circumstance, like it can decrease motor torque indistinctly while entering turns.

This moves the load on the front and hence improves the overall grip. In terms of the ride, don't let the Premium looks of the Mazda fool you. The Mazda offers a great ride experience that doesn't disappoint you while driving on good roads or tackling the unpaved/bad condition ones.

Braking

Talking about the braking of the CX-5, the brakes offer good byte and feedback and don't feel soft in feel. Engineers have worked hard in calibrating the brakes well so that they can match the dynamism of the SUV. In the CX-5 you get all-around disc brakes that offer adequate stopping power. The SUV also gets a host of electronics such as a 4-channel ABS system, EBD, and brake assist as standard.

The 60-0 tests, however, suggest that the Mazda takes the highest distance to come to a halt. While this is not bad, but we do feel that had the CX-5 got less amount of weight attached to its body, the performance could have been better. The stopping distance of Honda CR-V is way ahead of Mazda here.

Fuel Economy
7.6/10

In terms of consumption, the 2017 Mazda CX-5 delivers good numbers despite its big weight courtesy of its efficient Skyactiv Technology in the 2.5L motor. The CX-5's mileage ranks among the best in our comparison today and is only beaten by the ultra frugal Nissan Rogue. The crossover provides a mileage of 25 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway, and 28 mpg combined. Even its tank has a considerable capacity of 14.8-gallons and when combined with its mileage allows the SUV to cover a comparable range in a single fuel refill. The naturally aspirated motor, however, consumes fuel quite a lot while on idle, which makes it less practical than its competitors.

In the segment, the Chevrolet Equinox and Honda CR-V manage similar efficiency as the 2017 Mazda CX-5. The Volkswagen Tiguan is the least efficient vehicle in the segment and manages a combined efficiency of 25 MPG. However, its fuel tank of 15.3-gallons is the largest in the segment and allows it to cover a competitive range.

Interior
8.0/10

The Mazda CX-5 can seat 5 travelers, and there is no option of a 7 seater configuration on any of the trims. The front windows are big and offer a good view of what's outside. The armrests are all-around padded and are at equivalent stature bearing a happy driving position. The CX-5 Touring gets a 6-way control driver's seat with manual lumbar support that adds to the driving comfort as well.

While the texture inside in base trim looks extraordinary, the CX-5 Touring trim’s leather-rich interiors exude a richer feel. The seats are well padded with thick cushioning and an armrest in between the front seats. The ergonomics, especially the ingress and egress into the cabin, isn't much of an issue due to the wide-opening doors. The CX-5 comes loaded with a host of features inside.

However, the 30.9 cu-ft. of space is good in terms of compact SUV standards and will accommodate most of your luggage with ease.

Exterior
9.9/10

The 2017 Mazda CX-5 has always been one of the top picks for people who wanted a stylish compact SUV to be driven in. Some sharp character lines are running across the body of the SUV, which exudes flair. The characteristic Mazda grille with the signature Mazda headlamps adds to the external appeal of the SUV and enhances its charm on onlookers.

The 2017 Mazda CX-5 ranks amongst the shortest SUVs in its segment. This gives the Mazda an advantage in parking in tight spaces or crowded areas or moving through tight traffic. The ground clearance of 7.5 inches gives the CX-5 enough space to easily crawl over the biggest of speed bumps or wade through small brooks easily.

Mazda CX-5 vs Honda CR-V

There is no denying the fact that the Honda CR-V is one of the best SUVs in the segment. It flaunts an easy-to-understand infotainment system and best-in-class storage space. The CR-V additionally has a rich lodge that offers two lines of seating and has enough space to oblige grown-ups. The Mazda, however, is a more enthusiastic performer bundled with a chassis that can take that. The Mazda also offers a better off-road riding experience and better sound insulation inside the cabin.

Mazda CX-5 vs Chevrolet Equinox

The Mazda CX-5 is one of the sportiest SUVs in the segment. The Mazda offers one of the best 2nd-row seating arrangements in the class as well. When it comes to the off-road ability, both the SUVs are nearly matched and have potent 4WD systems. The Chevy Equinox, however, offers similar performance at a lower price and also edges out the Mazda in terms of MPG in the city.

Mazda CX-5 vs Volkswagen Tiguan

The Volkswagen Tiguan has to be one of the best-built SUVs in the segment. The car has been solidly put together and exudes presence in flesh. It also has a potent AWD system in the form of the 4Motion technology on offer. The Mazda CX-5 offers a better day-to-day driving experience and has a more sporty character attached to it.

Final Verdict

The 2017 Mazda CX-5 manages to make a strong claim to the throne of the best compact crossover SUV. The trailblazer that started it all isn't shy of being a little rough off the tarmac and does a commendable job mildly off-roading. The design now looks fresh, all thanks to the 2017 changes, and the ever so eager and responsive engine is just like the cherry on top of this top-notch vehicle. One of the rare import brands that are doing well in the American market, Mazda certainly knows what they are doing.
