2017 Mclaren 570GT Review

Pros

  • Practical
  • Amazing ride dynamics
  • Streamline looks
  • Comfortable on the road.

Cons

  • Not throaty enough
  • Irritating MMI

Most supercars give preference to performance over luxury and some are even out and out road scorchers with complete disregard for creature comforts.

Overview

Most supercars give preference to performance over luxury while others are out and out road scorchers with complete disregard for creature comforts. But, the British car manufacturer McLaren has introduced a car which is not only menacingly fast but also soothingly comfortable, and it's called the 2017McLaren 570GT. Unlike its more track-oriented cousin, the 570s, the 570GT has a softer suspension setup to make the car more comfortable on the road. The steering ratio has also been altered to make the car ease into corners rather than darting into them.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

There is also enhanced storage in the form of a hatch. The hatch opens from the passenger side of the vehicle allowing access to the so-called touring deck. It is big enough for a small overnight bag and is fully insulated and leather-lined, ensuring contents aren't cooked by the mid-mounted engine. The McLaren 570GT promises to be a fine blend between a racecar and a luxury car.

We recommend

Since there is only a single model in the lineup. It is the only one we can recommend. It is priced at $198,950 and includes features like full LED lighting, adaptive suspension and leather upholstery to name a few. The coupe also comes with an option of Bowers and Wilkins 12-speaker sound system, which we won’t recommend.

Engine and Performance
9.1/10

The 2017 McLaren 570GT is in the recent bandwagon of cars that have embraced turbocharged low displacement engines as it features a 3.8L twin-turbo V8. The turbocharger helps boost the torque figure to a whopping 443 lb-ft while producing 562 hp. The engine is mated to a 7-speed automatic gearbox producing accurate and precise gear changes.

The 570GT is the most expensive car in the segment at almost $200,000. However, the most powerful car in the segment is theAcura NSX coupe, which undercuts the McLaren by almost $50,000. The least expensive offering on the table is by Mercedes with its AMG GT S offering for $131,200.

Acceleration

Acceleration is where supercars showcase their racing mettle. The McLaren 570GT accelerates like a rocket the moment you press the pedal to the metal. Off the line performance on the McLaren is something unparalleled by even more expensive sports cars. With a 0-60 mph timing of 2.9 seconds, the 570GT is the fastest in the segment, and only 1/10 of a second ahead of the Acura NSX.Mercedes-Benz GT S and Audi R8 take 3.2 seconds and 3.5 seconds, respectively to complete the same sprint

While the McLaren 570GT is blazingly fast, the Acura NSX Coupe does not also let any loose ends. It comes second with a difference of 0.1 secs from the McLaren 570GT, which is the crown taker. The top-speed is the segment where all the competition gives a shoulder to shoulder fight, but still, the McLaren emerges victorious for the highest top speed in the segment.

Ride and Handling

The McLaren 570 GT makes a complete fun drive package. The response from the throttle is sharp, giving an instant acceleration with immense power. The power is limitless and gives enough push to cover 0-60mph in just under 2.9 secs. As said, this machine is impressive to drive and is sharp around corners as you would expect from a McLaren. The present is the electro-hydro steering system which feels connected to the road, through the front tires offers plenty of response and communication.

Braking

The McLaren 570GT features a 14.6-inch rotor in the front and a 13.8-inch rotor at the rear. The braking efficiency is not as good as the 570S with the ceramic brakes, but it's certainly not something you will find yourself complaining about. The McLaren 570GT with a segment’s lightest curb weight of 3,269 lbs is naturally the segment leader with the least stopping distance of 95 feet from 60 mph. Following it closely is the AMG GT S at 100 feet.

The McLaren can be said to be the lightest car in the segment with a curb weight of just 3,296 lbs. It is indeed the lowest in the segment gaining an advantage in the braking performance. And it's just it when all the competition cars run for the braking performance test the McLaren gets to win because of its immense stopping power which makes the car come to a standstill in just 95 ft. The maximum distance is taken by both Audi and Acura of 103 feet.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

Fuel Economy is of little concern when one is out to buy a car that costs as much as a house. The McLaren 570 GT can return a paltry fuel economy of 19 mpg combined, which is barely acceptable even from a supercar. The leader in the segment with the most fuel-efficient engine is the Acura NSX with a mileage of 21 mpg combined.

In comparison, the Acura NSX is surprisingly the most fuel-efficient of the lot. Though it is a sports coupe, it has fuel economy figures of performance sedans. Speaking of tank capacity, theAudi R8 ranks first for the highest tank capacity of 21.9 gallons. When it comes to the combined range, Audi stands ahead with 372 miles, credit goes to its gigantic fuel tank for the segment.

Interior
6.0/10

Although the space stats for the McLaren 570GT are not available, you can expect the car to feature uber comfortable bucket seats made of carbon fiber and draped in expensive feel-good materials. With the available stats, the Acura NSX is the most spacious car in the segment. All the cars on the table come with a seating capacity of 2, which is a standard for the segment.

While the data for interior space that includes headroom and legroom are unavailable, we could not say as to which is better than the other in terms of space management. Though looking at the available data gives a clear idea that Acura manages to provide a better front row space to its consumer in comparison to Audi R8 in the segment. Some interior features on the McLaren 570GT include-

  • Carbon fiber seats
  • Leather upholstery
  • 7-inch screen
  • New-age digital round rev counter

Infotainment

The 2017 McLaren 570 GT features a 7-inch infotainment screen mounted in the center of the dash. The screen appears and operates just like modern-day tablets. However, the overall MMI configuration is tricky to use and almost gimmicky in nature. This area definitely requires some amount of refinement to match the overall level of refinement on the car. Some of the infotainment features consist of:

  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Premium Sound System
  • Satellite Radio
  • Smart Device Integration
  • Wi-fi hotspot
  • Auxiliary Audio Input
  • MP3 Player

Cargo Volume

Being a GT, the 570GT features especially crafted storage areas to complement the nature of the car. The special segment is able to fit 12 cu-ft of cargo. Not only is it able to fit a couple of small duffle bags efficiently, but it is also well insulated from the mid-mounted engine to avoid excessive heating of the area.

The 570 GT leads the segment in terms of cargo space while being followed in 2nd place by the Mercedes-Benz GT S Coupe at 10.1 cu-ft of space. Sports cars are not very generous in offering cargo space, and it is evident from all the cars in the segment. Acura stands last with a cargo space of 4.4 cubic feet.

Exterior
7.0/10

The 2017 McLaren, with its dropping roofline and glass back, is awesome to look at. The car features some of the most well-balanced exteriors that follow British elegance with an overall graceful look from the outside. It is also one of the longest cars in the segment at 178.4 inches. The McLaren 570GT is the lightest car in the segment at 3,296 lbs. The 2nd in line is the Audi R8, which is almost 400 pounds heavier than the segment leader.

  • Panoramic roof
  • Dihedral doors
  • Multi-spoke alloy wheels
  • Dual Exhaust

Safety
8.0/10

Although none of the major crash-test agencies have tested the McLaren 570GT, being a $200,000 sports car, it is almost fully made of carbon fiber. Hence, the structural integrity of the car is as good as any sports car if not better. There are ample amounts of safety features as well to ensure the well being of the passengers. Some of the major safety features are-

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) And Roll Stability Control (RSC)
  • Dual Stage Driver And Passenger Door-Mounted Side Airbags
  • Outboard Front Lap And Shoulder Safety Belts -inc: Pretensioners
  • Back-Up Camera
  • ABS And Driveline Traction Control

McLaren 570GT vs Mercedes-Benz GT S Coupe

The Mercedes-Benz GT S Coupe is another car that offers thrills with exhilarating performance. While the McLaren is more of an elegant and gentleman-ish grand tourer, the Merc follows a more barbarous approach. The car is endlessly long and features a giant grille upfront. Although the McLaren 570GT is a more powerful and sleeker-looking vehicle, one cannot rule out that the Merc too is brilliant at what it does while being much cheaper than the McLaren.

McLaren 570GT vs Audi R8

The Audi R8 is the flagship sports car by the German auto giant. In the age of turbocharged engines, the R8 features a naturally aspirated V8. The power delivery is seamless throughout the power band. The car is also extremely visually appealing but it falls just behind the new age look of the 570 GT. When it comes to interiors, the quality is unmatched with clutter-free spaces that allow you to focus on the driving pleasures of the vehicle. All in all, the 570 GT is a much finer track tool than the R8 but the R8 offers a unique experience of a naturally aspirated motor that a turbo car can never offer.

McLaren 570GT vs Acura NSX

The Acura NSX is a $150,000 sports car by Honda. It features a hybrid powertrain that works flawlessly and is probably one of the better ones in the hybrid segment. The car follows the legacy of the legendary NSX that wooed away buyers in the early 2000s. There is no denying that the Acura NSX is a fine track tool but it falls short of the preciseness of the 570GT even after the latter is tuned more conservatively. It might be hard for folks to wrap their heads around a $150,000 Honda which is bound to hurt is an overall appeal. In all honesty, the McLaren 570GT is just the better one amongst the two.

Final Verdict

Even after sporting a GT logo, the McLaren does amazingly well as a race car. The interiors are not top of the line good, but even then, they're finely crafted to do justice to the $200,000 price tag. The driving dynamics of the car are just a marvelous feat of engineering that even the more intense and focused track cars would find hard to triumph. All in all, if you can afford the heavy price tag, this is the car to buy in the segment.
