About 2017 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

2.7

Overall Rating

The G550 SUV is one of the 4 trims of the Mercedes G-Class. The G-Class starts at $123,000 and the G550 SUV is the base variant of the G-Class. Even though this is the base variant, it still comes packed with a lot of features to compensate for its huge price tag. With roots in the military, this SUV was brought to life in 1979 for the first time for the civilians.

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is one of the poshest and most capable SUVs of all time. The G-Class comes at an expensive price point but offers an amazing powertrain and technologies onboard. In 2017, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class comes with subtle changes that make it carry over its pride from the previous model year.

Boxy and braggy is what this G thing has going for it, add 19-inch wheels to the mix and we have a retro-progressive renegade that defies time and remains immortal even after 40 years. Sporting a 4L Bi-turbo V8 and three locking differentials the G550 is one for the history books.

An all-around vehicle that manages to stay to its roots and up the ante at the same time the G 550 is a great vehicle that is here to stay. With added luxury, the G550 is more capable and luxurious than its key rivals in the segment.

Engine and Performance
6.9/10

The G550 SUV is powered by a 4.0 L Bi-Turbo V8 engine and the power is transferred to the wheels using a 7-speed automatic gearbox. The engine produces a maximum power of 416 HP and a maximum torque of 450 lb.-ft.

It is not the most refined engine among its competitors but still, many people love the performance of the engine. It is one of the few very cars that use 3 locking differentials.

The rivals also have a similar power output but it is the Range Rover that tops it all with a peak power output of 550 HP. The Land Rover Range Rover is powered by a 5.0 L Supercharged V8 that is mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

Next comes the Lincoln Navigator Black Label with a power output of 450 HP, which is powered by a 3.5L twin-turbo V6 engine mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Toyota Land Cruiser is the least powerful SUV although it sports a massive 5.7L V8 engine.

2017 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Acceleration

The G550 SUV with the 4.0 L BiTurbo V8 hits the 0-60 mph mark in just 5.8 seconds. Though this is impressive for a car that weighs nearly 6000 lbs., it does not feel composed at higher speeds. The old platform on which the car was built has a different type of driving dynamics compared to the modern SUV's.

2017 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Ride and Handling

The G550 is a comfortable SUV. It features 3 locking differentials, which allows you to handle any terrain nature throws at the G550 SUV. The car sits on a high platform and hence has a higher center of gravity.

There is a fair amount of body roll while going through turns and corners. Though the car hits higher speeds easily, you feel the car shouldn't be driven at these speeds. The car isn't very stable and is not very confidence-inspiring at higher speeds.

2017 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Towing Capacity

When fully equipped, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz G550 can tow up to 7700lbs. However, the towing capacity is not on par with the rivals in the segment. However, the engine doesn't feel strained even when towing at the top of the capacity. However, the truck-like rivals offer better-towing capabilities, especially at this price point.

Exterior
7.0/10

The G-wagon is characterized by its boxy styling and body on frame construction. The boxy design of the G550 though old never fails to impress. There aren't many changes on the exterior of the SUV.

The basic design of the G550 SUV remains the same. There is a lot of right-angled edge look rather than the smooth and curved design of the other SUVs.

Mercedes-Benz G550 vs Toyota Land Cruiser

The Toyota Land Cruiser is more of a practical SUV. It has a seating capacity of 8, has the largest boot space, and has the best brakes, offers a sufficient amount of space and power. However, it is not made to perform well as the G550.

The G550 has a lot of features and performs well. It is one of those few cars that come with 3 locking differential, which lets you take on almost all terrain which you face. The G550 is more of a luxury off-road vehicle rather than being a practical SUV.

Mercedes-Benz G550 vs Lincoln Navigator Black Label

The Lincoln Navigator Black Label has a seating capacity of seven. However, it has a boot that is smaller than the G550. The Navigator has better fuel efficiency due to the smaller V6 engine. The new Lincoln Navigator is also more of a practical SUV.

It has better fuel economy, more seating capacity, and is the longest SUV. The G550 is a five-seater and is made to perform better off roads, unlike the Navigator that is a practical SUV.

Mercedes-Benz G550 vs Land Rover Range Rover

Both the G550 and the Land Rover Range Rover are five seaters. In terms of performance on-road and off-road, it is the Land Rover that beats the Mercedes. The Range Rover has a larger supercharged V8 engine that produces more power output and is quicker than the G550.

The Ranger Rover has all kinds of advanced technologies that help it tackle any terrain you throw at it. Moreover, the Range Rover offers a plush luxury cabin, better handling off-road and on-road. But it is much more expensive than the G550.

Final Verdict

The Box on wheels configured car does well on vintage, nostalgia-inducing looks, and the three locking differentials are still one of the things that make the Mercedes-Benz G-Class stand. But with only a few things going for it this car feels like an antiquated machine that is going on fond memories of yesteryear. With outdated tech and more wind noise than someone would care to bear this Grandpa is finally showing its age.
