About 2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris

3.6

Overall Rating

In the world of front wheel drives the Metris is an oddball with its front wheel drive. The funky design is different than what you expect from a Merc, far from what the well established Sprinter.

The Mercedes is known for its high performing engine and plush interior quality. But did you know Mercedes was the builder of smaller worker vans too? You might have noticed the bigger, more intimidating Sprinter, but this car is its casual little brother, working all in to conquer the minivan country.

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris Minivan is priced at $28,950, a little higher than the minivan class. The van is backed with a potent 2.0L I4 engine and mated to 7-speed automatic transmission. This powerplant churns out 208 hp of power and 158 pound-feet of torque. This makes it the most powerful Van in this segment, and thus offers much better-towing capabilities than its rivals.

If you are buying the Metris just from the business's perspective, then buy the Worker Cargo. Don't bother with spending more for features you don't require by opting for the higher trim. The Worker Cargo van comes with tilt-adjustable steering, air conditioning, 6-way manual driver seat adjustment, and controls on the steering wheel. Thus the Worker Cargo has all the features that is required to carry cargo.

2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris Review

Pros

  • Larger Cargo area
  • Better rowing capacity
  • More power
  • Easy to maneuver

Cons

  • More expensive than its rivals

In the world of front wheel drives the Metris is an oddball with its front wheel drive. The funky design is different than what you expect from a Merc, far from what the well established Sprinter.

Overview

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

Starting at a sticker price of $25,995, the Mercedes-Benz Metris cargo minivan is categorized in 2 trims. While the worker cargo trim is priced on the lower side, the normal cargo trim is the usual full-fledged minivan. Backed with all the necessary comfort and safety features, the Cargo minivan is equipped with more features than Worker Cargo. This minivan propels just on the necessities and stays true to its basic nature and accommodates ample cargo.

Thus the Worker Cargo has all the features that is required to carry cargo.

Engine and Performance
6.4/10

To state the obvious, you won't get the Mercedes razor shape handling or the upmarket interior in this one. Still, this hauler is equipped with a potent 2.0 L 4-cylinder engine paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission.

The engine pumps out 208 hp of power and 258-pound-feet of torque. The upshifts and downshifts are smooth, and in the city, the engine sound is competitively silent than the other vans.

Despite sharing a similar engine, the Mercedes-Benz Metris minivan is the best van in competition today. Its high powered engine serves the purpose better than any other in the minivan territory. Second to the Metris is the Ram Promaster City Tradesman Cargo with its competitive 178 horsepower. The Ford Transit Connect Cargo is the 3rd runner-up with its 169 horsepower, making the Nissan NV200 the slowpoke in this lot.

How quick is the 0-60 mph acceleration of the 2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris Cargo Van?

Acceleration is the last thing you talk about in a minivan. You might not have any expectations but the Metris's energetic engine says otherwise. The car zips off from a standstill to 60 mph in 7.9 seconds, very impressive for a minivan. However, this potent engine doesn't control the 8.0 tons/year of CO2 it releases in the atmosphere.

The lack of information might impair a healthy comparison, only the 2017 Nissan NV 200 S was the only one willing to stand up to the Metris. It tried but failed miserably, the Metris's 7.9-second acceleration overwhelmed the Nissan's 10-second performance. Still, it's 7.1 ton/year of CO2 emission is better than the Metris's.

How is the Handling and Braking Performance of the 2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris Cargo Van?

The Metris provides the best driving experience than any other minivan in this comparison. The steering is responsive to the driver input and fun to toss around in the city, but provides great stability when moving on the highway. Being a heighted vehicle, it surely will have body roll, but the Metris always feels under control.

The Metris braking features an 11.8-inch front and 11 inch rear discs, which is better than most of its competition and a benchmark for the minivans. It might be heavier than the usual minivan norms, but courtesy of the larger brakes, it halts in an impressive 119 ft distance. In the city, the pedal feel is firm and easy to modulate.

Considering the larger brake discs, the Metris is bound to deliver a niche braking. The Nissan, on the other hand, is one of the lightest minivans in the market but performs poorly in the panic brake testing. The car took 137 feet to halt from a speed of 60 mph. Other vans in the lot come with smaller discs and heavier weight, so their performance is expected to be lower than the Metris and even the Nissan NV.

How much is the Towing Capacity of the 2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris Cargo Van?

A cargo van is required to tow loads along with hauling the cargo inside the van. While most of the manufacturers are working towards doing that, Mercedes has cracked the code and achieved what is the best towing capacity in the segment. It isn't just the capacious cargo space that comes with a higher price, this van can tow up to 5,000 pounds which is impressive for the class.

The competition falls short here, with the Ram ProMaster City and Ford Transit Connect only capable of pulling off a similar 2,000 pound. The trailering capacity is a bit of a surprise for the class. The towing capacity of Nissan is not available for making a comparison.

Fuel Economy
6.6/10

A utility vehicle without mileage isn't that useful, although the Metris shares deep roots in the efficiency territory. Its 21 mpg of city mileage makes it economical, and the 24 mpg highway mileage makes it a well-rounded economical car. To sum up, the Metris’ 22 mpg of combined mileage matched the industry demands, but sadly the competition propelled better numbers.

Great power comes at the expense of efficiency, with that being said, the Matis's 4-cylinder engine might churn out more power but delivers less on efficiency. The Nissan NV 200 S is the most efficient car with its 25 mpg of combined mileage, followed by the Ram ProMaster at 24 mpg and the Ford transit at 23 mpg combined mileage, making the Metris the least fuel-efficient car in the lot.

Interior
7.0/10

Being a utility van, interior space is all the Metris has to offer, however, you won't get a lush vibe from this cabin. No touches of soft leather or fancy accessories, just the basic necessities for a minivan. Being the cargo version, there is a room of just the driver and his wingman, and the rest qualifies as cargo space, so there are no worries for space.

As for the functionality, a lot of features and dials are directed from Mercedes mutual inventory, so can easily rely on them. However, the lack of windows hampers the visibility of this van. You get a sufficient 39.4 inches of headroom and 62.2 inches of shoulder room space, but the 35.8 inches of legroom space can be troublesome for tall drivers.

The Mercedes might feature a decent cabin, but in terms of spacing, it delivers just enough space to get in or get out, nothing more. The competitors went the extra mile and featured more space and comfort. Where the Ford Transit Cargo and Ram ProMaster City delivers a generous headroom and legroom space, the Metris and Nissan NV 200 are a little truncated.

From a utility standpoint, the Metris is the best car in the lot. Its 186 cu.ft of cargo space is not just the best but features the most usable of all. The second to Metris is the Ram ProMaster with its 131.7 cu.ft of cargo volume. The parallel Nissan NV comes a little short on cargo space of 122.7 cu.ft, though the smallest cargo space comes with Ford Transit measuring at 103.9 cu.ft.

Exterior
6.4/10

As mentioned before, you will not find the Mercedes sleek looks in this Metris. In fact, considering the Sprinter, this minivan looks pale and doesn't portray a similar confidence. It is more groovy than being daunting like any ginormous van. The only thing making it Merc is the Tri-Star badge on the front grill.

The Mercedes-Benz Metris stretches long and wide right from the front bumper, features 202.4 inches of length, 75.9 inches of width, and 75.2 inches of height. However, the longer wheelbase secures stability on highway cursing. Considering the class, its 4.3-inch ground clearance is much lesser than its rivals.

The 202.2 inches of length makes the Metris the most sizable van in the lot. Still, being the biggest comes with its downsides. The longer wheelbase impairs city maneuverability, sharp turning is the kryptonite of this van. Also, the shorter ground clearance might create a scuffle on bumpy roads.

Safety
9.0/10

However, this minivan is backed with a number of safety features, which adds the safety angle to this versatile minivan. Standard features like airbags, stability control, etc are part of this van. Other standard safety features will include things like-

  • 4-Wheel ABS

Mercedes Metris vs Nissan NV 200 S Minivan

The concept of Euro vans spread like wildfire, soon all the big players started putting money on these lavish vans. Nissan picked up quickly, however, the Merc launched its first van 2 years after, but to compensate for its absence, it raised the bar for everyone in the class including the Nissan's NV 200 S.

The Mercedes Metris might be a little expensive but its features, power, and utility explains the higher price. The bottom line is if you are willing to invest in more power and utility, the Mercedes-Benz Metris is your ideal van.

Mercedes Metris vs Ram ProMaster City Tradesman Cargo

The Ram ProMaster City has always been a money-savvy minivan for the class. Priced right, this minivan has always been a complete package for the class, but some things are bound to change. The Mercedes-Benz Metris delivers more power and features extra cargo volume.

So practically, it serves its purpose, but the Ram Promaster features a better fuel economy. Overall, it's a tough choice where one side sits in power and practicality and the other side possesses better mileage and economical price, so choose wisely.

Mercedes Metris vs Ford Transit Connect Cargo XL

Ford was amongst the very first brands to invest in minivans. The Transit Connect today is a testament to Ford's innovation and progress. The Mercedes played its game to launch an advanced minivan like no other, which gave us the Metris.

The Metris is better at storing things, is more powerful, and delivers optimum cabin space. Also, the Merc's features are more easy to use, just price is the point of concern for a budget shopper.

Final Verdict

In the world of front-wheel drives, the Metris is an oddball with its rear-wheel drive. The funky design is different from what you expect from a Merc, far from what the well established Sprinter offers. The Metris features the largest cargo volume with a spice of extra power and efficiency. The bottom line is, the Mercedes is the sweet minivan featuring a bigger cabin and greater power, better than anyone in the class.
