Overall Rating
The 2017 MINI Hardtop Hatchback is a four-seater sports hatchback that can envy many. And quite deservedly, the Mini pips the Fiat and to an extent. However, its fight is with the Ford Focus. Both these cars go head to head and come out equal in almost all the parameters, with the engine capacity, fuel economy and the pick up being a few, when taken as a whole.
The small car market is the world's biggest car selling market, and there are various reasons for the same. These cars are easy on the pocket, are fuel-efficient as well, also they can be parked in the tiniest of spaces. The 2017 Mini Hardtop is one of them but it gives something extra i.e., Luxury! This is the very reason this car is here to stay and compete with the much more established Fiat 500L pop, the Ford Focus SE Hatchback, and the Honda Civic Hatchback.
The Mini Hardtop base variant, the Hardtop 4 door Cooper, is the one you should go for because it has all the basic features one requires from this car. Also, there is a huge price difference between the two cars. For us, the base variant of the hatch is enough for you to enjoy the Mini experience.

The 4 door Hatchback can be called a less sporty version of the 2-door variant. Mini has taken the customization game to a whole different level with this version, making the ownership experience of this car that much more personal. The Mini Hardtop offers just two trims currently. It is a rear-wheel-drive with the 1.5-liter Twin Turbo engine, which is situated at the middle of the car and provides a 6-speed dual-clutch Manual transmission as standard. Along with that, the 4-doored hatch does get a Start/Stop button, an infotainment system, and a set of daylight running halogen headlamps as standard.

Powered by a 1.5L Twin Turbo inline 3-cylinder engine, this hatch produces 134 hp of power and 162 lb-ft of torque. It gets rear-wheel drive with a 6-speed Manual transmission as standard.
The starting of this car can be a bit jarring but gives the best results while running on higher-grade gasoline. The engine too is peppy enough to provide the thrust. However, at higher RPMs, it just tends to respond slowly.

The Mini and the Honda Civic offer a 1.5-liter engine, which provides higher values of power and torque. The Fiat has a similar 1.4-liter engine which again produces decent figures. The surprise here is the Ford Focus, which despite having a 2.0-liter engine, produces figures less than the others in a few departments.
The Mini has always been known for its fast acceleration, and this is something where the 2017 Hardtop does not disappoint. The hatchback manages to make 0-60 mph in about 7.7 sec, which is just a shade faster than the Fiat Pop. The quarter-mile timings of the hatch are not available for comparison.

As already mentioned, the Mini is not far ahead of the Fiat in terms of pickup. In comparison, the best acceleration figure is shown by Honda Civic hatchback as it takes 7.5 seconds to reach 0-60 mph while taking 15.5 seconds to complete a quarter-mile. Following Honda Civic in 0-60mph is the Ford Focus with 7.6 seconds.
The Mini is a lightweight car with a low center of gravity and brilliantly combines all the ingredients of great ride quality. The city ride is great, and parking in tight spots isn't a problem for this car, while steering is smooth and fun to drive in the city and during traffic jams. Having said all this, the bigger tires on this Mini Cooper has made the turning a little harsh.
The 2017 Mini Hardtop Hatchback has the braking to match its acceleration. That the car is the lightest amongst its peers at 3,254 lbs of weight, which is an advantage as it takes just about 116 ft to stop in the 60-0 mph breakdown. The hatchback comes with a decent set of brakes to give the driver a solid control over the hatchback.

The quickest to stop amongst the rivals is the Honda Civic at 115 feet, the same can’t be said about the Mini though. The Fiat stops in 119 feet and the Focus stops right after at 120. The braking performance shown here will definitely result in better performance during emergency situations as well.
In terms of economy, the Hardtop 4-door gives a mileage of 28 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway. With a combined mpg of 32, the Mini does generate excellent figures. But, when compared to that of the competition, it's really great and comes second to the V-Tec powered Honda alone.

The Fiat's thirsty engine, giving a combined mpg of 25, takes it to the bottom of the pile, while the other three of Mini, Ford, and Honda are just a mile or two apart. The thirsty engine of the Fiat 500 L is similarly thirsty for more throttle as well. It can be easily noticed that the MPG figures offered by the Cooper is definitely greater than the class average.
This Hardtop is a sports hatchback which accommodates 4 people comfortably. It provides heated and cooled seating as well.
The passenger rear seats are also electrically powered. It also houses the driver-seat memory system settings, which shifts the seats as per the preference of the driver beforehand.

The seats are electronically powered, providing ample support to the driver. They are power-adjustable and heated and are made of premium synthetic leather upholstery. Add to that leather-wrapped steering wheel which is sporty and can be adjusted as per the preference of the driver. Some interior features are:
The Mini infotainment system is easy on the eye and works impeccably. It is easy to use and understand, and contains a Harman Kardon Sound system, again something unheard of in a Hatchback of this size. Every detail about the buttons and the elements used makes an exclusive statement of luxury. Key infotainment features include-
This is something where the Mini engineers need to work on, big time. The trunk is the smallest and that too by a big margin. It stands almost 10 cubic feet smaller than the next competitor. In terms of practicality though, the trunk can easily hold a few duffle bags among others. It has a wide opening with a flat surface, which is good for inserting and removing those heavy bags. This trunk seems good enough for a shopping spree, but not big enough for containing the luggage of 4 adults traveling long-distance.

No rival comes near the Mini in this parameter, as they all soar way above. The Mini has a trunk volume of 13.1 cubic feet, with the Fiat Pop coming a distant third with a space of 22.4 cubic feet, closely followed by the Ford with 23.8 cubic feet of space. The Civic is the best here with a trunk capacity of 25.7 cubic feet.
Designed with its racy design and sporty style, it is one of the best looking hatchbacks available in the market. Add to that, the Mini is the lightest amongst its rivals.
One look at the car, and you will want to do risky close calls and traffic filtering all day long, as the car looks nimble and planted.

All the four cars are pretty much comparable in the dimensions parameters, as all of them boast of a similar-sized cabin from the inside. The Mini does boast a ground clearance worth mentioning, and it stands at the top of the pile under this parameter with a height of just 5.7 inches above the ground. All the others are around 4.7 inches, whereas the Civic stands at 5.1 inches above the ground. Some of the exterior features include:
With the Mini, despite the cars having a smaller build, you can be assured that they have bigger results when it comes to safety ratings. Despite the popular belief of smaller cars being unsafe options, the Mini completely contradicts that belief, it has scored well in NHTSA as well. Major safety features available with the hatchback include-
The Fiat is of no match to the Mini. Despite having a smaller advantage in the engine, it generates almost equal torque and power. The Mini has a better pickup, and the braking is better too.
The fuel economy is way better as well. The Fiat though has slightly bigger cabin space and the passenger volume is just a little bigger. However, the Mini is the clear winner here.
The fight between the Mini Hardtop 4-Door Cooper and the Ford Focus goes right down to the wire. Both generate almost equal figures in engine output and fuel economy. The cargo capacity is where the Focus is a clear winner, and rightly so, as it is very near to the best in class.
However, the dimensions, space inside, and add to that the significant difference in price among the two, and Ford is the deserving winner here.
Again, like the Fiat 500L, the Civic, despite having a similar engine, manages to make quite a lot more power and torque than the Mini. It even manages to match the Mini for a few other parameters as well. However, its fuel-friendly engine and space inside in the trunk as well as the dimensions give it a big plus, making it the deserving winner.
The better brand value and a more direct approach to luxury along with performance do give this Mini a much more premium outlook.
The 2017 Mini Hardtop Hatchback is a sports hatchback that can envy many. And quite deservingly, the Mini pops the Fiat to an extent. However, its fight is with the Ford Focus. Both these cars go head to head and come out equal in almost all the parameters, with the engine capacity, fuel economy, and the pickup difference being a few when taken as a whole. However, while the Mini has the best fuel economy and ground clearance, the Ford has more space in the cabin and a bigger trunk. So, if someone is looking for a stylish four-seater with a lot of flamboyance about it, the Mini Hardtop 4 Door Hatchback is the car, while a more sensible and value for money pick would be the Ford Focus.
