Pricing and Features
9.0/10

There are a total of 4 trims on offer, and starting at a very affordable $18,390 for the Base S. Since the base S trim is the least expensive of the parcel, it doesn't have a lot of features. The ones which come standard are the standard full length boxed step outline, rearview monitor, and front oriented back flip-up seats. The SV4 Cylinder just raises the bar by the incorporation of the king cab. The 16" compounds which are given, just give the ideal shoe measure for this trim, while it is additionally costlier with around $4.5k more than the base trim.

The SV6 here is priced at $25,220. This trim just changes the game with the inclusion of a 4.0 liter 24-Valve V6 engine. It also gets a 5-speed automatic transmission. The top of the line 'Desert Runner' includes Bilstein shocks for giving it the best off-road feel possible along with white-faced gauges, which gives the interior a new fresh feel. The Desert Runner cloth set trim is also a unique inclusion in the top-end variant that is the 'Desert Runner'.

We Recommend :

Engine and Performance
7.3/10

By being the cheapest in the lot, with a beginning price of $18,390, it's the best point Nissan can score. While its rivals like the Toyota Tacoma and the GMC Canyon are about $3,000 to about $7,000 more costly. The Nissan gets a 2.5-liter DOHC 16-valve 4-chamber motor, which is the motor alternative offered by the large portion of the adversaries aside from the Toyota Tacoma which accompanies a 2.7L I4 DOHC 16-valve 4-barrel motor.

As far as the transmission is concerned, the Nissan is accompanied by a 5-speed manual, while the Toyota comes with a 6-speed automatic. While the GMC and Chevy simply offer a 6-speed manual. Discussing the 'BHP' which may concern the vast majority of the motoring devotee's, the Nissan just gets a 152hp engine, while the Toyota is close with its 159hp power.

GMC and Chevy are in a different league with their engines providing 200hp of power. The performance figures don't change much in terms of torque, where the Nissan churns out a 171lb-ft, the Toyota again gets close at about 180lb-ft and the best of the lot are the GMC and Chevrolet which give up to 191 lb-ft torque.

Acceleration

The most important question from any motoring enthusiast is, "How fast is it?", and seems, Nissan has taken this question too seriously, where it crosses the 60MPH mark in about 7.5 seconds, which is far better in terms of its competitors which take about 8.1 seconds for the Chevy, and 9.8 seconds and 9 seconds for the Toyota and GMC, respectively. But, what's important to be noticed is the better performance despite weaker engine configurations. But just being quick doesn't mean you are fast, as the Nissan takes about 16.5 seconds to complete a quarter-mile while clocking in 90MPH.

The Chevy is a bit faster which takes about 16.2 seconds clocking at 84 MPH. The fastest of the lot is the Toyota which takes about 14.7 seconds while clocking at about 91MPH, and the slowest is the GMC at just about 17.1 seconds. Toyota is the one that comes with a 2.7L engine. While the rest, including the Nissan, provides a 2.5L Engine. The Emission in tons per year at about 15K mi/year is also not a respectable number for the Nissan, which emits about 8.4 tons/year, the Toyota does the same. The cleanest ones are the GMC and the Chevy.

Handling

Handling is the Achilles heel for the Frontier, as there isn’t much you can do about it. The car feels confident to drive in on the open roads, but the corners and getting out of tight parking spots can feel like quite a chore as it really needs you to put in the effort. But from an industrial perspective, this should be fine, as it can easily get the job done, at an affordable price.

Braking

If you want to go faster, you need to have better brakes, and after taking this into consideration, it gets a better set of brakes of about 11.30(in), with superior quality brake pads. Its competitors offer a better combination of 12.2 and 12.8 (in) brakes for the Chevy and the GMC offers 12.2 and 12.7(in) brakes.

Fuel Economy
5.4/10

One of the most important factors while buying a car is fuel economy. Keep in mind that pickup trucks are not the epitomes of fuel efficiency. Having better fuel efficiency definitely eases the process of living with your vehicle. Nissan has a considerably good number for its MPG at highway, which comes around at about 23MPG, and the worst of the MPG numbers was recorded while in the city, which is 19MPG. The combined averages of both the city and highway turn out to be about 21MPG.

Interior
6.9/10

One thing won’t be a problem in a pickup is the space for the passengers inside. While making room for 4 people, Nissan has indeed done an excellent job. The interior is spacious, and the seats provide ample support to all the passengers as well. The sub-par quality of materials used does hinder the luxurious feel as the vehicle could have otherwise offered. Standard features in the Frontier include Bluetooth, a USB port, Siri Eyes Free, a four-speaker audio system, a 5-inch display screen, and a rearview camera.

Exterior
6.7/10

The 2017 Nissan Frontier is the shortest in the lot in terms of the length at just about 205(in). The Chevy, GMC, and Toyota come at about 212(in) of length. This just makes the Nissan look small when compared to its rivals, which are all around 74(in) in width when the Nissan is just 72(in) wide. The same is the case where its rivals are tall at about 70.4(in) where Nissan is just about 68.7 (in).

On the outside also, the Nissan doesn't make many cosmetic changes, while still sticking to halogen headlamps and 16" wheels. Major exterior features include-

  • Rear Defrost
  • Tires - Front All-Season
  • Tires - Rear All-Season
  • Full Size Spare Tire
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Safety
9.1/10

The safety features are not the strongest suit of the Nissan Frontier for 2017. However it has received good ratings from the NHTSA as well as the IIHS. It doesn’t have a lot of advanced safety features to its name, especially in the base trims. Few key safety features which are present in the pickup by Nissan are-

  • Nissan Advanced Airbag System with dual-stage supplemental front airbags with seat belt and occupant-classification sensors
  • Driver and front-passenger seat-mounted side-impact supplemental airbags
  • Roof-mounted curtain supplemental airbags for side-impact with rollover sensor
  • Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) with Traction Control System
  • Active Brake Limited Slip (ABLS)
  • 3-point ALR/ELR passenger seat belt (ELR for the driver)
  • Front-seat Active Head Restraints
  • Front seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters
  • LATCH system (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren)
  • Zone Body construction with front and rear crumple zones
  • Hood buckling creases and energy-absorbing steering column
  • Pipe-style steel side-door guard beams
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Competition
6.0/10

Nissan Frontier vs Chevrolet Colorado

When the 5th most selling truck is put up with a truck from the big three, the Nissan falters under the weight put upon it. The interiors feel dated and the overall engine output is far lesser than its competition. The Colorado has some serious figures under the belt, which overpowers the Frontier on all fronts except the cargo capacity.

Nissan Frontier vs Toyota Tacoma

The Tacoma is the truck that always remains at the base of the correlations, and there is a valid justification for it as well. The Toyota pickup truck misses the mark on key angles and scarcely figures out how to stay aware of the class standard. Tormented with unwavering quality issues as a brand, one may be doubtful of purchasing this workhorse.

Nissan Frontier vs GMC Canyon

The Canyon is the General Motors twin of Colorado and is relatively indistinguishable to it except for the payload capacity and towing limit. The payload is sub-par compared to the Colorado and much progressively sub-par when looked at the more capable Nissan Frontier. GMC Canyon is a commendable adversary that just edges past the Nissan.

Final Verdict

Nissan's ace is its towing capacity and a moderate value point. The cash squeezing is certainly felt on the inside, and the engine power and performance is not something to attract you in comparison to the peers in the segment. On the off chance that you can spare and spend somewhat more, there are certainly better alternatives that are accessible.
